The second phase of our new forum policy is in place. As you might remember, we floated the idea of nominating a couple of forumites to be moderators back during the last forum rearrangement. Well, we finally got around to making a list and asking a few people. Here are the ones that responded. Treat them well. :)
General FreeSpace: Wanderer, Mongoose
FreeSpace Modding: Herra Tohtori, Snail
FRED: Axem, thesizzler
Missions & Campaigns: Swantz, Turey
Multi: FUBAR-BDHR, Shade
FreeSpace Support: Lobo
General Discussion: Nuke
-
Sweet! :D
-
Interesting list of names with a few surprises. :)
-
The new guard are taking over. :eek2:
-
The old guard already have positions of power or have proved why they can't handle them already. :)
-
SNAIL?
-
That's a cool list of mods, congrats! :)
-
Two down, thirty to go. :drevil:
...I'll do a good job. :p
-
SNAIL?
Glad I'm not the only one surprised.
-
SNAIL?
Glad I'm not the only one surprised.
Oh My God!
-
Now now, none of that. Snail has potential. The idea is to recognize it and give it responsibility early on, before it gets too far out of control. :)
-
Question...why FreeSpace Modding?
May I also know why thesizzler's now moderating the FRED Discussion?
-
Probably because he's not a total n00b anymore :).
-
But there are people who admirably use FRED around...why thesizzler when you have Nelson, Blaise, Darius, CP5670...?
-
why thesizzler when you have Nelson, Blaise, Darius, CP5670...?[/i][/color]
Because CP5670 is a supermod already and the HLP activity of the rest varies greatly.
-
And the others?
-

-
Hellooo? Nelson's activity varies greatly?!?
-
Yoo-hoo. He has, or at least has had, several business trips that make it difficult for him to observe forums. And isn't he already a mod on a few boards? And, as far as I understand it, the whole point of this scheme was to introduce newer members to the moderating business.
-
But Wanderer and Mongoose already are moderators. They're not newer members, either.
-
OH YEAH! Lobo ftw!!!
-

Because we said so.
-
Someone's drunk...
-
I know it's been said but. . . . Snail?!?! He's a nice guy and all that jazz. But he's about twelve isn't he? When puberty kicks in all hell is gonna break loose if he has ban-hammer priveledges. . . . You've been warned. (Nothing personal snail)
-
Snails a nice guy don't get me wrong. He also spends a lot of time on HLP. But smart ethos and tact come from life experience. I'm not saying the other candidates have any of the above but don't make rash decisions based on limited knowledge. :)
-
But Wanderer and Mongoose already are moderators. They're not newer members, either.
I'm a mod in the Voice Acting subforum, which sees about three posts a week if we're lucky. I'm just happy for the chance to spread my wings a bit. :)
...and lay down some smacketh on the masses...
-

Actually, Snail's 119 years old. No seriously, AFAIK, he's at least 17 or so. Even if he's not even, he would then be fairly mature for a prepubescent, and I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't go insane. Most people I know don't go insane during puberty. Look at me for example: Instead of being crazy, I was just innately stupid back then. :)
-
Back then? :p
Snail FTW!!!
edit: forgot to put the smiley. I don't want to be monkeyed .
-
Back then?
Yes. Now my stupidity is merely temporal, rather than innate. :p
-
When puberty kicks in all hell is gonna break loose if he has ban-hammer priveledges. . . .
You are insulting my age group. I'll see you in court.
-
I'll second that and I'll be a witness.
-
 How befitting!
-
Someone's drunk...
Yo got a problem with that? :Burp:
-
We put Snail in charge so that he can look down his nose at Mobius ;)
-
So... How exactly is someone selected to become a moderator?
-

Oi! Enough of that insulting ****, the both of yous.
Someone's drunk...
Yo got a problem with that? :Burp:
If so, then he has a problem with many of us.
So... How exactly is someone selected to become a moderator?
Be convincing.

Oi! Enough of that insulting ****, the both of yous.
YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE!
*jumps out window*

I've witnessed this on several forums now, and I was just wondering: why do threads about new moderators always turn into spam fests?
Anyways, I don't think that I'll ever become a moderator on any forums because I'm either not active or helpful enough. Or it could be because I'm an asshole, but seeing as both arguments are perfectly valid I'll probably never know...
Finally, I would like to say congrats(?) to the new moderators, and that I personally welcome our new fascist overlords.

When I got the PM I thought it was like a practical joke or something.
-
Fair play to ya if you get it. I'm off to cancel stupid drunken purchases on amazon and play that i just remembered making.
-
Gymkata? :p
-
Oh snap!!!
I'm gonna look for that lol. Gymnastic Ninja eastern european madness. . . Who comes up with this. :wakka:
Hawk the slayer still sucks though :p

Lobo said that the Admins are opening Moderation teams to new members. You're and Wanderer aren't new members, that's what I said.
-
All in all, the administrators work in mysterious ways. Just keep your pants on and don't be too concerned about it.
-
Well I wouldn't call "moderator" someone who admitted to behave like an ass**le(no offense). :P
-
Why not, I behave like an asshole every chance I get, and I've gone Global :nervous:
-
Nah, I'm refering to a different kind of ass**le.
-
All in all, the administrators work in mysterious ways. Just keep your pants on and don't be too concerned about it.
yeah, they are like God in that way.
anyway, howcome I am not a moderator ?

Dude, he's the same age as you.
SNAIL!?!

Ditto.

Lobo said that the Admins are opening Moderation teams to new members. You're and Wanderer aren't new members, that's what I said.
Read this from the last staff change, particularly the last line:
Please welcome karajorma and Tolwyn as our newest admins! Karajorma is pretty much a de facto admin around here anyway, but now it's official. :) And Tolwyn brings his vast experience as manager of the Wing Commander Saga forum, website, and development team to give a real boost to the HLP administration.
We're also experimenting with bringing on new staff, since a lot of the veteran admins are feeling the strains of burnout, and we don't want that to happen. Plus, some fresh minds will be able to inject new energy into the site and help it continue to thrive. CP5670, Flipside, Unknown Target, and Black Wolf have all agreed to be supermoderators. They'll help keep things down to a dull roar around here, and they'll also help spread out the responsibility so that it doesn't all fall on one or two people.
We may also promote a few well-deserving forumites to "standard" moderator in the near future. Stay tuned!
Apperantly, we're all well-deserving, and you're just sore about not getting to be a moderator. :p
EDIT: Seriously though, just relax. I can speak for all of the staff when I say this: We'll do a good job.
-
Note also the wording: "a few well-deserving forumites". Not "all well-deserving forumites". There are many other qualified members that we could have picked to be moderators; it was to some extent a roll of the dice. We aren't ruling out recruiting additional moderators in the future either. Let's just see how things go with this first batch.
To soothe Mobius's conscience, though, I can confidently say that I doubt we would have picked him as a moderator under any circumstances. ;)
-
SNAIL!?!
I wonder if I'll get admin powers... Actually, when. It's only a matter of time. Harhar. :drevil:

Am I considered a "well deserving forumite"?
-
I think those people are only ones that have been around HLP for years.
Another reason I'm not even thinking about ever being a moderator :P
-
Not really. I've been around longer than Lobo. I'm just curious.
-
Not really. I've been around longer than Lobo. I'm just curious.
Two months is nothing.
You see, internet time is non-linear, but highly dynamic as well. Thus, if converted to RL time, I would be here about 15 years longer than you, and you and Lobo would've been here for about 3 years.
EDIT: Someone go post in FRED discussion. Not a single post since I've taken over. :(
-
You won't like it.
-
:blah:
You fail at forethought.
-
I love saying candlejack, it's the be

Ordinarily, I wouldn't edit another person's posts like I just did so quickly, except it was clear that you didn't think before you posted. The board could only lose when a post like that was there, and while changing your post can't result in a net gain of board fidelity, no one is harmed in the changing of such a post.
Sure people have the right to post what they want to, but in this situation, I believe that even you will thank me for changing what you posted when you have time to rationally think about it.
Reflecting upon it further, I need to ask myself these questions: What could've became of that thread if I had not changed your post? What will become of the thread after I made the change?
The first is obvious. if I didn't lock it, it would degenerate into a flame war, full of spam, stupidity, and absolutely nothing meaningful. It would continue as such until a global moderator or administrator stepped in, and in such case, you probably would succeed in your attempt to have my moderator status taken away. If I had locked, leaving my semi-witty response there, both of us would be left rather sore after it, but it would be done with and behind us. I probably wouldn't lose my moderator status, and you'd probably get yelled at regardless in this thread.
The second is even more obvious, as it's actually happening. While the benefits of censoring was debatable in that brief moment in my mind, I attempted to weigh the losses. You temporarily lose your freedom of speech, which is essentially all you have here on this board, along with your reputation. But what substance of the thread is lost? The insults, the hostility? And what is gained in me changing it? Probably nothing, because I changed your post to the absolute first thing I could think of, but even then, such simple questions have often sparked excellent discussions, which would be further amplified when compared to its possible counterpart.
Both locking the thread and editing your posts both seemed like somewhat acceptable choices, probably on par with each other. But there was that slim hope of absolute redemption that comes with such questions, which is what specifically led me down my path of action.
All in all, I think I've justified my choice of action.
-
Dude, I wasn't trying to get you banned.
-
Dude, I wasn't trying to get you banned.
Whether or not you were played no role in my immediate thought after seeing your post. I didn't even think about that after words, much less include it in my previous post.
EDIT: Regardless, editing other people's posts is a very serious matter; not something that can be done lightly. Censorship, for the most part, is the scourge of the internet, which is why I felt I needed to justify my action. Whether my justification is satisfactory, not necessarily my thought process, but the actual content and benefits and risks of the situation.
-
:wtf:
Somebody mind explaining what just happened, or is it too private too discuss publicly or something???
-
Yeah, what's going on? Is there something about being a moderator I don't understand right now?
-
If you go read from here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,53741.msg1087212.html#msg1087212) down, you'll be able to get the gist of it. If anyone told you anything more, my entire course of action would be undermined.
-
So he posted something stupid and you edited his post? What's the big deal? It's not like he's trying to make the admins revoke your moderator powers or anything... Is he?
Ehh, I'll try to stay out of this argument. Does anyone notice how practically all Announcement threads end up locked?
-
I posted in FRED Disc, and sizzle thought that since the title was "Terrorism" that I was trying to bring down his command. (or something)
-
Not really. I've been around longer than Lobo. I'm just curious.
I have been here longer then you and sizz.

This kind of reminds me of the time that Admin actually dared to put the links to the forums in different places to where they used to be.
There was much wailing and pulling of beards....

Not saying any names...
*coughGoobercough*
That is, if you mean the april fools joke :nervous:
-
Nope, I was referring to when we moved the link to the General Discussion to the bottom of the list instead of at the top.
That Drama that ensued was partly hilarious, partly appalling to be honest.
-
Not really. I've been around longer than Lobo. I'm just curious.
Lobo has taken on a very significant portion of my old job of dealing with tech help requests. The tradition here on HLP is that those who take on responsibility without being asked are given more. :p
It's not the time he's been here so much as what he's done with it.
-
Why, thank you. It just feels natural for me, what with being the tech support dude for the family and acquaintances. Especially since as a non-creative person I don't really shine at modelling, FREDding or that sort of stuff. I just see tech support as the way I can try to contribute to the community.
-
I think Snail has matured a lot in the last year (judging from his post anyway) Give him a chance and we will see how he performs.
-
I think Snail has matured a lot in the last year (judging from his post anyway) Give him a chance and we will see how he performs.
Not really. On GW you can see a lot of Snail induced madness.
-
Not to mention that he is one of the most prolific Sectorgame chat-box spammers :p
-
But you can't say I'm worse than that StRiD@R idiot.
-
That's why I said 'one of' ;)
Edit: Besides, it's not that big a deal in a Chat box
-
Well one of two, really.
-
I think Snail should moderate General FreeSpace Discussion and not FreeSpace Modding.
-
It just surprises me that so many people are up in arms about Snail having 'teh powah'.
To be honest with you all, if I got it into my head to lock every thread in a Forum, do you think Admin would respond with 'Oh well, bad luck.'?
Moderators do have their own rules to abide by, it doesn't give us Carte Blanche to do as we see fit, we are mostly just there to be a first line of defence against really obvious problems, like arguments or 'Buy Viagra Here!' type posts. We can lock, move, split, edit or delete posts, and any one of those done without cause will cause a response, so we are naturally wary of doing so unless we consider it really necessary.
Believe me, if I locked everything I deemed as pointless, then I wouldn't be a moderator for long. Give Snail time and see what sort of a Moderator he is before passing judgement ;)
-
It just surprises me that so many people are up in arms about Snail having 'teh powah'.
I believe that this can be summed up with two words: "penis envy"...
-
I don't think that it's a bad idea, just a bit... Odd.
-
I don't think that it's a bad idea, just a bit... Odd.
Odd in a good or bad way? Or both (being odd)?
-
It was just a surprise.
-
I can assure you I was more surprised than you are/were.
-
Why, thank you. It just feels natural for me, what with being the tech support dude for the family and acquaintances. Especially since as a non-creative person I don't really shine at modelling, FREDding or that sort of stuff.
Same here. Except I don't know anything about the SCP other then how to set it up. (hell, I honestly don't even know what HEAD or a trunk build is)
-
Not really. I've been around longer than Lobo. I'm just curious.
I have been here longer then you and sizz.
As a lurker, maybe. I registered in mid 2005 with almost no lurking, and according to your profile you registered in early 2007. ;)
-
My first move - Unstickied Hades Combine thread. Start the controversy.
-

HEAD = bleeding edge. Untested features with plenty of bugs.
Trunk = Not as bleeding edge, features that have been accepted into the codebase for FSO.
-
HEAD = bleeding edge. Untested features with plenty of bugs.
Trunk = Not as bleeding edge, features that have been accepted into the codebase for FSO.
BZZZT! Wrong.
-
Then what's the right answer?
-
HEAD is like the bleeding edge build, but features that haven't been accepted into the codebase. It's for devs only, and basically for bugtesting purposes and for other devs to share ideas etc.
Am I right this time?
-
Trunk is the stable branch, and is what all SCP releases are built from.
There are many unstable branches. When a feature within an unstable branch is accepted, it gets merged into Trunk.
HEAD is the most recent version of any branch, whether stable or unstable.
-
Lol, I'll admit it, I too was surprised at Snail making moderator.
But FreeSpace Modding... okay that one to me... somewhat expected (actually it just makes me recall that screenie of a particular Fenris whacking a particular jugg so badly that the FPS dropped to nearly zero :nervous:).
:)
-
uh... so apparently I'm a mod for the FS Upgrade forum and nobody told me. :nervous:
Even more disturbing is I'm a mod for the FS upgrade internal... which I only got permission to access last week.
How strange. It's like opening your underwear drawer one morning and finding a gift-wrapped handgun in it.
-

I would have described it differently...but that would require much explanation and I don't think I'd be allowed to use the offsite links that would make it clear.
-
Added Shade and Nuke, who were a little tardy in responding. :)
-
Nuke?
What kinda universe have I just jumped into? and why am I not a mod yet :hopping: :p?
-
What kinda universe have I just jumped into? and why am I not a mod yet :hopping: :p?
For reasons hitherto unknown.
-
Congrats to the new mods (especially you Snail!). May your corruption begin into an eventual slide of self destruction... ;7 (the King is dead, long live the King!)
IDK where all the anti-Snail stuff is coming from (aside from the fact that Nuke, Snail, and like one other practically own the GW shout box as if it was a thread... )
I could have done the job at age 10-11 so a 12yo isn't bad, long as he doesn't screw up (too badly). ;)
@Top Gun, there was probably some complicated ritual involved including: Animal Sacrifice, Astrological Consultation, Username Numerology, and random number generation of currently active and non-banned members.
But then again, that's just a guess... I wouldn't take it personal unless they came right out and said something to the effect of : "Cause we don't like you". That might get me to thinking though... :nervous:
-
If that wasn't a joke, Snail's 17. The youngest on there is sizzles, at 15.
-

hey your right, that explains things.
heh, but I was around since mv_special_effects
Top that!
-
If that wasn't a joke, Snail's 17. The youngest on there is sizzles, at 15.
Last time I checked, I'm 16. BTW, I never thanked Mobius for that HB PM. Thanks! ;)
-
I'm archaic!
I registered before the fall of squadwar :p but if i was a mod :shudder:

Well your birthday wasn't long ago. And you were 15 when you became a mod.
I'm archaic!
I registered before the fall of squadwar :p but if i was a mod :shudder:
Nuke is a mod. How bad could you be?
-
I'm more of a background participant. Plus i'd never interject and let you guys eventually burn the place down. at least i'm honest .. .. . . . Also i'd use mod influence to make pirate day a weekly thing.
-
And you were 15 when you became a mod.
I'm afraid you're wrong again. :/
My birthday is on the 18th of April, yet I was made a mod on May 2nd.
Honest mistake, though. :p
-
Crap. Now I actually have to read the Missions and Campaigns forum.
-
Can I be a mod?
Oh Yeah and BlackDove too - just to see what happens ;7
-
Can I be a mod?
Oh Yeah and an0n too - just to see what happens ;7
f!x0r3d.
-
Didn't an0n get admin status once? As an April Fool's prank or something?
-
No, he hacked HLP.
-
It would be funny to give an0n admin privileges as an April Fool's prank ... just to see what happened. What wouldn't be funny is cleaning up the mess he would make afterward...
-
Just make a backup.
-
It would be funny to give an0n admin privileges as an April Fool's prank ... just to see what happened. What wouldn't be funny is cleaning up the mess he would make afterward...
That is like the 7000th time someone has said that. Please stop. Everyone.
-
No, he hacked HLP.
He didn't.
-
Yeah, he gained access to a bunch of internals. Straight from the Goober's mouth. (I think)
And then there was Mr. Vasudan...
-
IIRC Goob messed up the permissions and an0n mirrored 5 pages of admin internals somewhere...
-
And then there was Mr. Vasudan...
Vasudan Commander?
-
No, it was some hacker who somehow got admin powers. The most recent april fool's someone got his name and wondered who they were.
-
when was this?
-
A long time ago.
-
just think of the corrupt monkeying BlackDove would do :nervous:
and the "Experiments"
-
Dun eva hit me admi rowers i'll be bad.
-
How long have you been drunk?
-
Ahhh crud.
Sorry >again<
-
Dun eva hit me admi rowers i'll be bad.
 I think he just asked the admins not to hit him.
-
Actually it says not to give me admin powers.
What the Heck was i doing that bladdered. :(
-
You have a long way to go to reach DG posting
-
Or BlackWolf.
-
Diamond still checks his profile e-mail address. I may well tell him about HLP London 2. :) check my sig for DG's finest moment :)
-
Lol. I know. But BW's finest moment was still infinitely more awesome.
-
the Humnyurger post?
-
Yup.
-
modifying text accordingly :nervous:
