Still, my best friend recommended that I get the full series of both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, and I will admit that I am curious about the two series. I know that the latter is a Distant Sequel of the former and I'm about to get them both on BluRay. So I guess I'll have to make my peace with anime after all.

It's not really anime in terms of narrative, but more like a dark cartoon with serious [and actually very good] storyline and interesting worldbuilding. Visual style is pretty much chinese cartoons, yeah. Give it a try. Both TLA and TLoK are awesome, but they are completely different things.
