The newest one...6.3.10 or whatever it is..

Doesn't tell us too much since
a) it's 3.6.10 and
b) there are thousands of quite many 3.6.10 builds, because an "official" one hasn't yet been released.

That may be enough. Some older 3.6.10 builds are no longer compatible with the server, and thus won't connect no matter what one tries, ad this could sound rather like that problem. Please try the build I'm linking and tell us if it connects, as even if it doesn't then at least we can narrow down the possible problems: http://www.freespacefaq.com/Misc-Downloads/Builds/Scoring-Changes.7z

In the launcher it only let me select .exe files and the file you sent for me to download is some kind of Z7 file or something..

That's because you have to use 7-Zip (http://www.7-Zip.org/[/url) to open it.

And the one in my signature is newer.

If you are using a new one just try renaming the multi.cfg and fs2_open.cfg files in your data directory.  It should work then.

Whatever you want so you know what they are just in case.  I would have said just delete them but renaming is a better just in case.  I renamed mine .cfs

FUBAR, he didn't even extract it.

You don't need to extract it if you are using a recent build from after the problem was fixed.  That config file allows the older versions to work.

He didn't extract the FreeSpace Open build. He was trying to select StandaloneFixes-1.7z in the launcher.
