Thank you for that enlightening axiom. I know. I meant that I do not know the exact file names of the Mac files and therefore couldn't offer my assistance in removing them, if necessary.

I think a new installer should be made (if you can) with bug free fixes and when the final 3.6.10 MediaVPS is released to ease the new players....

The Installer works. It is up to the user to know what OS he/she has and so on. And onc ethe new MediaVPs are ready, they'll be included in the download options of the Installer.

Hey folks, I'm having a slight problem here.  I've recently installed Freespacee SCP on my laptop running ubuntu 7.10.  The game works fine, but when I try to use the mediavps, some hi-def models work some don't.  For instance, on the first mission, "Surrender, Belisaurius!" the models of the Myrmidons, Serapis, and Isis transports work.  The Herc MkIs work but only at about 600m--prior to that they're blank and all I can see is an engine signature and nothing shows up in the target view (lower left box).  Also, the Psamtik is not a hi-def model, it's the standard one, but the beam it fires is the redone beam for the SCP.  Any ideas on that one?  It's not a serious problem, but I'm curious.

Assuming that you're using the 3.6.9 build, you'll need to add the -jpgtga flag to the command line.

Hey guys, it's me having a headache after totally failing to run the game...need your guy's help!

So I downloaded the game with the Freespace Open Installer and now what? Everytime I click on the launcher and then "Run", the intro appears and then the game interface, which tells me that I should pick a player. Since I just downloaded it, I have to create a new one, right? But everytime I try so, a warning pops up "Failed to save pilot file. You may be out of disk space" , which I am certainly NOT.

This is starting to give me a major pain in the ass, sooooo eager to play this

EDIT: Figured out how to change from Multiplayer to Singleplayer...now I actually CAN create a new player, but when I click on "select", the monitor freezes...Is it possible to play FS2 on Vista? And yes, I am a total noob:)

Hmm. Can you provide some more system specs? Also, where did you install FSO? My Documents and the desktop are a no-no and will cause issues, such as the inability to properly save pilot files.

K. In theory you are more than capable to run FSO, so this must be a Vista issue. Many people have played and are even now playing FSO on a Vista machine, but (un)fortunately I'm not one of them. Check back later to see if someone with more Vista experiences has come up with some ideas.

Because it works that way. You just have to get the necessary files on a computer and after that, I believe it is the Launcher that generates the necessary registry entries when it is run for the first time. And thanks to this feature, you can easily share this marvelous game with your friends. Just copy your \freespace2\ folder on a DVD, USB stick or an external HDD, take it to another computer and copy there. It's easy and saves a lot of Turey's bandwidth if people can copy the game this way, instead of everyone downloading it with the Installer.

Lobo, thanks for the help, that did the trick.

However, I'm a new, more-serious, issue.  I'm running freespace 2 with mods and the mods keep crashing a few missions into them (it's happened with homesick and blueplanet) when I click the the "continue" button.  On both missions it happened on a "red-alert" mission (with no briefing or ability to select ships, weapons, etc).  The error I get is this "segmentation fault (core dumped)."  I could really use some help on this one.....

Sounds like the evil red-alert bug. It can sometimes occur, and it is very much confined to 3.6.9. fs2_open_20071028 might do the trick.

As for Homesick, the whole thing is a pain in the arse because of those bugs. Though I haven't tested it with a 3.6.10 build yet.

Not to sound like a total idiot, but...uh...what do I do with that lol?  I looks like an executable, so I placed it in my main FS2 directory and opened it in a terminal, now the entire whole game crashes and gives me a segmentation error.

There was a Linux option in there as well, but I was hoping you'd know what to do with it, since Linux is still quite unfamiliar to me.

Unfortunately, it's pretty new to me as well.  Anyway, it is an executable and I can get it running, but I'm having the same problem, the mod crashes on the red-alert mission.

Well there is a bug called the Red-Alert bug which causes unpredictable behavior on Red-Alert missions. Not much you can do.

So...there's no way to fix this?  Freespace runs fine on my 5 year old desktop, but not on my new laptop?  That doesn't seem right lol.  The only way in which my desktop might be superior is in the graphics card--it has an Nvidia card while my laptop has an ATI.  Could that be the source of the problem?

No, the bug is in the .EXE itself. It can't be fixed on your end, unless you repaired the code. Try a different build, like one of the ones in my signature.
