Title: First Contact... Huh?
Post by: TigerVX on April 07, 2009, 12:52:27 am
Well, first off, awesome campaign, I'm loving it and I've only just started! Took me more then a couple tries to get past Forced Entry... But that's not whats troubling me. The mission First Contact doesn't seem to work very well for me. I warp in, check the two signals, get a bunch of dialogue, and I get to them talking about what the fighters are made of then it just stops.

At first I thought, well okay, I'll just warp out because it said my engines are recharged. Well, I got a no briefing screen and it said I failed the mission. Alright, I'll just shoot the two buggers down and warp out, is that what it wants? Nope, same thing. So now I really don't know what else I'm suppose to do in this mission. Nothing seems to happen after they start talking about what the fighters are made of.

Spoiler:
Stay put.  If you get too close to the unknowns, you fail the mission

Alright, I kept my distance this time and it still stops at the same spot. "They're made of Crystal" ect. ect. is where it ends, right after my engines recharge. After that I just sit around, looking at the little buggers patrolling around at a good 2000 m distance away, and nothing happens. Is this how the rest of the mission is suppose to go, or is something broken?

When the mission starts, just cut your engines.  You won't need to move at all during the mission.  Wait for the dialogue to end and the fighters to jump out.  Pretty soon you should get a directive or something to jump out.  At that point, do so.

I didn't touch the mission after setting my burners to zero, waited for ten minutes, and nothing happened.

I'm beginning to think that my mission is broken or something!

Did you target both of the unknowns?

Hrm, I made sure to target both unknowns, still the same result, nothing happens after the engines recharge and they talk about what they fighters are made of

What build and what version of BP are you using?

I used the Freespace Open installer to get it, so whatever version came with that. Is there a newer one? I'm also using the 3.6.10 exe, not the 3.6.9 one.

I bet you're using the 3.6.9 version. Try this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,61406.0.html).

nothing happened.

Did you try to jump out?

Alright, I downloaded that, its nice to have the new version, and I get a failed briefing now. The briefing tells me to not get close enough to the new fighters for them to detect me...

Did you try to jump out?

But the thing is, I can't start any new dialogue until I actually can target the unknowns, and once I target the unknowns they always turn around and make a B line for me, meaning they've detected me. But I can't jump out until I start the dialogue sequence when I detect the unknowns, otherwise the dialogue wont go, my engines wont recharge, and nothing will happen. But again, to get the dialogue started, I have to detect the enemy fighters with my targeter, which also lets them see me, which fails the mission for me.

Quite a paradox...

:wtf: If they head right toward you when you target them, either something is wrong or you are too close to you.  When the mission starts, just press backspace to kill your engines, and target them using T from exactly where you are.  They should ignore you and run their waypoints, and then jump out.  If you do all that and there's still a problem, then it might be a bug but MAKE SURE NOT TO MOVE AT ALL DURING THE MISSION

Oh my... Targeting unknowns, well this is new *facepalm*

Guess I'm kind a noob then, sorry! I was still in the whole Freespace 2 unknown mindset. In all of Freespace 2, and most user campaigns, unknowns aren't targetable. And after that, the usual course of action is to fly at the bastards until they become friendly or hostile. So when I saw two purple blips on my radar, I just assumed they were the untargetable kind. Sorry, all this trouble over a little oversight by me, thanks for the help  :shaking:

Purple blip == not friendly and not hostile; unknown IFF status

Flashing blip == untargetable.

Catch is, FS2 used both.  You generally got FLASHING, PURPLE blips.

Well, the first one I recall was flashing and red...and then the Sathani were flashing and red...

Were there any flashing purples?

Actually I don't remember seeing those ever. Just red. Maybe a few green. And the point was that if they flash, they can't be targeted except with possibly that funny "target ships attacking my currently selected friendly target" function. In this missions they did not flash -> they could be targeted.

No, that was the target target's target key. Which may be any target.

I think purple may have been used once or twice in FS1, but I can't remember very well. Anyway, theIFF "Unknown" isn't used very much in the official campaigns.
