Title: Diving
Post by: Stormkeeper on July 08, 2008, 11:24:31 am
Just curious. What happend the first time you had to dive, did you live or die. If you died, how many tries before you succeeded?

For me, I was drinking water. When I heard him scream, I freaked out, spat the water out, dropped the cup and got splatted.

Second time around, I was ready, I dived, and triggered the Shivan patrols.  :doubt:

Third time, I decided to pull up and ... well. You know.

Fourth time, I turned around and ran like hell... not fast enough.

Fifth time, I dived and survived!

And recently when I was re-playing the FS2 campaign, I kinda forgot about this mission and was getting a snack and came back to see "Stormkeeper has been killed by SJ Sathanas"...

The first time (on retail) I was mostly wtf since back then I was using a really dark monitor and couldn't actually see what was coming at me -> boom. On my second try, I revised the word "dive" in my mind and came to the conclusion that the proper direction would be "down" -> success.

Was playing co-op with someone, heard “dive" and was promptly hit with huge lag. Had a great little moment of panic. Made it out anyway, though.

Took me 4 times to survive this mission!  First time, it took a while to understand I had a 6km piece of metal coming towards me at 400m/s.  Too long as it became apparent I had become the fly splat on the Sathanas' windscreen.

The multiplayer version of this question would be ho many time have you had to restart the game because some noob got run over by the Sath?

There is another outcome.  Run over and survived.  Granted that doesn't happen too often or if it happens at all in single.

Occasionally I'll get swatted by the Sath, and will end up ridiculously far away with 1-5% health left.

I was used to playing more conventional flight sims at the time, with little inconveniences like gravity and solid ground, so given a choice of directions, my first instinct was to pull up.  I cleared the forward flak battery but my luck and burners both ran out about a split second thereafter.

I was too busy trying to turn down the speaker volume during Snipes' scream to actually manage to dive...

I dove. I follow my orders. I can live with being a pawn as long as the game makes sense. And it made quite a bit of sense to dive in that situation.

Wait, you can play this on co-op?

If you download the game via Turey's Installer, you can get a full-on four-person co-op version of the campaign. They can be played as single missions or as a multiplayer campaign.

Actually, we never had anyone run over due to lag in co-op. The brief host-still-joining lag, fortunately, kept everything -- including the Sathanas -- frozen.

I remember the firs time I played that mission...I was stretching when the mission started and most missions that not a problem but I remember rushing to grab the joystick again and angled the fighter down while hammering the afterburners.  I barely made it...it was quite the rush :)

I think the reason why I'm able to survive everytime is because I used VPVIEW32 and visited YouTube and Interplay before I actually got to that mission, so I knew what was coming.

Quote from: Singapore's Total Defence Slogan
Readiness is your only protection.

When I first heard Snipes scream, I thought he was telling some Shivans to die. :wtf:

If I didn't use VPVIEW32 and visit YouTube and Interplay, I think I would probably end up like BlackDove on my first attempt.

By the way, BlackDove, you said your screen name is inspired by Snipes. Is this the event that inspired you to choose this screen name?

Yup.  My first time, I saw the Sathy incoming and automatically pulled up, not processing Snipes' command until it was too late.  IIRC next time I couldn't dive correctly and died, so I tried pulling up and got left with like 1% hull, so I retried the mission.

Somthing happened in that mission where you take out Sath#1's beam turrets. I had just managed to take out the 4 beam turrets and the Flack cannons WITHOUT CHEATS when the bloody ship jumped out and threw me 6-7 km from the node with 30+% hull. Failed the mission because the Beleth survived. First time. Second time the rest of mission was self-playing.

And this was on medium difficulty.

Never happend to me in the Dive! dive! Dive! incident though. I usually do dive.

First time i pulled up and got smaked in the face by those flares at the back for my troubles
on a couple of occasions ive gone in random directions and survived

There's a Discovery Channel program called "I Shouldn't Be Alive"... :nervous:
Today's episode:

4 pilots enter hostile territory on a dangerous mission. Upon entering the system, they are greeted by a Juggernaught hurtling to them at high rate of speed. Snipes, the most experienced of them, immediately calls for them to dive.

Snipes: "DIVE, DIVE, DIVE! HIT YOUR BURNERS PILOTS!"

However, one of them, Alpha One, pulls up instead, forgetting that the Juggernaught flares out at the end. By the time he realises it, its too late. The Juggernaught hits his fighter at over 40ms,  sending him flying.  Incredibly, he's still alive, but just barely. Alpha One limps his fighter over to his wing, fighting to keep his systems alive. Unfortunately, he has no way of leaving the system until his jump drives reactivates ...

Because the objectives of the mission were top secret, we have no way of knowing what else transpired in the system. But incredibly, Alpha One returns home, bruised and battered, but still triumphant. We were unable to interview the famed Alpha One, but rumors circulating him range are numerous:

Jack Niven: "~+I. I'm telling you that's what he did. How else could he survive our exe-- Uh. The NTF ambush on him?"
Alpha 2: "He survived because he can live with being a pawn because the game makes sense to him!"
Fred: "He probably had ship-guardian."
Snipes: "What, do I look like Alpha One to you?"

However, the most popular, and heavily reinforced rumor, is this one, put forth by an unnamed source from within the GTVA:

Danmmoc: "No one can recoginze me, right? Since my name is spelled backwards? Okay.... You wanna know why he survived? Its simple.            Because. Simply because he's Alpha One. That makes you automatically immortal."

And there you have it. The numerous reasons why Alpha One survived. We may never really know ourselves, but I'm sure Alpha One is saying to himself, "I shouldn't be alive."

'Black Dove' is Snipes' codename in the encrypted message in the Command Briefing in 'As Lightning Fall'.

Not so much inspired, as much as "ripped off". I was a kid, Snipes was cool, I saw his alternate (one time only) callsign was Black Dove, and I took it. He was cool, I wanted to be cool, general childlike mentality.

Once I took it, I used it everywhere, and so that was that.

Many people did the same thing. Like Raa, before he was Raa here, he was "Snipes" on VolitionWatch. Everyone thought Snipes' character in the game and the voice actor was a bad mother****er and wanted to associate with him.

Though that's off topic. Answer relating to the topic is both "yes" and "no", the event was just one of the things that pushed me in the direction to use it, but not the defining moment.

tl;dr - boring ****, skip if you didn't read it

It's a method of storytelling, though, so get used to it. I think the James Bond movies tend to do things like this... :drevil:

Things like "Before you die, let me tell you my plan." or "This weapon is invincible, but it has one small weakness, and that is..."

Now where's that Evil Overlord list?
Title: Re: Diving

Well, it would have been a bit abrupt ending for FS2 if there would just have been a briefing saying "We know all about you! You stole the Sunder and framed loyal NTF members to be responsible for the destruction of it. Prepare to die. *zap*". Right?
Title: Re: Diving
Post by: Androgeos Exeunt on July 30, 2008, 05:54:28 am
Exactly. Which is why rules 6 to 9 of Peter's Evil Overlord List will always be violated:

6. I will not gloat over my enemies' predicament before killing them.

7. When I've captured my adversary and he says, "Look, before you kill me, will you at least tell me what this is all about?" I'll say, "No." and shoot him. No, on second thought I'll shoot him then say "No."

8. After I kidnap the beautiful princess, we will be married immediately in a quiet civil ceremony, not a lavish spectacle in three weeks' time during which the final phase of my plan will be carried out.

9. I will not include a self-destruct mechanism unless absolutely necessary. If it is necessary, it will not be a large red button labelled "Danger: Do Not Push". The big red button marked "Do Not Push" will instead trigger a spray of bullets on anyone stupid enough to disregard it. Similarly, the ON/OFF switch will not clearly be labelled as such.

Well, it would have been a bit abrupt ending for FS2 if there would just have been a briefing saying "We know all about you! You stole the Sunder and framed loyal NTF members to be responsible for the destruction of it. Prepare to die. *zap*". Right?
Well, GTVA Command seems to do that every so often in debriefings.
I hope you noticed that I used the word "briefing", referring to a silly scenario where the "briefing" (not "debriefing") of ...But Hate the Traitor would include the said execution, thus causing "sudden death" during the game, leaving the player with a high sense of wtf.

You mean the traitor/desertion debriefings?

I wonder who'd be stupid enough to run from a mission and run back to base to get hanged. Or become a traitor and return to base.

I don't think you get hanged for desertion, "Wilfully firing on Allied ships is a Capital Offence" but there's nothing mentioned about desertion being one AFAICR.

That's if you fly too far away from a certain point, I think.

If you go 600km away using SCP, you get self-destructed.

But I meant that when you return to base without authorisation.

Depends on the mod you play :nervous: you could get re-assigned, lose your homebase, and end up losing th war against the french. just get a ticking off.

Well, I hit my burners :( but died because I flew straight. I think I turned around everywhere the next time to see what was coming...

3rd time lucky I think. Just follow the AI.

Speaking of the AI...do they even use their afterburners?

Yeah. Sometimes, I have to purse my lips when I hear MSS's voice from a female pilot.

Hey, make him say "soif".

MSS makes a funny choking noise when it tries to pronounce "Soyuz" (INFR1). probably the same thing happens with "Soif".

I tried it out with my PC's Microsoft Sam, and it came out the same way.

"Soif" is pronounced as "swarf", and that isn't very difficult to pronounce properly. By rights, your voice should not go hoarse when you pronounce it, but when it comes to Microsoft Sam... :wtf:

Is the "soy" thing a glitch?
Since I know the "crotch" turning into "crow's nest" is probably intentional.

Maybe, but I'm not sure, because I don't like using Microsoft Sam. In fact, I prefer the Office Assistant over him.
