Title: Why does the options menu permit humans right abuses?
Post by: General Battuta on September 28, 2010, 02:38:48 pm
Gentlemen, this is an atrocity:

Now I have it on good authority that at least one of our members is forced to play like this. And I have to ask, why does FreeSpace Open allow torture? Why are we enabling the degradation and punishment of our fellow human beings?

Texture issue, not engine. We need to remove mipmaps from the skybox textures, and the user needs to disable -mipmap.

I think he means HT's skybox mangled by FSO background detail level settings.
Notice that, despite detail level reduction, FPS still sucks.
I guess it's a good ilustration why we should optimize Karuna as fast as possible (though new Antipodes would most likely help too).

What I want to know is who did this, and what GPU is this running on?

I'm not actually requesting any changes, I just wanted to post this so people can boggle at what some folks put up with.  :(

It's MattheGeek's.

He's using an intelgrated GPU, 'nuff said.

And he doesn't turn up the settings because...?

I don't think the options menu is to blame.

Rather, it's the ****ty hardware. (and the Karuna)

So, would you actually be able to call that a sky box?

Wow, even my powerful NVidia GeForce II, 1.5GHz P4 computer makes FSO look better than that...although mine doesn't use those settings, mission, background, etc. :)

Reminds me of the loading screen of the Lost Viking minigame in SC2.

Space retro! All we need is an outline shader like the one in Borderlands!

I don't know... maybe because when I do, I drop back below 5 fps ?
And yeah this is using antipode 6. Which made be go above 5 fps for the first time on this mission in full screen.

****ing seriously.

It's preferable that the game does not boot up at all, than to actually make it through the loading screen and see that.

Uhh, Hades, I use an Intel GMA X3100 and I don't get this at all (because I conveniently forgot to turn down in-game settings because I know it made BP:AoA a living hell for me).

Learn to play at below 5 FPS until you get a better framerate then. That's what I've been doing for the past two years.

I don't know how any gamer could live with buying a machine with an integrated graphics card in the first place.  Hell, even my old puny Radeon X300 was a huge step up from that, and my sub-$100 HD4670 knocks FS2_Open out of the park.

$50: HD4650. 'Nuff said. (If there's a PCIe x16 slot)

What part of "laptop" don't you understand ?

Basically, WiH is the only thing that makes me wish I had a better graphic card. I can run all of my other games, including things like HL2 Ep2 or Halo 2 PC like a charm or close. And the 3612 MVPs run flawlessly too.

If you follow my logic, the only thing that went wrong in my world was Steve-O.

Try an ExpressCard to PCI-E adapter. Even over a PCI-E x1 link, it's far superior to IGP (but requires an external display and costs MOAR).

BTW, when was laptop mentioned prior to my comment?
