I'm really slow to pick op on some. Still havn't finished Gintama (at episode 220 now), and am thinking of watching Zhipang  a japanese AEGIS destroyer that goes back in WW2 time) and  Jormangund. About gun dealers and mercenaries...like Black Lagoon, but less over-the-top

Yes. Except the US carrier returned home before impacting history in any significant way. In this anime there is no going back home, and the destroyer is going to have to pick a side...

just watched Escaflowne: The Movie. Wasn't great, but I want to see the series so that I can get the full experience...Is what I'd like to say, as long as Hitomi doesnt have the same borked face proportions as in the film.

The movie is inferior in almost every way to the original series...honestly the main things going for it are the cinematic budget and more Yoko Kanno soundtrack goodness.  The character designs in the series have something of a distinctive look (pointy noses!), but I think they're fairly reasonable.
