Title: Weird FreeSpace2 installation problems
Post by: MoodyB on April 05, 2002, 07:55:08 am
Hey all,

I apologise in advance for my first post being so long....

I'm hoping that somebody can offer some help on the above subject,it's driving me nuts.

My config :

Celeron 433 / Win98(build 4.10) / 192mb / GeForce256 /
Detonator v28.32 / DirectX v8.1(tried with v7 as well) /
Desktop at 1024x768x16 / FreeSpace v1.20 / 32x Teac CD-Rom

First of all,after doing an install of FreeSpace2,should the folders
inside the data/ directory be empty?Mine are here.I have a lot of .vp files the the root directory though.And sometimes
the installation will crash at the end with the percentage at 99.
I have un-installed / re-installed FreeSpace about 8 times now picking different variations on the selection,and changing the path to where its put with no success.

Here's a rundown of what happens.

I open the Launcher and select the D3D 640x480x16 screen and click play.I get the following error dialogue on the desktop after about 15 seconds :

Error: Could not load animation cursor for the mouse pointer

File:C:\projects\freespace2\code\FREESPACE2\FreeSpace.cpp
Line: 7086

Call stack:

If I click debug,then I get the following messages until it quits itself:

Error: Too many fonts!
See John, or change MAX_FONTS in Graphics\Font.h

File:C:\projects\freespace2\code\Graphics\Font.cpp
Line: 753

Call stack:

Error: Could not load in Pop3!
File:C:\projects\freespace2\code\UI\WINDOW.cpp
Line: 232

Call stack:

    KERNEL32.DLL bff8b537()
    KERNEL32.DLL bff8b3e9()
    KERNEL32.DLL bff89dac()

And then the screen goes black for about 2 seconds,then I'm returned to my desktop.

If anybody can offer any advice,I would really appreciate it.

hmm....odd.  Never happened to me.

what are your install options?

Is the CD damaged or scracthed atall?

BTw, the data directory should be empty - only a bunch of empty folders - the actual information is help on the VP files.

Well I'm your angel then. Yes the folders are empty.
Hmm, I helped a guy out of trouble like this in VBB a year ago. I'm not sure about the kernell errors (I hate those) but the poor guy just deleted some fonts and I send him the cursor files (now he can play FS)  :p
Keep your head and welcome to HLP man :D

I've used all the different install options.Tried just basic,basic and music,all ticked,etc....

The cd's are fine.

What resolution is FS2 running at? I knew a guy who had some call-stack problems too, running at a different resolution fixed it for him.

And again, is your CD not scratched???

And, since anyone hasn't said that:

;7 ;7 ;7 WELCOME TO HLPBB ;7 ;7 ;7

I'll leave the shotgun routine to someone else, I'm kinda busy here. :D

Thanks for the welcome:)

I've tried FreeSpace at both 640x480 and 1024x768(with hires
installed from cd).Neither makes a difference.

Here's a couple of things I fogot to post earlier:-/

This sometimes appears during installation.Around 40-55%

00328B9D caused an invalid page fault in
module ZDATAI51.DLL

And when I pick my destination for where FreeSpace2 is installed,
Setup show that I have around 300mb of space,when I really have 3.9gig!If I try and install FreeSpace2 and it crashes during this,and I run setup.exe again,this time it shows the correct amount of space....

I'm looking at a re-format aren't I....:-(

Well, I'm sure someone smarter than me can come up with someting better, but I'd say you're looking at a bad disk/file here.
