Now, after we moved to HLP it is a good time to throw some new eyecandy to you guys. Enjoy! (and feel free to comment ;) )

:eek2:
Gimme dat shockwave nao!
Who created those nebulas?
-
Ah, sorry for the compression ;)
@T-LoW Say thank you to "watsisname" our great background artist who creates those great nebulas which enhence the atmosphere and darkness of space :pimp:
-
I demand you retexture the Raynor and Titan so they don't look like the obvious Blue Planet ripoffs they are!
(srsly guys, I tend to think you just absorb assets because they look cool rather than "is this of use to what we want to build")
-

No, for serious, don't get started on those textures. We've had a hundred texture schemes for those already, this really is the better-looking one.
-
Those backgrounds are eye-meltingly awesome.
-
Yes they are. Watisname should recreate FS backgrounds for mediavps as well. :)
-
RECRUIT HIM NAO
-

Surely after release of Act I (which is very soon hopefully :) ) you will get 'em for mediavps.

It's not looking very soon and if the next MediaVPs roll around first those nebula should go into them.
-
You do mean as an addendum to the LS nebs right, not a replacement?
-
I think that would probably be good. I'm not sure these are necessarily drop-in replacements.
-
Yeah, definitely not - a lot of my BGs are designed to meld different shapes together neatly - I'm sure a lot of people do that. As nice as these nebs are, dropping them in 1 for 1 to existing missions would make a lot of backgrounds noticeably less pretty.
-
As is the case with effects and maps that are eventually replaced, background bitmaps shouldn't be an exception. As long as mediavps missions are updated, I see no problem with drop-in replacement. I'm sure there can be some sort of vp-file for deprecated mediavps assets for missions/mods that depend on mediavps and the current background bitmaps.
-
But effects and maps aren't individually applied...
No, wrong thread for this, and wrong forum. The screenies are awesome guys, I see lots to like. Been looking forward to ED for awhile, and now even more so :)
-
There are a lot of fantastic assets. The hard work is going to be pulling a campaign together around them. The story is actually firmed up pretty well and some semidecent missions have come together, and the new FREDders are a godsend.
-
Would sure as hell hope we don't take that long to release Act 1. But yeah, if the next MVP's are set to come out before our release, then why not.

Did you at least keep them? It'd be kinda nice to have a stock of existing retextures.
-
No, but I can recreate them and make a lot of new ones. I like that :).
-
These are the most rich images I have ever seen in a freespace mod (and that's saying a lot). I've found a new desktop background if that's ok.
I'll be paying attention to ED.
-
That shockwave. There are not words to express the awesome.
-
after re-balancing the colours and contrast that is now my wall paper
-
The shockwaves are epic, and I love the backgrounds. I think the Titan's textures are nice; they don't seem as shiny as in Blue Planet. It was cool in BP, but this is different... and definitely cool. Unforunately, the Raynor shot is too dark to give a verdict.
Hopefully we don't have to wait too long to see your first release, this is really looking awesome. Keep up the good work!
-
(srsly guys, I tend to think you just absorb assets because they look cool rather than "is this of use to what we want to build")
if you didn't notice yet, we tend to build our assets from the ground up most of the time :D
I won't deny that we have a few similarities with BP, but most are gameplay related, stuff like Fury AI, tough and respectable capships...
our modpack is finished for act 1, we have some really good stuff in it, and now we moved on to finishing up the missions, testing and balancing, so get used to these Titan and Raynor skins, as they are here to stay :P
-
Allright. After a good start it might be worth continue the eyecandyness :D

Awesome planet is awesome.
-
It is indeed. (So awesome it's overshadowing the ships, especially with those lighting settings so you can't see them too well!)
-
my planet :)
-
Epic screenies, but.......two wierd things I see going on here :wtf:
In screenshot 2, are those beam cannon turrets floating in mid-air?
In screenshot 3, the warps look fairly like the one I made for ASW. Where'd they come from?
-
what floating beam cannons? I don't see it...
the warps were modified from the mediavps version(I did it), it was meant to resemble the old blue water ones, while still retaining the high quality look and feel of the mediavps version.
anybody who wants these feel free to ask
-
That an urban planet?
And why the different shockwave in pic 4?
-
In screenshot 2, are those beam cannon turrets floating in mid-air?
No, they just like to have their lighting settings at "too dark to see any damn thing, thus ruining all the work the modelers put into this stuff."
-
their lighting settings at "too dark to see any damn thing[...]"
Haters gotta hate.

To be fair how can we appreciate the team's work if we cant see it?
-
Honestly if all we get is lip all the goddamn time, I honestly don't see why we should even try.
-
Snail, disassociate whatever ****'s happening in your personal life from the project, then reapproach the project. No disrespect intended. kthxbai.
-
there is a time and a place for dark screenies as with anything else. The shot of the Deimos getting torped is a good example of when it should be done because the contrast between the dark image and the bright shockwave draws your attention to it and the excelent work done there. in contrast, shot 2 of the most recent screenies I can only see that the ship at the side firing the anti fighter beams is a Hecate (on my CRT with the contrast and brightness set as high as it will go) because it is dark outside, during the day i can only tell a ship is there because of the light clusters and engine glows
-
CRT monitors can be quite lacking in terms of brightness, I can see everything there just fine.

It's not that they can be, it's that those of us with them choose to set the brightness to a low rate by default, so we're not doing the equivalent of staring into a spotlight all day. :p

I have an LCD. I can see everything, provided I spend a few seconds figured out what they are from the bare outlines.
Seriously guys, if you ever want to show off new color schemes or models, turn your lighting settings up.
-
Ah ha, well that explains it all. Cheers on clearing that stuff up! Almost gave me a shock :p
-
Those screenshots are quite beautiful it must be said; shows how far FSOpen has come in the past few years! Totally mezmerised by that planet texture!
I actually love having strong light/dark contrast like that; it can make things hard to make out sometimes, but for me it makes things feel more gritty and real (even though i imagine real space isn't actually that dark, so you could call it 'over-realistic' i suppose), and there's always the techroom to admire the ships; in mission your usually too busy dodging and shooting stuff to go sightseeing.
-
I think I found enough desktop background images to keep me happy for a few months. :D
-
It's nice to hear that, Sifle :)
-
nice pics there.

Please give us more screenies! ;)

That would be against everything anyone who's commented on "what we want to see" has said.

Noted Mobius. Hell, ill see if anyone objects to showing off one of the concept arts we worked/are working on..

But this thread has to be used for something.

just to show some of the stuff I'm working on ATM, can be seen also in this thread:

Love the engine flare effects on that last pic, and the orange trails are awesome. Beautiful work Nighteyes, keep it up!

Yeah!
