Original Post Below
-----------------------------------
Ok, for a variety of reasons, chief of which were bad decisions on my end coupled with crippling malfunctions, I'm declaring Wallbones (The fortress from this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83281.0) ill-fated thread) officially BONED. I haven't officially abandoned it in-game, but it's safe to assume that's the better ending.

So it turns out an evil desert that rains nauseating, mildly corrosive sludge isn't the best place to raise a family. Especially if you're a dwarf. Super-brief recap for anybody who doesn't want to read the story of Wallbones (yes, I'm judging you, but I am putting a synopsis here): Settle in evil desert. Hunker down underground to avoid sludge rain. Do ok for a while. Dig into cavern layer. Let in vicious cobra-like Forgotten Beast. Said Cobrabeast kills everybody. New migrants arrive on the surface just in time. Migrants form new fortress. New fortress does ok for a while, then falls into a tantrum spiral. I say "**** this".

This time, we're doing this MY way. Don't worry, you'll like my way.

First, let's roll up a new world. The previous world that held Wallbones didn't have a lot of great embark sites, plus I've always preferred embarking at sites with a volcano. (See? I told you my way rules!) Volcanoes in conjunction with other desirable traits aren't very common, so I delve into the Advanced Worldgen parameters to bump the minumum volcanoes from the default 15 to 100!

Just for the worldgen section, I'm switching back to classical ASCII, by the by.

A world with the rather radical variation of that many volcanoes is a little harder to generate, so I dialed the pre-history limit waaay back to only 400 years, and put a cap on concurrent active historical figures. A couple hours later (mostly because I'm EXTREMELY picky when it comes to "ideal" sites) we have an acceptable result: "The Mythical Realms". As before, I'm making the full exported worldmap available for the nutters who care about such a thing: POW (http://www.mediafire.com/view/85ke43a8e48kebj/world_map-region3-400-10081.bmp). (Mediafire link)

Some snooping around later, and here we are: one of a chain of volcanoes in a normal forested valley. Looks like we've got a good diversity of resources available right off the bat, a stream off on one side, and NICE, NORMAL SURROUNDINGS for a change.

Rifle through a bunch of party names until I run across this gem- The Untamed Machine we shall be!

And this new fort, this nascent bastion of dwarfiness and awesome, shall be known as Peakwind. Doubly fitting because our volcano actually has a fairly sharp and high elevation to it.

Fairly boring stuff here, just starting equipment and provisions. I'm doing the "forge gear on-site" trick again; it's cheaper than actually taking tools. The starting seven are all fairly ordinary stat-wise, I can get a little more intimate once I get around to processing all the named dwarf requests. I'll get to it once we're situated.

Oh lordy that ASCII.

Much better. I copied over the savedata folder into the graphical version's directory before I started the game.

So, rather than a more blow-by-blow approach I took in the previous LP, I'm going to focus more on highlights this time around. Like right now immediately after the first wave of migrants arrived.  The volcano's magma pipe is a bit to our south- don't worry about it just yet, I've got some big plans in mind.  Oh, also- the current version of Dwarf Fortress has this nifty feature where you can dynamically adjust the zoom level on the fly. You may have noticed I've been using that feature since the previous thread. Either way, I'll use the zoom feature mainly when I'm trying to screencap something big.

The basic layout of Peakwind's initial cavern is quite similar to Wallbones. Butcher's shop and refuse pile is to the west, farming with main storage and workshops is in the central area, combined living/sleeping area is to the south, and the trade depot and main entry hall are to the east. One big difference is the traps added to the main entrance hall. After the debacle of Wallbones, I'm going to be much more security-conscious with Peakwind. In addition to gratuitous trap use (yes, including an eventual Gravity Blender or the like) every adult dwarf will carry a weapon and ideally wear some minimal armor. AIN'T NOBODY ****IN' WITH PEAKWIND, YO.

I'd like to be a military axedwarf, still.

If you're not farming the reincarnation requests for dwarven volunteers, sign me up. I'll take any job, but if you need a suggestion, I'll go stone/metal worker or combat dwarf.

HLP DORFS NEVER DIE! (Unless it's by the droves, in which we line the caverns with our mouldering flesh)

Not an update (yet).

Just confirming that I do still have the dwarf incarnation requests from the previous thread noted. Here's where we're sitting right now:

PhantomHoover - Jeweller/Doctor
Polpolion - Miner, Cook, Military (retread)
SpardaSon - Axedwarf (retread)
Firespawn (Borin Balrogbait) - Hammerdwarf (retread)
Scourge - Stone/metalworker, Military (retread)
Hobbie - Mechanic
Kobrar - Herbalist, Animal Caretaker (retread)
deathfun - Nopref (retread)
dsockwell - ****cook (irc in-joke, don't worry about it)
DeeJay - Smith (retread)
TrashMan - Military (retread)
redsniper - Nopref (retread)
Dekker - Combat Engineer (retread)

It may be a while before I can get a suitable substrate for everybody, but I'm not the kind of guy that forgets. And also, if you're marked as a retread, expect to see your dwarf have some addition of -son or something to an "incremental" effect appended to your name.

Hey don't forget Gortef/Gortina. I'd be more than happy to be dorfed again without any specific preference. It worked just fine last time, right?

Go Peakwind!

I'm all for the illustrious bone smith / doctor role. A marksdwarf otherwise. :)

I find your rooms to be simplistically interesting, but I don't quite see the advantage of them over carved rooms/cells?

Ooh, can I be a part of this one at some point?

On a random, unrelated note: One of the randomly generated names for my latest embark group of dorfs was "The Basement of Virgins."
Title: Re: Let's Play some more Dwarf Fortress, HLP!

First order of business,
Ooh, can I be a part of this one at some point?
Yes, but not right this second, because I derped and forgot to add your name to "the list". It's on there now, and I'll get you in during the next session. In the meantime, why not let me know what your preferred profession is?

Resume the session, and some migrants trudge into our territorry. Good- we need the population and manpower, and for once, the fort isn't woefully unprepared for new arrivals.

And some time after the new arrivals, a dwarven caravan shows up. I snag their booze, cheap food, and a few "gems" of rough glass. The glass I get for two reasons: a) it's cheap, and b) there's a possibility that a moody dwarf might want some. Since Peakwind's site does not have sand (one of the site's few flaws, IMO), we'll need to import pure sand or pre-made glass.

Even before the migrants showed up, I started working on more substantial housing arrangements. I've already dug out a diversion of the brook to feed a well and a mini fishing pond. Also, this site has a particular interaction with the graphics pack that I'm finding rather upsetting- rhyolite walls and floors appear identical, and nearly black. Rhyolite is an igneous rock, and a large portion of Peakwind's site is composed of the stone. Fortunately, smoothed rhyolite is actually visible, in stark contrast to whatever insanity designated the rough stone.

Work continues on the living areas, and another wave of migrants arrive. This shot provides a nice clear image of the magma pipe I'm building the fort around. This z-level in particular is the level the lava's surface is at.

I friggin' knew it! We have a good amount of glass on hand.... except this clown wants more green glass, the cheapest type, and the one type I don't have extra of. (sigh) Never simple, is it?

Not wanting to lose the skilled moody glassmaker, I decide to break into the first cavern layer. Unfortunately, careful examination determines that there is no sand in this cavern. Urist McMoody is just going to have to hold out hope for the next caravan to bring some sand.

Some time later, some elves come knocking. In all the meantimes between caravans, I've had PhantomHoover cranking out stoneware trade goods. They aren't worth enough to buy out whole caravans (yet) but the value is more than enough to get useful supplies from any traders.

Lo and behold, the elves actually came through for once! I snap up some cloth, food, and all the sand they have.

Since Urist McMoody's already hogging one glass furnace, I order another one built post-haste. Using some coke leftover from the initial gear forging phase, the dwarves make some more lumps of green glass. Two lumps later, Urist McMoody gets to work.

And I am certainly glad he managed to get his work done! I think the description on this piece speaks for itself. ...except for one detail- a terrarium is functionally the same as a cage, and can be used for displays or traps. I'm using it as a centerpiece in the soon-to-be-unveiled main dining hall.

This is why I sealed off access to the caverns the instant I determined there was nothing useful for us down there. Now I know that a forgotten beast will never leave the fortress gamespace once it shows up, even if the thing eludes the Unit List for a time. I'm wiser now, and the dwarves of Peakwind won't be entering that cavern without a seriously-fortified backdoor to run to.

What's this? Deathfunner's got a big idea.

Somehow fitting that Peakwind's primary doctor would go and make something from bone. I'll use this throne as the "seat of power" for Peakwind's eventual leaders (mayor, Baron, etc), but for now, it'll make another nice centerpiece alongside the artifact terrarium.

Humies! Same drill, unload stone trinkets for food, seeds, booze, and cheap tools.

Let's now take a quick tour of Peakwind's new layout! This view should be familiar- this area was the initial multifunction floor. Going from left to right, we have the garbage heap and the butcher's shops, there's the room that will become the hospital, then we have the main farming area with two plots, then there's the main entrance with a series of stonefall traps behind the main doors. Because of that damned rough rhyolite, the stone around the trade depot is practically invisible, but I assure you it's there. The trade depot can be accessed from inside by a side door and a drawbridge. With a watch-llama out front, I can (hopefully) close off the side door and force ambush squads through the trapped main entrace. More traps are forthcoming, just you wait.

I apologize for the small icon size here, but I wanted to get this floor all in one shot. One level down from the entry area, we have the main productivity floor. Going clockwise from the lower-left corner, we've got a Loom, Clothier's Shop, a Leatherworks, a Forge, two Glass Furnaces, a Carpenter's Shop, Mechanic's Workshop, Craftsdwarf's Shop, and a Mason's Shop. Storage for appropriate raw materials and finished products is near the requisite workshops.

Behold the main living area. Again with the small icons, but there isn't a whole lot to see yet. Difficult to see on the right are the fishing hole and well (cursed rhyolite- I'm planning to have it all smoothed out). Looking left from there we see the main private quarters. Watsisson is in the process of smoothing out the walls and floors here first- it's an unbelievable pain in the arse to place furniture when you can't see the walls. Left of the quarters is the main food stockpile and the food-preparation-related workshops. Down from the food stockpile is the WIP Grand Hall. I'm actually planning on making the hall legitimately awesome- vaulted ceilings, extensive engravings, and windows overlooking a motherthumping volcano's mouth!

/me cracks knuckles and loosens up neck.
Now I'm going to go through a dossier for each dwarf currently serving in Wallbones. There's a lot of you, but here goes.

Redsniperson is serving as the Coordinator of Peakwind. He's the main administrator, trade broker, and is a pretty serious miner.

Polpolionson is a Digger. He's got no real secondary responsibilities at the moment (which I prefer for miners, actually), but I can keep you a little busier if you'd prefer.

Watsisson is the main Engraver. This position is quite the honor- I try to limit the Engraver roster to just one active dwarf at a time until they hit Legendary status. Wat's already a High Master, so he may be taking on an apprentice soon.

Scourgeson is a Fortifier, a mason/armorsmith combo and one of the starting seven (though he didn't have his name then). There isn't a lot of work for the metalworkers yet (this will change soon), so Scourge has been helping to produce stone furniture.

Caiaphas is on by IRC special request. He's fulfilling his lifelong dream of working stone, but as a Ranger he's also a skilled animal handler and marksdwarf.

Trashson is Peakwind's other Ranger, except that he's going to embrace his desire to fill the fort's enemies full of bolts.

Kobrarson is back as a ladydwarf Plant Processor. Animal Care doesn't really work, so you've got some impressive skills in Animal Training instead. I trust that's non-violent enough for your gentler reincarnation.

Deejayson's back as the Warsmith, combining skills in Weaponcrafting and Siege Engineering. He doesn't get a lot of day-to-day work, but he's really important when we need him.

Deathfunner is the Chief Medical Dwarf of Peakwind, with basic skill in all aspects of medicine and a recent Legendary status in boneworking. Let's hope it helps her patch up hurt dwarves.

Gortefson is back as the sole brodwarf Chemist. His responsibilities encompass working with chemicals, alchemy, soap making, and other "delicate" tasks.

Dsockwell is another IRC special request, and is the ladydwarf head Cook. Though excellently skilled, the other dwarves call her the "****cook", due to her near-compulsive use of an expletive that sounds quite similar to her informal job title.

Lorric is a Digger, primarily a miner with a small selection of random minor skills.

Borin (Firespawn) is a ladydwarf Presser selected for military duty. Though the infrastructure isn't quite there yet, Borin (Borette?) yearns to learn the ways of the hammer.

Hobbie is Peakwind's Gearsmith, the head Mechanic and a skilled Brewer. Also one of the starting seven, though named after the fact.

Dekkerson came to Peakwind as a skilled Siege Operator, but aspires to the status of Combat Engineer. Though there's no work with explosives in Dwarf Fortress, Siege Operator skill combined with a healthy base of Mechanics will fill much the same role: front-line work with traps and highly destructive siege engines.

PhantomHoover is an expert Bone Doctor, and she makes valuable trade goods from stone when there's nobody to fix up.

Z64555 is an expert Surgeon and a hobbyist Carpenter. If you've got an idea for some more jobs to do, speak up.

So, there we are. I also realize at the end of this that I forgot the description for SpardaSon's dwarf. You're in there, pal- I just forgot to get the sceencap, and I'll rectify that next time.

Coming soon: playing with lava!

Yes! Update! I'm a gearsmith AND starting seven! Woot!

And I have friends. That's always nice.

Now, for my next project: Lava pipes running alongside the bedrooms of the nobility for... heating purposes. Yep! Gotta be sure our illustrious leaders are kept nice and warm and toasty!

Actually it's probably best if I keep lever-controlled floodgates in each noble room just in case I need to do some emergency maintenance. Oh, and some grates down into the cavern system for a nice view...

Ranger? Archer+animal trainging combo?
Not bad. But do fix me up with a side sword in case I run out of arrows.

Also, since as a ranger there's not much to do most of the time, I'd like to also do whatever creative work is avilable. Smithing, carving...whatever.
Or I guess my days can be spent battle-training.

Yes. I've gender-switched a few other people as well since I prioritized starting skillset over gender. If this is an issue (though honestly, I'd have a hard time seeing why- I was really careful to give most people a badass dwarf), let me know and I'll try to work something out. Dekker, in your case particularly, skills relating to siege engines are very difficult to train. Since a Siege *Engineer* is a non-combatant who builds the weapons, and the Siege Operator actually flattens enemies with them, I went ahead and assumed you'd rather do the latter.

Interesting. I've half-heartedly tried macros in the past, but if there's now native macro support, I might just need to give it a good honest try.

I've had a look at my Lorric-dwarf. I hope he will serve you well.

"He is short and very skinny"

That doesn't seem a very good combination for a manual labourer!  :D

Oh, hey look a pretty big update. Caveat: I am writing this the day after, so I may have blanked on some finer details. Anyways, here we go.

First up, the dossier on Danteson. 'Danteson' is a family name, because Sparda's got a ladydwarf Woodcutter. As requested, she's marked to become an Axedwarf.

Next is 20percentcooler, as the Hammerer. In the Dwarven justice system, the Hammerer is effectively the executioner. Serious crimes like murder are punished with a certain number of blows from the Hammerer. 20percent is currently unarmed, but once I get the forge industry rolling, I'll craft up a badass Hammer of HLP Ownage for him to use.

Oh and what's this? Miners digging into the magma pipe? Sort of. I'm currently digging out a "main-line" for magma-powered furnaces and forges. The project will require a good bit of digging, so I'll keep posting progress pictures.

Migrants. Modest-sized group, nothing too remarkable.

Ah now we're getting somewhere. These side pipes will feed the actual forges and furnaces on the upper level. Just hang on for a sec, a more complete explanation is inbound.

Go up a z-level, and now you can see the actual alcoves for the forges and furnaces. There's a small side passage to allow access to the food/booze stockpile, and stairs connect this work area with the primary storage area with all the other fuel and metal. Now, here's the deal with magma furnaces: the level below a furnace needs to have a certain amount of magma filling it, and the furnace needs to have a channel dug out to directly access the magma. Only a single tile really needs magma, but I decided to just go with a lazier piping setup since we have an infinite magma supply.

Cut into the pipe using 'C'hanneling from above, and.... no flow. What? I had planned to have magma flowing passively from the pipe into the feed chamber, but it turns out I miscalculated the level of magma in the pipe! The surface of the magma is the next level down! ARGH!

No worries, though. There is another solution- screw pumps. Screw pumps move liquids from a lower z-level to their own z-level at a surprisingly fast rate, and magma counts as a liquid. Naturally, magma will destroy machines made of most materials.... but not all materials. Iron qualifies as "magma-safe", so I order pump components made from some of our remaining iron, and the area around the pipe incision is prepared for the machinery.

In the mean time, a caravan shows up. I toss a few trinkets their way and send them packing. We're doing some really important !!WORK!! here!

And here's the completed pump, depicted as a pair of barrels because of graphics derp. The pump can be powered either by an external power source like a windmill or water wheel, or by direct dwarfpower. A dwarf with the Pump Operator labor will stand on the pump and make it crank. Don't worry- the front end of the pump counts as a wall, so magma won't backwash and melt the operator. The square just to the right of the pump is covered by a grate to keep out any potentially nasty creatures living in the magma.

I order the pump to be manually operated, and Dekkerson rushes down to start cranking. Ladies and gentlemen, we have magma.

As Dekkerson fills up the magma supply tubes, one of Peakwind's woodcrafters gets extra-shifty all of a sudden.

Turns out he just wanted to make an artifact bracelet. Nice.

Here's the magma supply tube, almost completely full. The gray blotches to the north are smoke puffs from burning graphite chunks that were leftover from the excavation.

Around this time, Mongooseson and deathfunner decide to tie the knot. Congrats, you two.

So here's the new magma furnace area with smelters, glass furnaces, a kiln, and a forge established. Raw materials like ore, fuel, and metal will be held in the middle area, and some of the alcoves are unoccupied for potential expansion. Three smelters can process a lot of ore in a hurry, but Peakwind might need more capacity someday.

Just as the finishing touches are being put on the new forge area, one of the metalworkers becomes obsessed with a big idea!

And he makes a badass spear from a Pig Iron base. Pig Iron's not the greatest weapon material, but based on my evaluation of the raws, it should be roughly equivalent to a Copper spear, though of course the artifact status will help a lot.

And more migrants. There have also been a lot of new births- between the migrants and the babies, we're getting a pretty decent population. (About 140-ish by the end of this session)

This particular batch of migrants pushed us over the 80-dwarf threshold for sieges. While I think our surroundings are reasonably peaceful, the goblins will come knocking eventually, and we need to be ready. The "armed citizen" initiative is stalled for lack of materials, but I can get a gravity blender built in the meantime. Heheheh.

Also at some point, some dwarf decided to make an artifact wooden ring. Eh.

Still more migrants. Things are progressing quite nicely by now. The miners have uncovered multiple deposits of copper while preparing a "reinforced above-ground" farming plot. If we can just find an iron deposit, our vast stores of coke would permit us to make incredible amounts of steel. Of course, we have no eyes on iron yet.

Then all of a sudden, trouble! Merchants show up to trade, and two back-to-back goblin ambushes catch us perfectly with our pants down.

When the dust settles and all the surviving gobbos have been driven off, six dwarves lie dead and two are heavily injured. Sadly, Scourgeson is among the slain.

As Peakwind picks up the pieces following the attack, Trashson decides that this is a good time to start working on an artifact.

Annoyingly, Trashson was a cheeky bastard regarding his demands, and I had a lot of trouble figuring out what hung him up for quite some time. I even resorted to siezing any goods I could from the caravan via the Depot deconstruction trick, fearing that Trashson was hung up on Giant Cave Spider silk. Aggravatingly, he was not. Fearing the worst, I dug into the wiki, scouring the Strange Mood article for any potential diagnoses. The wiki revealed that Mooding dwarves will try to use materials in line with their preference if possible. Trashson likes dogs, so I figured maybe he wants dog leather or something. Turns out he wanted dog bones. Go figure- once he got the bones, he went ahead, scooped up a bunch of other materials, and finally got to work.

Were he not a named dwarf, I probably wouldn't have gone through such great lengths to save his project and his mind.

notbad.jpg A bone spear should be a pretty decent weapon, though I am surprised he went with the porcupine bone base. Whatever dude, it's your project, and we get another legendary crafter. Almost doesn't seem right to risk him in combat, but it's what he wants.

Because of the way I set up the well and the water system, our water supply is actually non-functional for a short period of time in the final weeks of winter. The river upstream freezes, but not the section of river nearer the fort, so water slowly drains from the map in the meantime. I decide to try and dig a quick-and-dirty detour around the frozen section, since some of the upstream river is still liquid. It ultimately doesn't work that well, and spring comes quickly enough.

Unfortunately, spring melts the ice, and Polpolionson apparently rolled a zero on his luck throw, disappearing into the river and drowning as the ice melted under his feet.

In an effort to try and make the detour safer and possibly more functional, I designate a quick stone flooring job to be done over the dugout area. A goblin ambush catches three unnamed laborer dwarves outside. I lock the doors and consign them to their fate, leaving the job half-done.

By now, it's pretty late, and my jimmies are more than a little rustled, so I'm gonna leave off on a downer note rather than pushing for a hopefully nicer ending. At this point, inattention or mistakes can easily result in more needless deaths, so I'll shove off for now. At present, ten dwarves of Peakwind are dead, along with a pet animal, and three other dwarves from our parent civilization.

Litany of the Fallen:
Scourgeson, slain by a goblin ambush
Polpolionson, drowned after falling through melting ice (body unrecoverable)

Actually, I lied just a bit. I do have a hopeful note to end on. Surveying the revealed area of the cavern a bit revealed two things that make me very happy. First is a large amount of Basalt. Basalt is a material that can hold hematite veins, meaning more than likely we're sitting on iron ore. Secondly, we have access to an assload of Marble, which is needed for Steel production as a flux stone. Bottom line: we've hit a bit of a rough patch, but I think we can start sticking it to those damned goblins before much longer. As far as construction accidents, well..... dwarves will be dwarves.

Alas, poor Scourgeson :(  Taken down by stinking gobbies :nono:
He apparently forgot how his ancestor once beat a kobold thief to death with his bare hands, and later rampaged and took out a pack of guard dogs, also bare-handed. And then how his vengeful ghost lopped off a dwarf's arm for giggles.

Hopefully this new ghost will be less vengeful.

Ok, little housekeeping update with some info regarding my plans for the Armed Citizen Initiative.

The Armed Citizen Initiative is exactly what it sounds like: I want every adult dwarf in Peakwind carrying a weapon, and some light armor as well. All citizens will be organized into squads and do a little weapon training for one month out of the year. Of course, there will be a standing full-time military, and I'm willing to set up a part-time crossbow militia for any dwarves that want to serve Peakwind, but don't want to be full-time soldiers.
----

So here's what I'm thinking- there will be a few different equipment "classes" for the non-military citizens of the fort.

A) Basic: Melee weapon, Chain shirt, Buckler. This class covers everybody not specifically mentioned below, and will be the most common assignment by far.

B) Medium: Melee weapon, Cap, Chain shirt, Gauntlets, Leggings, Low boots, (Buckler). This class is for Miners and Woodcutters, who are more likely to be exposed to hostiles or accidents. Middleweight armor will improve survivability without drastically hurting mobility. Miners need two hands for their pick and cannot use a shield.

C) Heavy: Melee weapon, Helm, Chain shirt, Breastplate, Gauntlets, Greaves, High boots, (Shield). This is effectively full military-grade protection, and will only be assigned to very swift and strong civilians who would otherwise qualify for Medium kit. I don't expect to give out many of these outfits, if any.

So, here's what I want from the rest of y'all: Your weapon preference, and if you want to be a part of the militia. Crossbows are incompatible with secondary weapons, unfortunately, so for organization's sake it would be easiest if you chose one or the other. I won't be assigning non-Miner, non-Woodcutter dwarves armor heavier than Basic class without a clear request for it. Even then, I may not approve such a request if a dwarf is not well-suited to the extra encumberance.

Now, did you put me into this LP as well? and as what? :o
Yeah, sorry about that. Your request to join must've gotten lost in the shuffle. Be sure to gimme some ideas for desired labors!

Unless they changed it, Miners use their picks as their weapons.  And attacking with a pick uses the Mining skill, which Miners tend to have really high scores in for some reason. :P

No no, experienced dwarven miners are brutal in combat since they have massive skill with their weapon and picks have insane armor penetration values since they're all sharp and pointy.  Not much can stop a party of angry dwarven miners on a rampage.

Picking right back up. Things are generally looking pretty good for Peakwind. We're sitting at a population of around 160 with plentiful food, drink, and nice rooms for everybody. Now if only we could get some iron and arm up the populace...

Start this session off right, with a mood!

Behold the glory of a legendary headscarf!

This guy really put a lot of work into this. So, apparently the first king of our civilization was a vampire. After seeing that little tidbit on this artifact, I do a cursory scan for vampires among Peakwind's population. Vampirism cannot be detected directly, but because they are ageless, vampires will immigrate with extreme skill levels and a LOT of former associations. Near as I can tell, we're free of bloodsuckers.

Oh wait, I was talking about iron? My hunch was extremely correct- Peakwind is indeed sitting on a motherlode of hematite ore.

"A sword for every dwarf" is a great political promise, but our metalworkers need another focus right at the moment- a gravity blender. I order two more magma forges built and a LOT of iron/copper trap weapons turned out. The drop on this blender is a little shallow for my tastes at the moment, but improving the trap will be an ongoing project.

Oho, a child has a big idea now!

Epic wooden crown to stick it to the elves, and Peakwind will have another legendary woodcrafter once this kid comes of age.

Well, it had to happen eventually. Good news is that the siege is pretty small, about two dozen crossbow troopers led by a mounted spearmaster.

And shortly after, an Ettin (two-headed giant) decides to join the fun! Which was a really bad move for the Ettin.

The giant and the gobbos start fighting. After a bit of back-and-forth, a couple goblins are dead, and the Ettin perishes after taking dozens of bolts.

The goblins get bored and leave after a couple of months, and a caravan from the Mountainhomes follows a few weeks later. We trade away some of dsockwell's masterful cooking and some otherwise-useless craft goods for a bounty of wood, food, booze, and other useful things.

Shortly thereafter, a Matlecrafter (umbrella term for Clothier and/or Leatherworker) starts to obsess over a project.

Our Mantlecrafter crafts a leather low boot fit for a dwarven rap superstar. So much bling!

The gravity blender progresses. Because I'm a mean SoB ruthless defender of the fort, the weapon traps get progressively stronger as one advances down the spiral. At the moment, there's nothing after the spiral, but I'd be truly impressed if anything actually manages to reach the stairs in the middle there.

The history of Peakwind will be paved with artifacts, apparently. Now a Bowyer wants to try something.

Oh god, recursive weapon artifact! If an enemy gets to close to this weapon's wielder, our dwarf can just get the invader to look closely at the crossbow. The invader will be mystified by the recursive decoration long enough to let our trooper clobber him. (I may have made some of that up.)

This time, a siege won't slow us down or trap us underground.

Well, that would have sounded a lot more badass if the gravity blender were ready right when the invaders showed up. The final stretch here will take quite some time to set up- each unfinished trap is loaded with the maximum ten weapons. In this case, the weapons are master-crafted giant iron spikes. Hobbie, dekkerson, and the other Machinists work round-the-clock to set up the traps.

I created a secondary entrance to the fort between the sieges and secured the entrance with a drawbridge. Once the traps are ready, I order all civilians back inside, lock the doors and lower the bridge. The goblins, trolls, and other horrid creatures begin their march into Peakwind's halls...

And the dumb brutes get mulched, most before even reaching the blender proper. The siege turns and flees after suffering about 15% casualties, mostly trolls and all KIA with extreme prejudice. Once the last smelly goblin flees the map, I allow the Machinists to pry the bits of troll (blue blood) and goblin out of the jammed traps, and everybody else scoops up the abandoned weapons and gear. I call the blender a success!

Oh **** me. Always something. Apparently at some point, a Matlecrafter decided to try and make something, but I forgot about him and he really didn't like that. And he's going to express his disapproval via axemurder.

Who'd have thought the ****er had so much blood in him? Before finally being put down through the combined efforts of the Diggers, and a ramshackle squad of Woodcutters, Obok McAxemurder claimed 8 lives, including his own child and redsniperson. DeeJayson took a bad hit in the arm, but will keep the limb. Lorric lost a foot and permanently requires a crutch now, but is otherwise fully capable of still working. The Diggers really took it on the chin as the first responders- most of the dead were miners who tried to fight the berserker. I draft a few dwarves with fringe skills into the ranks of the Diggers to recoup our losses.

Never again. The Armed Citizen Initiative is now the top priority. With about half the fort's 184 dwarves babies or children, we need more immediate-response capability. Yes, I acknowledge that arming all adults does potentially increase the risk of contagious violence, and ups the ante even more in preventing insanity, but I think that distribution of armor and weapons will allow us better damage-control ability. Oh, and having doors on all workshops compatible with moods. D'oh.

Actually quite a bit of awesome stuff.

I've had you in for a while, I just forgot to post your profile. You're currently one of Peakwind's two legendary-level Weaponcrafters. (And, yes, "Metalworker" is another of those umbrella terms I use for organization in Dwarf Therapist)

Also, I've had Scotty in for a while. I don't remember why I forgot to post these.
After the incident with the berserker, Scotty is the only legendary-level Miner in Wallbones, max-level at the coveted "legendary+5" level. There are a good number of less-skilled Miners under Scotty's command, but he's got more job XP than all of them combined. Scotty is also the replacement Manager following redsniperson's demise. Managers are really important in a big fort like Peakwind, since they let me handle large numbers of crafting/work orders with less effort.

@esarai, I'll get you in the next time I play. I think I've got an unnamed Siege Engineer running around somewhere, but if Medium kit slows you down too much, I'm gonna bounce you to Basic-plus.

Lorric lost a foot and permanently requires a crutch now

 :eek2:  :shaking: :sigh: :(

Apparently at some point, a Matlecrafter decided to try and make something, but I forgot about him and he really didn't like that. And he's going to express his disapproval via axemurder.

THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!!!  :hopping: :mad2:

-

Obok McAxemurder claimed 8 lives

I'm just happy to still be alive under those circumstances!  :D

The Diggers really took it on the chin as the first responders- most of the dead were miners who tried to fight the berserker.

I hope I got some good hits in on that mad-dwarf for you  :)

RIP Redsniperson  :(

In light of recent events and the sizeable list of the deceased (there are a lot more dead than just the three Named), I think this is a good time to have a little discussion about funerary rites.

Dwarves are going to die. Despite any level of attention and care I try to provide, mistakes will be made and unforeseeable things will happen. Therefore, it is prudent to have an established system for dealing with Peakwind's fallen.

Here's what I'm thinking. Everybody can choose a funeral method (which I will detail shortly) and whatever embellishments they may want on their final memorial/resting place (material and decorations for memorial stone/coffin for a basic burial).

The funeral methods I'm thinking are:
1.) Simple burial. Body is recovered and placed into a coffin in the as-yet-unbuilt Hall of History. Common dwarves will be guaranteed, at minimum, space for a coffin and a memorial stone. All fallen will receive at least a memorial slab to prevent angry ghosts from appearing.
2.) Cremation A. A chamber for magma cremation will be established, and the used magma will return to the magma pipe, re-uniting the honored dwarf with the flames and the earth for all eternity.
3.) Cremation B. Magma cremation will be performed, but the used magma will be piped into the network that fuels the magma forges. The fallen dwarf's spirit will live on as an eternal part of Peakwind, and his spirit will find indirect vengeance by helping to forge new weapons and armor.

A memorial slab is not negotiable, since a cenotaph (ceremonial empty coffin used for destroyed/unrecoverable bodies) is not enough to suppress ghost arrivals. Cremation demands explicit approval from the owner of the fallen dwarf, owing to its irreversible nature. Owners of a dwarf whose body is irretrievable or lost may decide whether they want a cenotaph or not.

Upon special request, or at my discretion, fallen dwarves may be granted a personalized tomb. The fanciness of said tomb will be tied to the awesomeness or a dwarf in life and/or the "heroicness" of their death.

EDIT: After Phantom Hoover made a rather specific funeral request, I've decided to take two actions. First, there is now a new burial option:
4) Obsidianization. Initially similar to both types of cremation, the soul-laden magma will be flash-solidified to obsidian rather than piped elsewhere. Said obsidian can then be crafted into a stone item of some sort, even including a shortsword (be forewarned, however, that obsidian is a ...lackluster material compared to any metals). It would be best to make mention of what item your lithified remains should be crafted into.

Secondly, I'm generally willing to accept ideas for unique burial methods that differ from those previously stated, so long as the method wouldn't require a ridiculously extravagant expenditure of labor and resources.

I'm pretty sure it depends on whether they're made of magma-safe materials, so you can use the right types of rock for the crematory coffin (what kind of dwarf wants to be laid to rest, however temporarily, in wood?). Me, I want to have magma poured onto my coffin, then water poured onto the magma, then the resultant obsidian mined out and made into a sword.

obsidianization was not an option, now was it? for the cremation options, a wooden coffing would do perfect, cause, y'know, temporary vessel that transfers yer bones to an appropriate cremation station.

It is now! I'm a little self-annoyed for not having thought of it, but obsidianization can definitely be arranged. I've updated the earlier burial methods post to reflect a few changes. I'll include the changes here for those who don't want to go back and hunt through the earlier thread.

Back up and running again. Took me longer to get to the LP than I would have liked, but IRL always has a way of stepping in. At any rate, let's get to it.

First off, let's introduce Esarai as a ladydwarf Machinist: Good attributes and exceptional skills in Siege Engineering. As a Machinist, Esarai will also be responsible for general mechanics and architecture work.

Soon enough, one of Peakwind's many children gets an idea for an artifact. She scampers off an claims a Craftsdwarf's shop... but doesn't start collecting materials right away. As I prepare to diagnose her major malfunction....

....a goblin hitsquad shows up and tries to mess with the merchants still chilling at the Depot. No matter to me: the fort is well-isolated from the outside world now that we've finished our business. The merchants manage to chase off the goblins without my help anyways.

(Sigh) Bureaucracy. In order to arm all adult dwarves, all dwarves need to be in military squads. I group as best I can- Scotty's Diggers in one squad, TrashSon's Fortress Guard archers in another, assorted named dwarves with weapon preference in yet another, then the rest go into squads as I go down the list. This part is a pain because of how the interface handles assignments, but I eventually figure out some tricks and get everybody assigned.

In the midst of all this, I have not forgotten about the young one with artifact ambitions. After a few false starts, I determine that the kid didn't have enough stacks of bones on hand. The creepy girl wanted a total of three, and repays my attention with a pig-bone earring. Stylish.

With the artifact concerns out of the way, I start work on the magma crematorium. Location is critical, since I want magma to easily flow into the chamber, out of the chamber, and back into the reserve for the forges. Oh, and I need a way to add water to the mix. After several minutes of searching, I finally determine that location depicted here to be ideal.

.....and I knew I ****ed something up somewhere along the line. Two kobold squads managed to get past the gravity blender and into the dormitory area. I activate all militia assets to take down the scaly bastards, but the fight is still messy since most of the kobolds have ranged weapons. Very quickly I realize what my mistake was- I left the inner and outer drawbridges for the blender down. Kobolds will be invisible to me until a dwarf actually spots them, and the scaly bastards do not set off floor traps. Three nameless dwarves pay for my mistake, and a few Named suffer some injuries- no amputations, though.

Fun. As the battle against the kobolds continues, a goblin assault force arrives. Thankfully, the kobolds feel their losses scant seconds later and flee the fortress, saving me the decision to lock the first invaders in. With the kobold survivors back outside, I button up the fort, pick up the pieces and prepare to deal with the goblins.

Guh- always something. Another child becomes obsessed with creating an artifact now, of all times. The goblins are safely isolated from the fort's squishy bits, but I'd still prefer to deal with the invaders first. Besides, even if my attention lapses, I have a door on the workshop alcove this time. I say "no mas!" to berserk axemurders.

Borin "Balrogbait" has died from... ....uh, that's.... new, uh- has died from old age. Shame you never got to chop up any goblins, son, but you'll get the cremation you requested. Your crotchety spirit shall live on in vengeance.

With everything in order, I open the access gates to the gravity blender. It works marvelously... until I realize that I had brutally blundered once again. Some of the temporary walkways were still in place, allowing the invaders to bypass the most potent parts of the spiral! A few goblins riding on giant olms manage to infiltrate the fortress, but I'm not certain they came from the blender area.... of all places, I think they entered through the well. Giant olms are amphibious, so assuming a goblin rider can hold his breath long enough, a little swim is a great covert insertion.

All in all, about three or four goblin-olm pairs manage to get in, and are beaten by mass dogpiling. Somehow, casualties are generally light, but a few dwarves are slain, including the unfortunate Hobbie. The remaining goblins flee, but a lone Giant Olm chills in the plumbing beneath the fort, prolonging the Siege status. Dislodging an aquatic creature can be a major pain in the ass, so I'll just wait for the olm to get bored and leave.

With the goblins (virtually) dealt with, I turn my attention back to the young go-getter. He wanted some bone stacks too, and gets right to work once he has the needed materials.

And Peakwind is rewarded with a badass treasure chest made from dog bones.

As Peakwind's dwarves clean up the fort, reset the traps, and loot the dead goblins, a caravan of elves shows up. Huh, guess that Olm got bored sooner rather than later. I fork over looted goblin clothing and trinkets in exchange for all the wood and booze the elves are carrying. Essentials, you know?

Most of the fort has moved on, but one of the Stokers is apparently still pissy about one of his friends dying in an attack. This clown's been throwing tantrums off-and-on for some time, but this time he managed to cross the line. In the process of picking a fight with Kobrarson, the Stoker threw a punch that dented Kobrarson's skull, killing Kobrarson.

Now I'm pissed, but the deranged Stoker is now on the target list for the Justice system. I pass a conviction on him, and TrashSon carries out punishment: a beating. Hm. Not what I'd have gone for, but hopefully he's learned his lesson.

LOLNOPE. The angry ****wit Stoker picks another fight, this time with a low-level Metalworker. Somehow the Metalworker winds up dying too. Dwarven Justice prescribes another beating, but I've already got something else in mind. One "accidental" murder, I can grudgingly swallow, two and I will retaliate.

As I fume and put the finishing touches on a particular project, a Cook decides to start an artifact too. Thankfully he gets right to it, given how mad I am right now, I don't think I'd have the patience to play "guess what material I want huehuehue".

Now I am absolutely livid. I no longer give a flying **** what Dwarven Justice says. IRON JUSTICE demands death.

Way to try and defuse the situation, Mr. NoName McCook. Make an artifact figurine of Obok McAxemurder in the act of axemurder. Thank you for reminding me of my duty to IRON JUSTICE.

IRON JUSTICE in this case is a live-fire testing of the magma crematorium. I only held off this long because I needed to install safety and control systems. I order the Machinists to install a lone lever in the chamber, profiled only for Stoker McAngry. No doubt sensing my furious wrath, the Stoker finally consents to his fate. Once the heavy iron doors locked behind him, Stoker begins to lash out, throwing his last tantrum. The magma control lever is thrown, and Stoker McAngry's rage meets a hotter fire. Once the chamber is full, I have the dwarves pump any magma tainted by the fool's spirit drained back into the magma pipe. Stoker McAngry apparently had been issued an axe as well- once the chamber is safe to enter, I order the axe destroyed, even though the logs indicate it never killed any of Peakwind's dwarves. IRON JUSTICE has been served.

A human caravan shows up some time later and is accosted by goblins. Since the wagons were severely disrupted by the attack, they never reach the depot and I never bother trading with them.

At some point, Scotty ran off to claim a Mason's Workshop. I missed the initial mood message, but certainly caught the "construction initiated" message. I am excite.

After quite a bit of resource gathering and work, Scotty unveils an amazing door built from a graphite base.

The annual dwarven caravan shows up, but before I can welcome them into the fort....

...a Kobold archer squad shows up and takes out our outpost liason. (sigh). Not like I could have done anything to help anyways, the Kobolds spawned right next to the poor diplomat! As is our classical response, I button up and lock the doors. The caravan will have to fend for itself.

And at long last, I can perform the funerary rites requested by four of Peakwind's own some time ago. Recommended listening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WS2sh50Sbqg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WS2sh50Sbqg)

"...and as all Dwarves are born of the earth, let us commend these four souls to the earth's fiery blood...."

"Redsniperson. Kobrarson. Borin. Scourgeson.

Return to the flames, and may your spirits guide our craftsmen. Help them forge sword and spear, help them forge hammer and axe, help them forge shield and plate...."

"Redsniperson. Kobrarson. Borin. Scourgeson.

Return to the flames, and help Peakwind slay its enemies!"

At long last, I finally establish a proper Hall of History for Peakwind's fallen and its greatest works. I intend to improve the artifact storage later, but for now I'm happy to have them all in one place. Some other good news is that every adult in the fort now has a weapon of some sort equipped. All earlier requests have been honored (except for armor, that's next), and the no-name dwarves are carrying a mix of swords and axes, with a handful of spears mixed in.

From special IRC request, welcome Hades to the fortress. Hades' official title is the "Wordsmith", which makes him the serving bookkeeper. Hades is also a skilled Carpenter.

And that will be all for now.

Litany of the Fallen:
Scourgeson, slain by a goblin ambush
Polpolionson, drowned after falling through melting ice (body unrecoverable)
redsniperson, slain by a crazed fellow dwarf
Borin "Balrogbait", died of old age
Hobbie, slain by a goblin swordsman
Kobrarson, slain by a fellow dwarf with anger management problems

As well as any dwarf could be expected to: as in, if they don't die or snap, they just shrug it off. You'll be on a crutch for the rest of your life (Toady, why haven't you implemented prosthetics yet?), but you can continue to work and live as normal. You will be a bit slower than usual, and have less-than-stable footing in a scuffle, but are otherwise unchanged.

Coffin for me, yo!

Also, if Hobbie has a child, redorf me into him/her as Hobbieson. Or another dorf. Whatever's free. :P
Yup. Already have you interred in the Hall of History, and I think you have children, so the line will continue.

So apparently I'm a real boss.  That makes me a Legendary what else in addition to mining?
I believe that a moody dwarf's highest skill is counted when making an artifact, and your highest skill was Mining. Which means that, unfortunately, you gained no new skills from your artifact.

More beatings.
The Dwarven Justice demands it!
You could imagine this being a vicious cycle.

Gets it out of his system by killing someone - takes a beating - angry again, gets it out of his system by killing someone - takes a beating - angry again, gets it out of his system by killing someone...
This is actually how a lot of tantrum spirals start. Which is why Stoker McAngry had to be melted down. He wasn't able to pour some cheerup on his paincakes, and his apparently hulk-like strength would invariably kill somebody important/popular and piss off the rest of the fort. I don't enjoy deliberately killing or dooming my own dwarves (unless they're an unrepentant cocksucker noble), but this was the most expedient way to handle the problem. Hm... maybe some "isolation time-out" cells are in order....

Ah, that's good. I don't know much about this game, so it's good to know Lorric shouldn't be a ticking time-bomb. Though if he did go mad, I wouldn't be putting money on a one-footed dwarf in an ass kicking contest. :)

Heh. I guess it made the same kind of sense to the creator too. Well, if time-out cells would work, it would be a good idea, save you having to squander additional dwarves.

You might be able to calm down chronically angry dorfs by making some ridiculously nice rooms and assigning them for a while. This also has the added bonus of pissing off the nobles.

So..... there WAS going to be a hilariously terrible story associated with today's update, but Dwarf Fortress decided to do THIS to me:

I swear on whatever you all will accept that this is a complete accident. Truly, I was fully prepared to roll with the disaster that had unfolded, but Dwarf Fortress decided it wasn't to be. Basically, a shortage of pants caused a near-tantrum spiral since dwarves apparently cannot handle being uncovered. A LOT of adult dwarves bought it, including many Named. This even follows a distribution of iron chain shirts to all adults. At least the final stage of the Armed Citizen Initiative did in fact wind up saving lives- most of the dead were berserkers put down by the militias, unequipped children, or dwarves who snapped non-violently and starved.

Not that it matters, since the crash rolled everything back. I'll try and update from this very rare reprieve from disaster as soon as I can.

So I suppose the best way to start here is with a post-mortem from the alternate timeline. One thing that may not have been clear from my rather brief previous post is that clothing will degrade and eventually disappear over time. The timeframe appears to be around 5-6 years per article of clothing, and Peakwind had reached its seventh year in the "lost" session. Apparently the thoughts associated with clothing degradation and the lack of clothing are VERY strong, and when most adults had their clothing start disintegrating around the same several in-game months, well, things got rough.

Preface: the "concern addresses" that I'm doing here only apply to the Lost Session, and ARE NOT effective in the operating "prime" timeline.

I'm in the milita...armored and armed. I should be good...I hope...
Nope. You snapped non-violently and started running around gibbering. Tough break. I want to emphasize again, though, that you are very much OK in the active timeline.

I tinkered with chemicals. Dunno if that's a good or a bad thing.

But at least I can't be the cause of that kind of a problem... I think. :nervous:
Not your fault. Non-armor clothing naturally degrades over time.

I imagine that's good for me. With the place in chaos, I can't see the one-footed Lorric having a very good survival chance.
I *think* you were mostly OK during the chaos. Your dwarf has actually gotten really familiar with crutchwalking, and is barely slower than a normal dwarf now.
--------------------

Back to the Prime Timeline.

i was a craftsdwarf or something i think?
Doctor, with some various craftsdwarf skills.

Also, Hobbie. After doing due diligence on your dwarf and his relations, I am not pleased to inform you that he never married. If you would really like to be re-incarnated, we can work something out- I have some ideas, but I'd like to hear your opinion first.

Actually, let me extend the offer of re-incarnation to any fallen Named who may want it. Hobbie nonwithstanding, most of the Named do have children at this point, so the little buggers make a pretty natural avenue to buying back in.

Hokay, so. As I start wrapping my head around the reverted state of the fortress, a child decides to start work on an artifact.

And the little scamp proves himself to be one of the most metal individuals in the fort, crafting a gorgeous chest out of a goblin's legbone. Bruuuutuuuul!

Remembering the cluster**** that was the Cockpocalypse in the Lost Session, I immediately queue up a ton of clothing production orders. Aggravatingly, I also need to re-queue all the chainshirt production orders too. I am less annoyed by needing to re-do the production order, and far more irked at needing to go through the clunky assignment interface again. Whatever. It needs to be done. Even a little bit of armor DOES save lives.

Shortly thereafter, Peakwind's last Mantlecrafter decides to start working on an artifact of his own.

Then things start to happen quickly. An allied creature of some sort spots a Kobold ambush....

...just before an Elven caravan arrives....

...and gets jumped by two more Kobold killsquads. The Elves start getting hacked apart...

...then even more Kobolds join the fun. See kids, this is why we have drawbridges.

I'm not risking any soldiers to save some smelly elves. Some time after the remains of the caravan flee or died (I wasn't really watching the battle), that Mantlecrafter unveiled a pleasant surprise- a badass copper buckler. Not sure, but I *think* that artifact netted Peakwind another high-level Metalworker. Need to check that.

Some time passes. I conscript several otherwise lightly-occupied dwarves to help with the textile industry, and the Clothiers start turning out swag duds as quickly as materials can be made. Iron chainshirts are made for all the adults and distributed. A human caravan comes knocking, and for the first time in a while, I'm actually able to trade away some of our collected goods- a big pile of pillaged goblin stuff, some of our own stonecrafts, and a sampler of dsockwell's decadent cooking.

Around this time, I decide this is a good time to fulfil a promise I made a while back- the promise of 20percentcooler's Hammer of HLP Ownage. With no suitable artifacts produced (yet), he'll have to "settle" for a masterwork steel hammer, tastefully decorated in HLP colors (sorta).

I forgot to add a highlight here, but it shouldn't be too hard to make out what I'm about to describe. Since the decoration process is rather haphazard, I like to create a "pimpworks" where I can decorate specific items. In this case, the Pimpworks is the leftmost blister of new workshops and open space. Using it properly requires some abuse of garbage dumps and dwarf-specific levers to get the materials and skills I want in one place, but the effort is worth it for special items.

Our business now completed with the human caravan, the inevitable collection swarming begins. Seeing the near-entirety of the fort mobilizing towards a particular goal is nothing short of mesmerizing.

Later, a Doctor gets a big inspiration from something and trots off to a workshop. Trouble is, he wants some shells. Which I don't have. Shells in general are actually a rather rare material, primarily coming from certain types of "fish", and even then only when specially prepared. Peakwind's fishing industry is miserable, so we're going to have trouble fulfilling that demand.

As I mull my options, including a potential assault on the cavern layer with a Forgotten Beast, the annual Dwarven caravan shows up. The caravan won't be able to help with our moody dwarf, but I'll happily snap up all the cloth they have, since we're still running a bit short to keep the clothiers supplied. Caravns are no good for shells since the fish they carry are pre-prepared, and cannot yield a shell.

I did start preparing a contingency, however. A small enclosed stone "finger" to allow covered access to the brook might eventually yield some turtles or other shelled creatures. The work is done quickly, and I activate most of the skilled fisherdwarves on the roster. Then I wait.

Just as the caravan arrives at the depot, the sounds of goblin war drums sound in the distance. Fortunately, all the wagons and escort troopers reach the hardened trade alcove in time to be sealed in. Dsockwell's dishes again comprise the majority of our export to this caravan, seeing as we've already offloaded our war loot.

Eventually the fisherdwarves scrape up a few mussels. I have the mussels cleaned posthaste, and the moody crafter snaps up the leftover shells. For my trouble, we get an earring depicting some history.

With everything in order, I direct the dwarves to prepare the gravity blender for use. The maintenance walkways are retracted, the area marked off-limits, and the drawbridge opened to draw the stupid invaders in. Most of the early interlopers are utterly mulched, but a few lucky goblins survive both the traps and the drop- one particularly fortunate bowmaster survived both with only a mangled toe! I activate four militia squads and move them into an ambush position, prepared to dogpile the dangerous goblin. Lucky for me, the stupid gobbo decides not to take the stairs leading to the fort, but backtracks, taking the stairs leading to the deadly center of the trap spiral. The bowmaster, and a few other lucky goblins who survive their falls, don't survive their escape attempt.

Note to self: the blender needs a much greater drop. This means securing the first cavern layer. Need plan to kill lurking Forgotten Beast. Will address later.

Perhaps inspired by the amazing killrate of the gravity blender, a child slinks off to start working on something big.

We have had the most metal little kids this time around. Forged from the bones of a goblin invader's mount, we get a shield depicting some local history- a Kobold running off with some discarded goods.

That'll do it for now. That was a lot more fun than the Lost Session, and this is one of the few times I'm glad the game crashed. I won't savescum this LP, but it looks like Dwarf Fortress decided to savescum for me.

Litany of the Fallen:
Scourgeson, slain by a goblin ambush
Polpolionson, drowned after falling through melting ice (body unrecoverable)
redsniperson, slain by a crazed fellow dwarf

Hobbie, slain by a goblin swordsman
Kobrarson, slain by a fellow dwarf with anger management problems

Boring (but gruesome!) way: set up a route into your fortress with a ****ton of fully-loaded upright spears along the way. Connect them all to a lever somewhere, have a dwarf pull it on repeat. That should be enough to kill anything, even trapavoids. More practical, more boring, more gruesome alternative: just put the spikes at the bottom of the gravity blender; they'll impale creatures falling onto them.

First off, let's introduce Esarai as a ladydwarf Machinist: Good attributes and exceptional skills in Siege Engineering. As a Machinist, Esarai will also be responsible for general mechanics and architecture work.
Yes! You've been an important player in setting up the Gravity Blender and the magma crematorium, in addition to plenty of other mechanical engineering projects.

I'm worried about mine, am i dead or am i just not doing anything noteworthy xD
You've been quietly turning out mounds of high-quality arms and armor. In fact, the dorf Patriot has been instrumental in getting the Armed Citizen Initiative completed in a reasonable amount of time.

I'm pretty good at sorting out if somebody dies or if general bad things happen to them. It's usually safe to assume that your dwarf is living just fine if I haven't specifically mentioned them.

------
Regarding the beast, I'm probably going to go with a cowardly-but-safe cavern collapse to kill it. Because I have no intel on the creature's somatic composition (the thing could be made of adamantine for all I know) or the virulence of its poison (which I think can reach any dwarf in ranged attack range- marksdwarves behind fortifications would NOT be safe), I don't want to begin with a head-on attack.

Could my dorfs ingenuity in chemicals help with the beast? Like, if it can spit poison then let's throw some other nasty stuff on it in exchange.
Unfortunately at the moment, "chemistry" is limited to soap-making and getting extracts from plants and animals. Bummer, I know. Supposedly there are ways to "poison" weapons for the soldiers of a fort, but it's difficult and has a massive backfire potential if any part of the procedure is done wrong. Read: it involves deliberately contaminating weapons with the dust, poison, or blood of a Forgotten Beast, and any poisons worth using would make the weapons lethal to even handle without protection.

I've got all the reincarnation requests noted, and I'll get the requested replays in the next time I advance the session.

Well... make the beast slip on a soap :P

I can understand the danger of having poisoned weapons in the middle of moody dwarves.

After weeks of tense (I'm sure) waiting, another installment in the (mis)adventures of Peakwind has arrived. Well, a short installment, but I'll try to get another update posted before the next three weeks have elapsed. I started this session with one goal in mind: kill that Forgotten Beast so that the dwarves can extend the gravity blender's deathdrop further down to improve the already-prodigious killrate.

Before anybody asks, I do have the reincarnation requests from earlier in the thread logged. Haven't acted on them yet, but I will get to it in the next session.

First up, as part of an old request on IRC, welcome Mura to the fort as a Mason.

Oddgrim, you have not been forgotten. I picked the first male archerdwarf I could find on the list, and as it so happens, you're also Peakwind's Captain of the Guard and the current reigning Mayor. Unintentional but awesome.

Right away, I've identified a suitable location for our Forgotten Beast trap, and I order Scotty and his miner cadre to get to digging. The trap will have two major components: the first is a series of narrow winding hallways that can be isolated by retracting bridges. The floor of these hallways will be festooned with deadly retractable spikes, and will be the initial kill mechanism. Should the spikes fail for whatever reason, the second part of the trap is a big slab of stone suspended above the maze. The sole support mechanism will be linked to a safely remote trigger, and remotely dismantling the support will cause the slab to fall, obliterating anything in its path. And I mean ANYTHING- a cave-in will instantly kill any creature(s) caught under the falling ceiling regardless of all factors. I like to think of an engineered cave-in as similar to a Dwarven nuke: a lot of work to set up, finicky to trigger properly, but peerlessly destructive when operating as intended.

And the maze takes shape. Other sections of the trap are being shaped at the same time, but the precise nature of the work makes it tedious to document.

The first of the few distractions this session takes the form of a Possessed child. He gets to work soon enough, and I get back to overseeing the delicate trap-building work.

A more epic face veil you will never behold! Ok, you might, but there can't be many better.

In a surprising twist, Esarai unseats Oddgrim as Mayor of Peakwind! I re-shuffle the Mayoral Quarters to Esarai's hands, and bash out a modest-yet-nice office for Oddgrim to continue his military oversight duties. Esarai gets right to throwing her new power around and starts making mandates for the production of battleaxes. During this session, she mandated a total of about six new weapons, but I'm actually not irritated by the demand- the oldest children will start coming of age soon and that means Peakwind will need a lot of new choppy, stabby, and slashy tools. I think Esarai's just fine for a new Noble.

Whoops. Looks like I forgot about a mook Clothier who perished in some fight or another. Not a big deal- this particular spirit was content to just sit around while I was handling the situation. I already had memorial stones carved for the rank-and-file dead, so I just plop this guy's headstone at the appropriate coffin, which apparently never got filled. Ah well, once the stone is down the ghost goes away quickly enough.

Rigging up each spike emplacement to a remote trigger is a slow process, and takes much longer than the structural excavation required by the trap. As the Machinists work, I stay focused on keeping the fort running smoothly. A Human caravan presents a useful opportunity to diversify certain resource stockpiles.

In addition to remaining the "commander-in-chief" of Peakwind's army, Oddgrim is also one of the few dwarves in the fort with an Appraiser skill, which allows him to accurately gauge the value of trade goods. The late redsniper was the earlier trade broker, but Oddgim does a fine job of filling the gap. As is becoming a tradition, we offload some of dsockwell's divine "****cooking" for a bounty of wood, gems, metal ingots, and basic foodstuffs.

A mystic spirit of creativity grabs another of Peakwind's children, and this tyke scampers off to the nearest crafting shop to work on something amazing.

That "something amazing" turns out to be a stone mug fit for an emperor, depicting an epic frieze telling the tale of an ancient ogress' rise to infamy as an enemy of our civilization in an age long past.

As the humans pack up and head out, I get a message for a kobold ambush. Turns out the "ambush" was a single kobold archer. Poor bastard got one-shotted by the closest caravan guard. According to the combat log, the responder was a human spearman who charged the kobold once the critter left stealth. The spearman closed the distance as the kobold was distracted shooting at a merchant. A lowered shoulder combined with the spearman's forward momentum knocked the crude bow from the kobold's hands and stunned the little skulker. Presented with an opportunity for an easy strike, the spearman lunged forward and thrusted the spear upwards under the kobold's chin. The spear sliced through pretty much everything important in the kobold's neck, and the spearman's followthrough on the strike tore the poor creature's head clean off in a bloody arc! (I may have embellished some of that account for the hell of it)

Not long after the caravan safely clears the map, the trap is ready for action. I've tested all mechanical systems other than the cave-in release and chained up a cat in the middle of the maze for bait (hostile creatures will instinctively seek out the nearest "friendly" creature they can path to). A volunteer miner digs out the last chunk of rock separating the trap from the rest of the cavern, and Os the Forgotten Beast stalks into the trap.

The emaciated, mutant frog-beast enters the spider's web. The cat is a forgone conclusion, but the unfortunate feline offers enough of a distraction for Os' bloodlust that the bridges in the maze can be retracted, trapping the dumb beast in the maze!

Os wanders aimlessly around the maze's corridors, and I order one lucky mook dwarf to continuously cycle the steel spikes. Turns out my fears of Os' somatic composition were overblown- the frog dies easily enough after some repeated hits, giving in to blood loss shortly after this image is captured.

I re-open access to the maze, and workers come to clean up the cat's remains and haul off Os' carcass. Though "emaciated", this Forgotten Beast will provide the fort with a god's worth of food when butchered.

Gotta cut it short here, but I promise I'll do everything I can to get another update out soon.

I have a dream that one day my four little children will live in a peakwind where they are judged not by the content of their character, but by the sharpness of their axe.  I have a dream...

Back at it. I'll start by saying that this is a content-light update despite taking a lot of time to run- I'll explain shortly.

So with the beast dead, Scotty's miner corps gets right to digging the gravity blender pit even deeper. And it suddenly becomes obvious why the pit was originally left at its earlier depth. It may not be terribly obvious from this screencap, but digging down on broken terrain like this is very time-consuiming and tedious. Because of cave-in risks, I have to make channel (dig down) deisgnations one strip of tiles at a time and wait for that whole strip to be excavated before marking the next strip. Dwarves being dwarves, all possible workers will descend upon a relatively small work area, each at their own pace. Nonetheless, I push on.

A human trading caravan shows up within a few minutes.

And like clockwork, a smelly Kobold ambush follows.

With some friends. I don't recall if I've posted any shots showing the "depot airlock" in action, so here we are. Basically, the Trade Depot is sandwiched between two sets of drawbridges, and the bridges cross over simple pits. Although some monsters can destroy buildings (like bridges), and some can also fly, no monsters are smart enough to combine those talents, so this is about as safe a front door as you can build.

As we do business with the traders (god-tier food for shiny things), a mook Digger suddenly gets rather shifty.

Badass cabinet. Made from wood to stick it to the elves, and decorated with some leather from that forgotten beast, among other dwarfy things.

Whoops. Looks like I forgot about the merchants for a bit too long. Fortunately, none of Peakwind's citizens were anywhere near that mess. Some merchants started killing each other, a couple others started babbling strange things, and I cycled the airlock and hastily bid the survivors farewell.

Stupid ghosts.... at least this guy doesn't cause any mayhem. The spirit in question is an old caravan guard who probably died to an ambush. Trouble is, he's not listed as a vaild subject for a memorial slab. Meaning, if I want to put his ghost down, I'll need to find his body and bury it.

Through some clever use of the "stocks" screen, you can locate individual corpses and... I won't be recovering that guy's bones any time soon. With the gravity blender unusable due to renovations, we'll just have to sit out this seige in our impenetrable fort. Oh well. :P

Nope. Still no idea what happened here. I don't think it was a vampire, since the guy's corpse would have been described as "drained of blood", and ghost shenanigans are always announced. Strange.

Apparently goblin sieges spur creativity.

Good. Artifact furniture is nice and all, but you know what I'd really like to see? Some artifact arms and armor or furniture made from gold. But your stonework is nice too.

Well, it was pretty much bound to happen. Despite my caution, a cave-in managed to happen somehow. Caiaphas and another mook miner are badly hurt, but will survive. Right after the cave-in occurred, I tried to reconstruct exactly what had happened, but I was never able to figure out exactly where the problem area was. Even so, I slow down even more, and mark excavation areas with even greater care, checking and double-checking tile connections and support.

**** just got real. A dragon has come a-knocking. I really don't want to play with her, but none of Peakwind's automated defenses will actually kill her. I hope I'm right about flying building destroyers not being smart enough to combine those skills.

This might be a good time to point out a couple of things. I mentioned at some very early point (if not on this LP), that I'm running with some modifications to dragons: they have a "classical" dragon morphology with wings and grasping claws, I made them "intelligent learners", and gave them a greater variety of eye/scale colors. Also note the dragon's procedral name: "Osna Brandflame the Spark of Heating". That's surprisingly coherent for a DF-generated name!

A human caravan shows up shortly after Osna does, and I ready some popcorn. What happens next astounds me.

Osna gets her scaly ass kicked back into the Age of Myth. At first I thought a couple crossbow troopers got lucky, but digging through the combat logs revealed the truth. A lone lashwoman. For those who aren't familiar with DF's weapon damage system, know this: blunt weapon damage is a function of "impact area", material density, and "impact speed". A whip made of silver has very small impact area (focuses force), high material density (greater base force), and a very high impact speed (light overall weapon), and naturally counts as a "blunt weapon". The thing would better be qualified as some kind of sci-fi monofilament blade. Despite wielding a NO-QUALITY silver lash, that lashwoman (whose name I forgot to note) all but soloed Osna, delivering a crippling strike with every solid hit!

Before anybody asks, I did try to recover Osna's corpse for dragon roast and dragonskin armor. Nobody tried to collect it. Sorry.

Moved by the lashwoman's display of over-the-top badassery, I decide the caravan survivors have earned the right to trade. We make what is becoming a classical exchange ("****cooking" for shiny things: gems, metal, etc), and bid farewell.

They then get jumped by a goblin ambush squad fifty yards from our front door. Trouble is, some of Peakwind's citizens were outside at the time since I figured the Dragon would have kept gobbo jackholes away. Not so! Mura in particular got hit with bad luck. He took a goblin arrow and passed out- I thought for sure he was doomed, but elsewhere in the skirmish the goblins got pwned and decided to fall back. Another dwarf dragged Mura back safely inside- this is why we wear armor, kids!

And THIS is what the miners are dealing with right now. Multiple "spires" of rock that need to be ground down to nothing, and some walls that need to be built to enclose the area. With about 5-to-6 or so z-levels left to go. This will be a tedious, nerve-shredding test of patience. Compare to, say, Minecraft where a miner could just hop onto the top of a spire and dig it all down in one pass. Dwarves lack both the intelligence and focus to work so efficiently. Ah well.

Speaking of dwarves, I finally got around to some recruitment/reincarnation requests. First, from IRC is qazwsx as a Weaponcrafter.

Hobbie's back as a child who unfortunately has no actual relation to Hobbie. So it goes.

FireSpawn has respawned as her oldest son.

redsniper also apparently never married, so I grab a random child and christen him reddersniper. Back in the game.

I do something similar with NuScourge; gotta say I was surprised at how many of the Fallen didn't actually have families!

Where is the DORF action?
Nearing critical moments / decision points on one of three career-beginning job leads, mostly. Also, I'm planning a trip to Australia to visit my parents, and I've gotten my FREDding spark back.

In short, I've been busy. Though I will admit I am flattered that people wonder where the updates are. TrashMan counts as "people", right? :P

Trust me, I haven't forgotten. I'm actually planning on slowing down updates a bit, while generally "picking at" Peakwind over time.

Ok, this might be kind of a mess. I played this session over both days of the weekend, and due to a new job, I just now got around to writing up. Oh well, hopefully I can get more coherent as I get into a more proper swing of things.

Start off by picking up on the gravity blender work. It's boring as all hell, and not at all worth documenting.
One of the soldiers crafts an artifact stone figurine of some dwarf. I'm seriously busy managing the blender project and doing so safely, so I don't pay attention to any of the details.

Hilarity with caravans. About every other caravan gets jumped by sizeable goblin killsquads. Risking the lives of our citizen-tropps for the sake of shiny trade goods is for chumps. Our airlock security system keeps Peakwind safe, at least.

At some point, CommanderDJ crafts an artifact Pig Iron battleax. Pig Iron is a merely passable weapon material, so a soldier wielding it will be banking on the weapon's quality. Also the Rule of Cool!

At another point, a dwarven diplomat drops by and makes a very interesting offer: shall Peakwind become an official Barony of its parent civilization? I say "not right now". Though of course the fact that I'm BUSY WITH DIGGING STUFF didn't influence my decision at all. No sir.

Later on, a Cyclops shows up with remarkably good timing. I have to condemn a few nameless to death to save the fort, though one armed citizen did manage to hurt the invader a bit. In a spot of good news, I finally finish off the enhancements to the gravity blender, and direct the monster to the upgraded trap.
....It didn't work as well as I had hoped. Though the trap -> fall system works just fine, the enhanced fall didn't seem to add any more damage. Frustration. I think about the matter while I manage clothing, food, and drink supplies.

Another child decides to stick it to the elves with a wooden pimpcup.

During the course of some various maintenance and cleanup, some citizens "leak" outside to track down socks or whatever. Three goblin killsquads show up sequentially to ruin their ****. Nothing I can do for them, though I do direct the goblins to the gravity blender for additional testing. As I feared, the fall STILL hadn't gained any damage. Clearly something needs to be added on.

Classical answer to everything- pour magma on it. This'll require some additional work, though. I put in orders for iron (magma-proof) screw pump components. What the components are for, you will see soon enough.

A dwarven diplomat comes again next year offering a Barony position once more. This time, I decide to say "yes". As a followup to Peakwind's new status, we need a Baron. Esarai! I choose you! This results in an acceptable division of powers: esarai had been the ruling Mayor for quite some time, but PhantomHoover just recently succeeded her (dorf-esarai's a girl, remember). Of course, esarai does fuss a bit until I carve out some "noble"-level quarters and a tomb for her and hubby, but it frankly isn't much hassle.

Right around the same time as our new Barony goes through,  I decide to unveil my latest project: a magma-fuelled enhancement to the gravity blender's floor that's driven by an affront to physics. Ref the Dwarven Water Reactor (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Water_wheel#Dwarven_Water_Reactor). This writeup is getting too long already, so I won't explain the DWR.

As I finish off the excavation for the magma spray, another dwarf gives in to old age. Scotty proves himself one of the baddest-assed, gravel-****ting survivors I've ever seen. I suppose dying of old age counts as "winning" for a dwarf. Since Scotty didn't make any funerary requests, he goes into the common burial chambers in the Hall of History. Hats off to you, Scotty.

And as my patience for this long yet uneventful session draws to a close, another child cranks out an artifact-level weapon: a warhammer made of dog bones. Well whatchu gonna do?

Actually I'm going to cut this mess short here. I'll try to put some more effort and focus into the next session. Until then, try to stay alive, yo.
