Neat. Is the beam damage trail on that Shivan corvette glowing?

It certainly is glowing!

guess what i've been doing

The good Christian should beware of mathematicians, and all those who make empty prophecies. The danger already exists that the mathematicians have made a covenant with the devil to darken the spirit and to confine man in the bonds of Hell.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
So I've been playing around with Unreal 4. Imported some assets, started to get some gameplay logic going, and so on and so forth.

But by god is this ever pretty:

I want one.

Seriously, I have UE4 on my computer but no coding experience, and I WANT ONE.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Actually, with this HDR build, how would a recreation of the UE4 screenshot look?

Re: A celebration of Freespace
If I were to guess, not as close as I'd like it to be. Unreal Engine 4 uses the GGX lighting model which is a bit more intensive to calculate. The lighting model in the PBR builds use Blinn-Phong which is still physically-based but not as expensive to calculate. The Unreal Engine also prefilters their environment maps better. I'm just doing simple downsampling to get glossy reflections while Unreal prefilters based off the specular lobe shape.

When I actually get physically-based rendering working, I'll release an official test build with instructions on how to use the new PBR workflow. Maybe when we get to that point, I'll work on getting a better lighting model in and doing accurate prefiltering of the environment map MIPs.

Now we just need to dial it up to 11 and add 50 more lens flares and we'll have Abrams Trek!

11 seems a bit low for Abrams...

I was curious how Diaspora looked in the PBR build.

Sorry about the film grain. :P

Re: A celebration of Freespace
For some reason the embedded imgur picutures no longer show up on my end since two weeks or so ago.

When I put the URL into the address bar they show just fine, but embedded in a forum post here on the HLP I don't even see that there's a link unless I try to quote the post in question.

Does anyone have an idea what the cause might be? ...well other than Java Script, Adblocker and ScriptBlocker, since I already checked all those and they aren't blocking anything.

Here's the build The E posted on IRC: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7wqthznf02ns3qp/fs2_open_3_7_1_shadows_SSE2.7z?dl=0

Remember that it's experimental and there are no guarantees that it'll work properly.

I know it breaks things, but that build on NuWoD makes ships look wtfbbq awesome.

Just use the Ship Lab and check out the Celestial, for example.

The code can be found at https://github.com/SamuelCho/Freespace-Open-Swifty/tree/pabst_bleu_ribbon; if you don't want to/aren't capable of compiling it yourself (and don't want the somewhat outdated build ngld linked above), I just compiled a fresh AVX and SSE2 build.

schrödinbug (noun) - a bug that manifests itself in running software after a programmer notices that the code should never have worked in the first place.

<Aesaar> literary criticism is vladimir putin

<MageKing17> "There's probably a reason the code is the way it is" is a very dangerous line of thought. :P
<MageKing17> Because the "reason" often turns out to be "nobody noticed it was wrong".
(the very next day)
<MageKing17> this ****ing code did it to me again
<MageKing17> "That doesn't really make sense to me, but I'll assume it was being done for a reason."
<MageKing17> **** ME
<MageKing17> THE REASON IS PEOPLE ARE STUPID
<MageKing17> ESPECIALLY ME

<MageKing17> God damn, I do not understand how this is breaking.
<MageKing17> Everything points to "this should work fine", and yet it's clearly not working.
<MjnMixael> 2 hours later... "God damn, how did this ever work at all?!"
(...)
<MageKing17> so
<MageKing17> more than two hours
<MageKing17> but once again we have reached the inevitable conclusion
<MageKing17> How did this code ever work in the first place!?

<@The_E> Welcome to OpenGL, where standards compliance is optional, and error reporting inconsistent

<MageKing17> It was all working perfectly until I actually tried it on an actual mission.

<IronWorks> I am useful for FSO stuff again. This is a red-letter day!
* z64555 erases "Thursday" and rewrites it in red ink

<MageKing17> TIL the entire homing code is held up by shoestrings and duct tape, basically.
