Encryption is the blanket term for various technical means by which a message can be secured, so that its contents can only be known by people with the permission to know them. It is usually deployed alongside additional technical security measures, such as narrow-band point-to-point transmissions and dead drops.

Several kinds of physical encryption have been available since the widespread use of datacrystals began. Datacrystals can be encoded on a molecular level to only be accessible with the correct reading device.
The use of datacrystals, especially crystals that render themselves inert after use, also has inspired a rise in the use of Steganography in place of encryption.

Dekker's avatar suffocated horrifically after the airlocks to the command module opened and the station gradually achieved thermal equilibrium with the planet outside and exchanged the breathable atmosphere within with the much thinner and very much less breathable atmosphere from the outside.

When the Cedar Forest fails to contact anyone in the station as it arrives for its scheduled supply drop, it informs IPX Headquarters on Earth. Soon after another ship arrives to investigate, they find the station in as is, and clean it up and install another oblivious soul as human back-up.

Dekker is now ineligible to issue further commands until Turn 60 (plus/minus 4 turns).
