Anyone have any old games that they still sometimes play (or wish you could play) for nostalgia? For me, I've got titles like MotoRacer, SODA Off-Road Racing, and the old Need For Speed games, which won't run on my computer anymore. I also seem to recall some game from my childhood (which I can't pin a name on) involving a spaceship-thing flying around a landscape with weird tunnels through hills and such, some with force fields. I think there was also a purple boss that quacked.
Anyone else care to share their nostalgia? (BTW, Volition/Parallax titles don't count, as we should all already be familiar with them.)

Grim Fandango. I'd want to play Grim Fandango. Can't get it to work on my current rig. Unless... maybe I should try to install it on my netbook. Would have to iso the cds.

Kind of scary when I look at the backlog sitting on the shelves and in the attic. I'll mention some that are close to hand.
Space Hulk (the first one) is still on my shelf and works through DOSBox, got it free with another game on a budget label deal. I have the second one somewhere too, I managed to run it on XP using some DirectX config tinkering, but I'm not so sure if it still works.
Recently got the Unreal Gold bundle (I'm not usually an FPS person, I just remember playing a demo of UT when I was younger and I thought it was quite fun), and a compilation of the Myst series that I can't get to run. :/
Occasionally dig out Mechwarrior 2 (including MW2: Mercenaries) and Crimson Skies, and have numerous old flight sims from the late '90s that I might pick up again (Flight Unlimited series in particular). Would love to get Air Power working.
Also I have been giving the Echelon series (futuristic flight sims) a try. They aren't totally bad games, they certainly have some flaws but I can put up with them. Descent players might find them of interest although they are in some ways different from that series.
Dune (the adventure/strategy game by Cryo), which is DOSBox compatible. It's a nice game, and it's about 20 years old now. Probably one of the first games to feature full speech and to be released on CD-ROM.
StarCraft, Starlancer and Alpha Centauri probably need to be played again as I never actually finished them. Ah, all the Homeworlds too.
I too am thinking that Terminal Velocity is the game that the OP is trying to remember.

I actually managed to scoop up Wing Commander 3 and 4 on the flea market in Belgium a year or so back. Best purchase I ever made.
The WC3 thing comes with all the manuals, too :D.

I personally loved the FIRST Wing Commander game. Loved how you really felt like 'its my fault' when your wingman died.
ANd that game was released 3 years before my birth 0_o.

When you say it like that, it makes it sound almost as repetitive as 'build - attack - rebuild' :lol:

Actually one of my favorite things about GC2 was how glitchy the AI was. Sometimes twenty enemy tanks would get a move order to the same point, and they'd all pinwheel into a beautiful flower shape around it, and you would artillery them to ****. Or the AI would get into this weird rut of just building the same unit over and over. But you could un-rut it by saving and loading and suddenly it would do some wildly unpredictable (usually stupid) thing.
World in Conflict was cool too but never really had the same magic. Decent writing though.

But there is also a bunch of other old games which I first played only recently but also found them great (so I don't actually have any kind of nostalgia about them but I would like to replay them anyway): System Shock 2, Diablo 2, Unreal, Freelancer, Team Fortress Classic, X2: The Threat, Halo: Combat Evolved.
Also, which games are actually considired as "old"? Because all games released after 2003 are "new" for me, so I don't mention them.

The game is the predecessor of Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain and remains a very impressive technical achievement. That game is among the first and foremost of everyone mentioned in this thread that have had a impressive impact on me, so to me deserves a special mention.

Mainly been playing Xcom: Terror from the Deep lately after digging the DOS CDs out of the loft a few weeks ago, also got UFO to get back into. Other than that I'm playing C&C or Syndicate Wars occasionally and I'm stuck on one of the later missions because I don't have trigger wire (when at this stage I did have it on the PSX version). Very rarely I sometimes drag my Atari ST out to play Carrier Command mainly because it has better sound than the PC versions I've tried, attacking the enemy carrier never gets old. :D

Wing Commander (the whole series), Descent (same), Commanche 4, X-Wing: Alliance, Dune 2000 and first C&C games (the ones which I could get for free some time ago).
Though if you mean really recently, then only C&C and XW:A (I don't have much time for playing anyway).

I wish I could play Comanche Gold (Doesn't work on Win7/Vista) and Falcon 4.0 (lost).

Sands of Time was phenomenal, EXCEPT for the asstastic combat. It was obviously designed for a console... and since I played it on PC, I hated it. And the comabt wouldn't have been nearly as bad except for the lack of a quicksave and the forced checkpoint bull****. I was enamored enough with the plot that I finally just downloaded the save checkpoints for the areas that I went through 50+ times and couldn't beat so I could find out the rest of the story.
The irony was that the final boss was much easier than a number of the earlier battles. Go figure.

I think Tycho from Penny-Arcade put it best when he said that the combat segments in Sands of Time were things you tolerated in order to get to more of the glorious platforming, instead of the other way around. I know it certainly frustrated me at a few points (oh lord, that elevator...I'm guessing that's where you got stuck?), but I usually managed to plow through it. Maybe the difference was that I originally played it on the PS2, so when I played it on the PC later via GameTap, I just hooked up my PS2 controller and used the same config.
As far as the final boss goes, again paraphrasing from Tycho, I don't think one should treat that encounter as the final boss...it was that ridiculously-tall tower you had to scale without using rewind beforehand. :D

-FreeSpace (obviously :P)
-Unreal 1 (new impressives textures, new patches)
-The Homeworld Serie (tactical mods and new maps)
...But I also like to play with consoles I didn't play with when they were initially released, like the NES, SNES, Saturn... Even if some games looks... strange on an HDTV, 2D games like Donkey Kong Country are surprisingly nice to see, more than many 3D PSONE games :ick:

Every once in a while I'll fire up Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday. Very reminiscent of the old D&D Gold Box games, except with sci-fi. Way ahead of it's time though - you could get into random battles in space, blow all the weapons off a heavy cruiser, then take your little squad and board. After that, all the payoff was creds only good for ship repairs and fuel, plus anything you could loot of the corpses. Still haven't seen another game that lets you do that though.

Populous: The Beginning. I still play it from time to time.
The game itself is rather easy, but still fun; you get to build up your tribe, increasing your Shaman (main unit)'s mana, enabling her to cast deadlier, more complex spells, the most lethal being the Volcano (note: The pic below comes from the Internet):

Usually, I just wait 'till my Brave population goes to 199 (the max pop), so the Shaman gets uber-strong, with most spells recharging quickly, and then solo the enemy with JUST the Shaman, wreaking havoc by casting a plethora of destructive spells (oh and primitive as they are, Shaman on a Balloon is just badass :lol:):

Oh, and just a sidenote, it's slightly surprising that VERY FEW here play the PC game called "Pirates of the Caribbean", since only one replied to its thread. That sure is an old, abandoned game :(.
But fortunately, there's a modding site dedicated to it.
