I think you need 7zip.
Title: Re: Problem with inferno
Post by: Dark Hunter on September 26, 2007, 08:20:49 am
WinRAR can open 7zip files.

He still needs 7Zip. It is a lot better than WinRAR or WinZIP and is open source.

Nothing, it was a launcher of some sort. It was INFR1, are you refering to something else...maybe INFA?

Yeah thats definately a failed download. Not sure why it happens though. Try deleting the file you downloaded and clearing your temporary data in windows and internet cache in whatever browser you were using. Then give it another go. But yeah if that keeps happening find another download mirror.

Create an account. I think that it would be really beneficial to have downloads.hard-light.net restored.

Don't count on it. This... 'thing', seems to protest highly against 7-Zip. Some Winzip fanatic, I guess.

EDIT: GMail Won't work, How can I make a multi-part archive in 7Zip, it won't let me.

EDIT2: How else can I send it to you. No file hosting sites allow 199 Mb files. If someone could tell me
How can I make a multi-part archive in 7Zip
it would help me and Titan.
Title: Re: Problem with inferno
Post by: Jeff Vader on October 25, 2007, 01:30:34 am
:wtf: You're quoting the post you're writing? Ok, whatever...

But, to business. If you select all the desired files, right-click and select 7-Zip -> Add to archive, you should have a multi-part archive option in the lower right corner in the window. I'll check that it is there once I get home.

Edit: Ok, checked. Here's the manual.
1. Select the desired file(s) and/or folder(s).
2. Right-click and select 7-Zip -> Add to archive.
3. On the lower right you'll see the text 'Split to volumes, bytes:' and a drop menu. Sleect the desired volume from the drop menu or type it yourself (note that the volume is measured in bytes, not kb or mb, bytes).
Click Ok.

Result: You'll have the desired file(s) and/or folder(s) in neat little packages of the desired size. The files are named according to your selected options, for example as yaddayaddayadda.7z.001 ... yaddayaddayadda.7z.009 or yaddayaddayadda.zip.001 ... yaddayaddayadda.zip.009. They'll unpack themselves, if you have them all in the same folder, where you right click the file ending in .001 and select Extract. Funky.

What have you been doing, then? I tested it by creating floppy-sized packages from fso_3_6_10_20071022 and the accompanying files and it worked like a charm.

Edit: Were we talking about INFR1? If so, I'm downloading it now and might be able to upload it to my Useful stuff site. Separately or as a set.

I have inf_release1.exe, infr1scpv10.exe, and Inferno_R1_Update.7z. I drag around them all and right click>7Zip>Add to archive. I click multipart and select 75000000 (75 Mb) and it says...Wait a sec :wtf:

Wait. I tried it now and it's working. Strange... :drevil:

Actually, it'll also work if you download them all into the same directory, then right-click the Desktop.7z.001 and select the extraction option you desire. Trust me. It'll find those other files and use them properly.

Rapidshare? Many Internet connections don't like it. I can't DL stuff from there, for example.

I already have Inferno(obviously!)but there might be someone with my same kind of connection interested on it ;)

Take "Desktop.7z.001", "Desktop.7z.002" and "Desktop.7z.003" and put them in the same folder. Right click on "Desktop.7z.001" and click 7Zip>Open Archive.

Try compressing it to a .7z file, either with the Full setting or the Ultra setting. That oughta do it.
Title: Re: Problem with inferno
Post by: Titan on November 06, 2007, 07:00:51 am
family comp doesn't have 7z. i installed it myself (shhh!) on my own, but they'd notice when they right-click stuff and see 7zip right next to winzip
Title: Re: Problem with inferno
Post by: Jeff Vader on November 06, 2007, 10:19:19 am
Then I'll repeat my advice, with the exeption that you replace .7z with zip. That might be enough and you can open it with Winzip and no one will ever know.
Title: Re: Problem with inferno
Post by: jr2 on November 06, 2007, 11:57:18 am
:wtf:  7-zip by default doesn't install the 7-zip menu or associate with files.. so just open 7-zip, find the files you want inside 7-zip, select them, and hit the "Add" button.  If you want uber compression, set the options as follows:

Archive format: 7z
Compression level: Ultra
Compression method: LZMA
Dictionary size: 128 MB
Word size: 273
Create Solid Archive: On

how about winzip? oh wait- the trial version on my laptop has expired.  :hopping: wierd part is, my family comp is trial too, but IT has had winzip for years, and it still works.

Why are your parents so scared of any software that isn't spoon-fed to them?
Title: Re: Problem with inferno
Post by: jr2 on November 07, 2007, 01:26:45 am
They should be more afraid of the software that is spoon-fed to them... IIRC, if Windows Vista doesn't get to phone home within 3 days, it goes to reduced functionality mode.  Or is that only if it thinks a hardware change was made?  Anyways, and there's Norton.... miserable piece of junk (I'm being polite).  McAffee isn't far behind.  Windows is full of holes, there's like a hundred different patches for XP now, and I'm sure Vista is quickly catching up.

Although, they are correct in being inherently suspicious of things they don't understand.  If you aren't, you're leaving yourself wide open for crap like fake Anti-Virus or Anti-Spam ads  (eg, "Your computer may be infected!!!11 Scan for free now!" - when the product is itself a Spyware).  But, if you know a bit of what you're doing, you can get along quite well.  Pretty much, advise from here is good.  Just don't do anything an0n tells you.

Title: Re: Problem with inferno
Post by: Dark Hunter on November 07, 2007, 03:48:06 pm
My guess is that they are (I'm putting this as politely as I can) not the most computer-savvy.

Or even if they are, it still makes sense. Think about it: they don't know much about us (unsure of what Titan has told them), and they see us as a potential threat. We know that none of the programs or files traded around here will do any kind of major damage, but they don't know that. They may think that one of us HLPer's would decide to hack their computer for fun or something.

Besides, I know I probably wouldn't trust a 12 year old kid (that is Titan's age, yes?) to download just anything to my computer. My parents wouldn't allow it till I was at least 16!
Title: Re: Problem with inferno
Post by: colecampbell666 on November 07, 2007, 03:50:36 pm
I figured that that was the problem, my friends parents are the same. My parents let me download whatever I want, because they know that I am responsible. I actually had to stop my mom from using LimeWire because of virus issues.
Title: Re: Problem with inferno
Post by: jr2 on November 07, 2007, 06:46:57 pm
1) Use Frostwire
2) Virus scan everything you download that isn't a .mp3 or movie file.  :p  EDIT: Ah, heck, just virus scan everything.  XD

even though my dad's job is to work with computers, he doesn't really like talking about them at home, and he can be a little..... emotional sometimes. and if i ask mom, she just says "ask dad, im busy" even if shes just standing there, doing nothing.
