Pretty much what Zane said. The aliens go to the city to destroy all the things and you have to stop them. Terror missions have semi-unique units and rules, for example the civilians and the Demented Fuzzy Shivans (otherwise known as Reapers).

RIP Redsniper, Swantz, Jeff Vader and Polpolion o7
I could have saved all of you, alas I was back at base, repainting all the burn marks on my tank. (Karma, Boober5000, booyah!)
I do hope the techheads get me my laser cannon refit soon!

Axem being a total baller this mission.

Terror missions have important political ramifications. The aliens use them to demonstrate that the XCOM program is ineffectual and cannot protect its sponsor nations from the alien threat. This will lead sponsors to pull funding, and, in the long run, even sign pacts with the aliens.

Re: HLPX-COM: You're All Dying For Your Planet, Right Here!
wow, that's a ton of deaths, I hope x-com survives this or we are all doomed.

We already got in five replacements and they've run a mission, where three of them got kills. I'm not going to detail that one, since nobody died and nothing of interest happened aside from a Sectoid shooting at The E from two tiles away and missing him. (Fired straight into the ground instead.)

The All-Time X-COM Soldier List
The difference between a Rookie and a Squaddie is usually stated as "making a kill and surviving to get your status to change" but it's actually simply hitting a live target, making a reaction shot, making a psi attack, or taking a bravery check and keeping it under control. Basically, anything combative aside from throwing a grenade.

Making Sergeant means there are a minimum of 5 soldiers and through a rather arcane process (check here for the gory details) the game decides who has the most experience and makes them a Sergeant. We haven't got enough soldiers enlisted yet for any of the higher ranks.

Deceased
Goober5000, Sergeant (blew himself up with a heavy cannon HE round at point-blank, Mission 5)
Zacam, Rookie; made a kill but did not survive the mission (deceased by plasma rifle shot, then blown up by friendly grenade, Mission 1)
Karajorma, Rookie (deceased by plasma pistol shot, Mission 1)
Mongoose, Rookie; made two kills but did not survive the mission (deceased by plasma rifle and then heavy plasma shot, Mission 3)
Swantz, Squaddie (shot with plasma pistol, deceased by alien grenade, Mission 5)
Jeff Vader, Squaddie (deceased by alien grenade, Mission 5)
Redsniper, Rookie (deceased by alien grenade, Mission 5)
Polpolion, Squaddie (deceased by plasma pistol shot, Mission 5)

Active
Axem, Squaddie
Mjn.maxel, Squaddie
The E, Sergeant
CommanderDJ, Squaddie
SpardaSon21, Squaddie
TrashMan, Rookie
Col. Fishguts, Squaddie
Headdie, Rookie

In Transit To Base
Titan, Rookie
Jr2, Rookie

Those in transit won't be participating in the next mission unfortunately. Interceptors 1 and 2 were both launched to engage a Large UFO (by comparison we haven't encountered one yet outside the "small" category) and shot it down, though both ran out of weapons to accomplish it and Interceptor 1 sustained a hit from the alien ship's weapons, which nearly totaled the plane. We'll deal with that mission tomorrow, or maybe I'll just forget to sleep tonight.

I want an auto-cannon. With HE rounds! The aliens will pay with their blood!

Also, at this rate, we may have to consider coloning or never-before-mentioned twin brothers.

So... ehrm... is having 2/3 of the civilians saved a good or a bad thing?

for the first mission is excellent, though both civilian and X-Com survival rates will plummet once the mid tier bad guys turn up.

Sign me up as a redshirt. Hopefully my agent's stats won't be total garbage.

Picked up the collection on Steam and found I've got a ****-ton still to learn. Perhaps I'll learn a few tricks from the frontlines before getting vaporized or ripped apart.

The only way you can "learn" to play XCOM is through the same medium as the rest of us...
FAILURE

Only through failure can you truly grasp what it means to be the commander of Earth's saviours, and grasp the true level of humanities worthlessness.
Seriously, these people are supposed to be the best, yet I have a Sergeant that can't hit the broadside of a barn with an autocannon burst when only a square away!

I'm serious about that. I wanted to hit a sectoid that was hiding on the other side, and the fool just shot the floor like just slept with his mother and sister.
If you hit it and it bleeds, you can kill it. If you hit it and it doesn't bleed...You are obviously not hitting hard enough.

I think I just have some spectacularly ****ty luck. I mean I once got killed at the start of Baldur's Gate 2 by an imp, when I got nothing but critical misses and he chewed my face off.

Re: HLPX-COM: You're All Dying For Your Planet, Right Here!
Okay so.

I had a post here.

Then my computer threw up, so I'll just give you the highlights.

Cyberdisks.

Dead Cyberdisks. The E, it turns out, is a pro with a missile launcher.

Spoon being awesome and killing people through windows.

Spoon being even more awesome and killing two consecutive aliens that moved to the same spot with reaction fire, in the same turn.

For this, he's rewarded by TrashMan reactionfiring at a third alien, only Trash fires his rifle into the back of Spoon's tank. At this point it's officially suffered more damage due to friendly fire than enemy fire, though this won't last the mission.

CommanderDJ, assured by the fact nobody had fired at the tank when it moved past him, getting three plasma rounds in the face by surprise.

Spoon's tank going toe to toe with an alien and a cyberdisk for three turns, during which I saw more missed shots than one would honestly believe possible inside an enclosed space. (I counted at least twelve on their part; awkward perspective made it impossible to tell if Spoon was hitting.)

He didn't win.

Col. Fishguts actually doing well for the first six turns, including killing a cyberdisk with his rifle, until he gets hit with our first Psi attack, at which point he spends about ten turns failing his Panic check and either dropping his gun or spinning around looking for things to shoot at random (but there are no units in his LOS). He'll fail it again right after I took this shot.

The E tracks down the last alien and puts lasers into his legs and lower torso until he goes over.

The replacement laser tank is already being produced (sorry Spoon, this one will in fact be nicer I promise), with a time estimate of 3 days and 22 hours, while Titan and Jr2 have joined the squad. Rodo is currently en route to join us. Lots of people are happy with us as the month ticks over, giving us money to expand Dekker's Pad a bit more and replace our last remaining Small Radar at Area 51 with a Large system.

In conclusion, always drive Spoon.
