Title: REQUEST: Voice acting!
Post by: Tolwyn on January 02, 2007, 12:54:22 pm
With the Prologue campaign finished, we're need more voices to round out our voice talent. Previous voice work for another mod is preferred, but not required. Candidates should be serious and be able to sound like someone in their 20s. Openings are for miscellaneous ships and roles, with a strong emphasis on Confed fighter pilots.

We're also auditioning for a few major roles in the campaign, candidates must sound like an older person in their 30s to 50s

To become a candidate for this process, reply to this thread to officially let us know and then PM or email to [email protected] for more information.

Then try your luck on these 26 lines. Voice recording should be done in 44 khz mono. I shouldn't say this, but you guys need your own microphone. Please make sure to eliminate breathing into microphone sounds.

You are free to say your interpretation of the theme as long as it doesn't deviate too far.

1) "All fighters are destroyed, area is secure"
2) "Enemy fighters have arrived"
3) "I'm attacking your target"
4) "We're the backup and we've arrived to save your ass"
5) "Bravo Wing here, we've just arrived"
6) "There's a fighter on your six!"
7) "I'm dying!"
8) "Charlie Wing here, we've just arrived"
9) "I'm getting the hell out of here"
10) "I'm disabling your target" (going for engines)
11) "I'm disarming your target" (going for turrets)
12) "I'm breaking formation to engage enemy"
13) "Delta Wing here, we've just arrived"
14) "Echo Wing has arrived"
15) "I'm taking damage"
16) "I'm ignoring your target"
17) "I'm not following your order"
18) "I can't pick up your target on sensors"
19) "You just fired on me, man"
20) "Main player has been killed!"
21) "Main player just did something cool!"
22) "I'm out of missiles!"
23) "My fighter is heavily damaged"
24) "Main player is straying away from objective"
25) "Main player is traitor, off with his head!"
26) "I'm following your order"

The guys with the best "comm voices" gets the fighter pilot roles, but there is a strong chance that the people not selected for this role will be delegated for other roles as well, they are as equally important.

Please keep in mind: these are only guidelines. The lines are provided to give you an idea of what a character might say in a given situation. To give flavor to the voice acting each character should develop personalized versions of these lines. The critical thing is that the INTENT of the message remains the same. This is your opportunity to make the part you are playing your own. Be creative and have fun!

#Messages Examples
For each of these message types (ALL CLEAR, ARRIVAL, etc.) you will need to record one or more personalized lines. The lines given are only suggestions.

What the hell are you doing?
That weapon is for the enemy, pal!
You got a problem with your IFF? Whose side are you on, pilot?

;; PLAYER KILLED (previously "player died")...........................................

Just a clarification: Do you guys need female voices as well or is this an all-macho show? ;)

44kHz mono, I'm assuming that's a wav file? 16 bit?

And speak with some inflection people! No offense, but Baws sounds like he's an easy chair.

Actually, the orginal Freespace didn't use the most inspired sounding voice talent either, but you have to blame the producer for that.

And here's a mic to look at (http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1810). You can find crappy headset mics that cost more than this one. Get a stand and a pop filter and you're there.

I know many more techniques...

Ah, what the hell. Even if I'm only a wee 16, everyone mistakes me for my 60-some dad on the phone. Might as well, y'know? =/

I apologize in advance if it sucks so bad, you attempt to pull an Oedipus on your ears.

*goes off to wonder exactly how to make himself sound older*

...oh, just curious. I noticed that WCS seemed rather PG, but some of your lines here seem rather PG-13. I'm assuming that we're not to drop the F-bomb at all (before you get a bad impression of me, no, I don't swear incessantly; I'm one of the few online teens who knows how to swear tactfully), but how lenient are you on this? Basic mid-level PG-13, I'm guessing?

I'll be more than happy to audition, just as soon as I get over this cold I picked up today. :p

I haven't tried before, but in case a give it a shot...

I'm from Greece and most likely I'll have a bit of an accent (no, not the usual greek to english one :P), can I still try?

edit: And another question, do we have to say these lines exactly as written, or can we give it some more colour?

You know, like in Wing Commander that each pilot had his own way of saying things. :)

Yes.

Btw, you could compress your files as well. (MP3, 128 kbs). And please put everything into one archive.

22) "I'm out of missiles!"

One question about that line: Wouldn't it be better if the pilots said something along the lines of "I'm Winchester missiles"?

you are free to alter lines as long as they do not deviate far :)

Actually Wing Commander 3 and 4 were certificate 15 in the UK, which is above a 12 rating. And so would be considered an R rated movie had it actually been one in the states.  So I dont think it matters much. Though I dont think you should say "fuck", as there were only I think 1 instance in Wing Commander where I heard anyone say that.  :)

Greetings.
I'd be pleased to help you this way. I'm a french amateur comedian who's been playing on scenes for 5 years now, and I've made another candidature for the BSG Beyond The Red Line mod (don't know if they've chosen me, though). Even if I'm not native english speaker, I think my accent isn't too bad...but be prepare to tiny original pronounciations. Anyway, let me know if it'd be ok.

Indeed, the international flavor adds to the futuristic feeling, the premise being that by that point we will have all learned to "just get along".

Hey, maybe we can get one of the characters to call you "Frenchie".

hey there, I'm new (today) and just wanted to start off by saying I have been waiting for a remake of Wing Commander since i played the originals, and having played the prologue today I must say I am extremely excited for the work you guys are doing. I own (or have owned) every WC title since the original (even the WC3 Collectors edition "movie reel" one  :)). but enough about that sorry everyone, as you can tell im a little excited.

just a question.
when we all send in audio clips, say some are seen as possible major roles in the game, how will we be contacted if you are interested? because im sure all of us are no doubt.

probably a dumb question now that i read it over myself but oh well..

anyways. keep it up  :D

victoryashes they will have to do that.

Speaking of which, why is it that so far in the future radio still has a 6 kHz bandwidth and sounds like AM radio today?

Never mind, it's for the same reason that space supports those fantastic explosion sounds.

thanks huggy,

i noticed your post above about that Samson mic and you said you had a few other tricks, care to PM them to me? I can't quite squeeze out that much right now and I don't think Samson will accept my Best Buy gift certificate lol.

anyways, i have GoldWave and am probably picking up a decent headset tomorrow. Any info on making my recording quality better would be appreciated I think I have a few pretty good ideas.
cheers

Hmm, that's one cheap mic, considering you don't need a preamp or a USB converter. You should try to suck it up, but I know how it is.

I'll compose some more hints for public consumption tomorrow rather than PM you (I don't mind PM'ing you but why not share eh?). I'm working on my install guide right now, which is likely to benefit more people.

Stay tuned to this space.

OK, here's a hint: print your lines. Practice them. Mark the paper where you want to emphasize, inflect up and down, etc. You can invent your own markup technique.

If you don't have headphones, close one ear so you can better hear your inflection.

OK, that's more than I promised, much more later. I'll be listening to you after all, I don't want you to suck.  :p

haha well put
i would definately love to grab that samson, being a musician i could probably use it for more than just voice over applications  ;)
but for that same reason (being a musician) i need as much cash as i can get. but if you are listening to the samples and you find you like them, perhaps i will plunge into the investment.
im confident asking fans of the game was definately the right choice, hah i wish i could pick'em
happy hunting

I'm not involved in the process, I'm just an interested observer who happens to have done some dialogue editing for pay...I don't know who the engineer will be.

What I mean is, I'll be listening to you after you make it into the game, so don't put me to sleep!

No, we will take care for any disturbing sounds or the comm beep. Just record in normal speech :)

Once more advice, be sure to use your natural voice and not try to fake one. If you will receive a role, you might have to record quite a few lines (depending on the role) and then it can become difficult for you to always use the same voice.

If you are talented in voice faking, then of course go ahead. As long as you are able to use always the same it's o.k for us. :)

ill try not to.
I've listened to a LOT of dialogue... some good and lots bad. I hope the developers are critical about the voice overs because, and no offence to the prologue actors, portions of it were kind of cheesey. Just an opinion of course though.
ill try not to dissapoint

The voices were all great. Only Major Baws could use a little more "acting" in his voice, like the voiceover of Sandman, or Ninja and that third instructor. The voice itself is good.

But all in all it is certainly at commercial level. I've seen much much worse in commercial games and not much better stuff. Most of the voices are movie quality I'd say, both in sound and acting.

Downloaded the prologue and was knocked out.  As for the voice acting, I'd like like to take a stab at it.  And I talked my wife into it as well.

Actually, I'm already done with all 26... :)

i didn't even realize this was a NEW thread.  Silly me.  Well I'll be submitting lines in the next few days.  One question:
I've got a cheap logitech microphone from best buy.  Is that going to be high enough quality or should i try to get something better?  If anything i can submit with the current mic and then upgrade later.
BTW... i am in love with this mod.   Who was the voice of Ninja (the wisecracking wingman and not the fast-talking matter of fact one)?  His voice work I thought was exceptional.  I hope everyone selected is that caliber of an actor.  Great job Tolwyn and Starman and the whole team!

Yes Huggy i am a drummer.  Been playing for about 8 years now in rock, jazz, drum & bass, pop, and whatever.  You play as well?

I'll be sending in my recordings asap. While I've never done voice-acting, I have spent several years on stage in the Netherlands, and even done some TV work. So I hope they like what I do.

Although I'm told I don't sound Dutch so much as American. Ah well :P

I saw the link about WCS on www.gamestar.de and i am still enthused on the demo :). I've played WC3,4 and 5 and like them very well! Maybe my voice isn't very vital(?!) but i want to help making this tc to a dignified follower of the original. Are there other ways to help you? Creating wallpapers, cutting movie clips, making some webdesing or something like that?

In any case, i have send you a PM with a download link to my 24 examples. Don't wonder about my accent, i am from germany ;)

Hehe, sure thing Tolwyn.  Also wanted to say thanks now that I'm aboard the WCS Developer Team.

As for the voice scripts you have listed...I am curious...now are these 'auditions' to get a part in the game...or are these the actual files you'll use if you think they are good enough?

If they are ones you will use, I best make them as good as though they were being recorded as I was a hired voice actor.  I'll do this tommorow.  Tonight I am just too tuckered out.  Look out for my submissions tommorow

Hey all.

Just in case anyone is interested, almost any vox recording can benefit from a pop-filter.  I posted a brief guide on building one from common parts easily found around the house.

Hope it helps,

Heh, good one, I was going to mention that too.

Instead of the hoop, you can also stretch the stocking over a clothes hanger. You won't have as much space between the two layers, but it works.

Hi there, I was just wondering if auditions were still going on, as I've only just found out about this and am definitely interested.

I'm 27 and I live in London. I've not really got any voice acting experience as such, certainly not for mods, but I have done some Light opera work including several leading roles involving dialogue, so I thought I'd give it a try. If you are still requesting voice actors, I'll try to send some of my voice acting as soon as I can.

I'm so sorry that I completely forgot that I was going to resubmit a bunch of mine recorded at higher quality. Do you still want them?
I have prior voice acting experience doing a large portion of voice acting for "Combat Construction Mod" for Tribes2, (Unfortuneately our head dev joined the army just shortly before I had finished recording and editing so we never released the voice comms) and a few miscelaneous acting things as both a vocalist and actor in plays ect. Actually have an audition for a TV Show Pilot on Saturday. Anyways, you've already heard some of my work if you still want me to resubmit at a higher quality I would be more than happy to

Welcome!

But I don't understand what is the problem with the squadron name?  Cock fights are very common in the world.

Oh.. let me guess: You're not a native english speaker and you don't know that the word cock has more than one meaning?
In that case I suggest that you look in a dictionary for that.

What about "Raging Cocks Squadron" or "Bleeding Cocks Squadron" or something like that...

By the Way,I dont think that Cock is defined in a regular Dictionary...at least it isnt inside mine... :D

Cock = D.I.G.
Cock = Male Chicken

You can cock a Bow...you can cock your D.I.G... :D...and if you add a "adau"...its a Cockadau... ;7

I hope I did the right Translation...at least this is what my enhanced Dictionary told me...

Ohh and if WC Saga Team is in search for a "Kraut" Pilot or Someone like "Iceman" (yeah I know he died in WC 1)...that says Someone who only have to speak three Words a Letter...than im the Man for you... :pimp:

IIRC the name is a little gag because something with that name exists in our story writer's real life or something like that.

There are more then 40 Definitons for the Word Cock in German Language...

The most funny one was...Cock of the North...no its not Abe Lincoln...its a Bird... :D

Still need recordings? I don't really have any experience with this but all that matters I suppose is trying to pitch in. The files are in PCM format and 8 khz mono. If you don't mind me asking, how and to what should they be converted (since my attempts to do so thus far have resulted in corrupted files), and how would you like them submitted?

EDIT: on a less serious note I can put a slavic accent on lines or do decent Sean Connery impressions. :P

Title: Re: Voice acting: polish, german, russian
Post by: Acin on July 23, 2007, 11:13:14 am
I thought If one want to give WCS a less "American" face one could also try to introduce some real foreign "battle chatter". I mean in a possible future galactic conflict the training and the putting up of squadrons would be probably done on a national level. Therefore why not put up some battles with other squadrons, say from China, Russia, Poland, Italy, or Brazil, where the English speaking player would feel caught a bit off guard, but still fly having fellow humans around:-)
During the Battle of Britain in 1940, two polish squadrons 303 and 302 have excelled to become Royal Air Force's best squadrons. The pilots were veterans who managed to escape to UK following Hitler's Campain in Poland in1939. They used of course polish to communicate between eachother and English to communicate with the Air Command. I thought, why not pick up such plot? There could be some other Squadron flying off the TCS Warsaw, TCS Frankfurt or TCS Minsk(for example) co-engaging one's own targets?...

If you have played the german version of Starlancer you would get a feeling how that would sound. OK might be that the german version has it a bit overdone with the acent but sometimes it was totaly funny to listen to.
You argument would be true if confed didn't decided to set one language with the unification of earth....but we don't know that as far as I know.

Anyway its more disturbing to have to strong acens in a game.
Title: Re: REQUEST: Voice acting!
Post by: Acin on July 23, 2007, 07:41:39 pm
I'm glad you had something to laugh about :-) I can of course lessen the accents, but that is up to you. Just let me know. Nevertheless, On this occasion I'd like to congratulate you on the game. It is wonderfull! I think it hits the spot, however, is there a place where I can gets some hints on how to solve the missions? I'm stuck in one and I just can't go on. That is a bit frustrating. Is there a thread with "spoilers?".
I'll send Tolwyn one more batch  of voices without any accents and you people make the call :-)

I've had a lot of fun with the Prologue and would like to try out if there's any room left.  My 'normal' voice is pretty deep and may work for an older character.  I can also get by with some accents, though I expect that wouldn't be needed with the widely international attention this one is getting!

Regardless I'll give the try-out lines a go and spam your inbox Tolwyn :)

On a side note, I recently made a mission with a good bit of voice (in my sig) if you'd like to check the ogg files from it, but I've run heavy filters over them so they may not help much.  That and most lines were first attempts since I knew the filters would mask a number of imperfections.

I can lend my voice. My accent is polish [ Poles don't accent at all, or try to emulate brit. accent ], so if that sort of voice is needed, I'll put my voice in! [ It's a great hobby of mine ]

Speaking as someone IN their 30's, I'm not sure I like being called "older" LOL, but I;d like to give this a shot if you're still looking for folks.  I'll send an e-mail along to get all the details.  Thanks!

Well someone in their 30s is definately not old (I'm approaching them faster than I'd like to myself so...) but for a combat pilot even I with 28 would be a very old guy :P

Hi everybody :) I think I can give it a go. Russian/ukrainian accent is possible, even though people tend to tell me I have rather correct pronunciation. Besides, I've been a singer for 5 years or so by now, so voice usage is one of the things I can consider myself good at. Actually, I can simulate different ages as well. At least, that's something I can try to do outside my usual voice. Gonna send my samples as soon as spare time appears :)

I'd very much like to help out with this project.  I can do an American accent, English, Irish, and multiple others as requested.  I'd very much like to get my foot in the door on these projects!

Hi pilots,
Nice voice work guys
I would like to ask something and think that maybe another thread will be useless :
On the news i saw that german voice has been done and i'm wondering if some other foreign voices will be made.
Because i'm french and if it's needed i ll be glad to put some voice samples.

Keep up the good work

Actually no. Unless, of course, a larger group of people can take care of the translation and voice work.

How many voice actors are needed now and how high is the priority at the moment?

I'm wondering if I should participate in the cast...

I've actually started doing my first voice acting over at TBP, for Skullar's EA Civil War campaign. It's fun and frustrating at the same time, at least in part because English is NOT Skullar's first language, so I'm having to rework the lines of my NPC as I go. Even so, it's a blast. Once I'm done with that, maybe I can start doing some stuff for you Tolwyn.

Hello, I'm new the forums, but i've been lurking it for the longest time.

I've always been a fan of the WC series for almost as long as I can remember, and I've always had a lot fun with friend imitating video game voices and sound effects. So I'd thought I'll give my shot at this. As I would love to be part of this great game, loved what has been made so far.

As for my voice, I'm a 21 year old male. I almost talk like a radio show host IMO and the opinions of a lot of people (working in the public, people i never met before tell me this often.) As for previous experience, very little. I do video game announcing for local competitions, and I use to run a public speaking seminar and do a bit of acting in school, but as for true voice acting, nothing published,  yet.

As for personal contacts.
I live in EST time zone, but i work nights.

Did anybody bother to read the actual news update on the website instead of the CIC version? :)

Please do not get me wrong, I appreciate that you send me samples beforehand, but the actual casting will not take place till mid- / end of December.
Title: Re: REQUEST: Voice acting!
Post by: Alan Bolte on November 23, 2009, 02:52:47 am
I guess the news update is unclear? I didn't really know what you wanted based on just that newspost, so I let the CIC preface color my interpretation.

I'm still not entirely sure what you wanted. I guess you just wanted written lines or something?
Title: Re: REQUEST: Voice acting!
Post by: Tolwyn on November 23, 2009, 05:43:11 am
Honestly...

We would invite all of you who wish to write up lines that fit each of these categories. You can submit as many sets of these generic lines as you can.

Feel free to write variations on the theme and to be creative, so long as you do not stray so far from the theme that it becomes confusing.

I found the updates on HLP's website to be just as clear, if not clearer, as CIC.  However, that being said, I have already submitted my voice and am patiently waiting for news.  I spent 30yrs in Texas plus 3 yrs in New Mexico and about 8yrs in the New England/Upstate New York areas.  My accent is either not there or, when aggravated, its a thick Texan/southern drawl.

Funny part, it just came out during the recording as if I was still in the Hicksville of where I went to College  ;7
