Title: FSPort not Playing Well with FS2 Graphics
Post by: shuuki on October 17, 2007, 10:10:46 pm
Not quite sure how to explain this problem or how to search if anyone else has had the same thing happen to them.

I installed FS2 retail from my old discs, and used the Installer to install all the latest goodies. I played the FS2 campaign for a while with everything cranked up to maximum, and it was beautiful. Then I got tired of FS2 and switched over to the FSPort. After I figured out I was being an idiot and not switching campaigns, everything was again looking great. Now here comes the problem. I did my FS thing, and I decided it was time to go back to FS2. I disabled the mod, applied the change, checked graphical settings, and relaunched. Suddenly FS2 is playing with original graphics. The add-ons that I have enabled seem to still be working (like render 3D ships in weapon selection and the new orb radar), but the graphics themselves have reverted to non specular low res stuff. I've redone the launcher, turned everything off and on again, restarted computer, made sure no files had somehow drifted into the wrong folder (which seems unlikely given that I was using the installer rather than doing anything manually [and I'm sure I wouldn't necessarily recognize any errant files unless they were blatantly out of place]), but somehow I just cannot get the bloody FS2 enhanced graphics to return. When I reenable the mod and go back to FS1, all the bells and whistles suddenly work again. If I run the FS2 campaign with the mod enabled, the game is admittedly broken, but again, it once again has the pretties.

What have I done and what can I do to fix it?

Do you have MediaVPs still selected in the launcher under the MOD tab?

FSPort automatically calls to run the mediavps. If you selecet NO MOD and run, you will only get retail.

Also, change pilots or restart the FS2 campaign.

Got it, thanks. Figured it'd be something simple that I'd overlooked. I have a dedicated pilot for each FS campaign, but I hadn't caught that I needed the mediavps folder as the new mod to select in the launcher. All good now, sorry to trouble you. :)

Hey, you live and you learn. As a side note, if you took a look in the mod.ini file in your FSPort folder, you'd see that it refers to the mediavps folder in order to use all the new shiny things.

In any case,

Older versions of the launcher used to allow you to have a mod.ini file in the root folder. That meant I could add a large warning that it was in retail mode like that and non of the SCP graphics would work.

I'll have to have a look through the code and see when and why this was removed cause it was actually quite useful.
