There are several ways.

The only important things you need from the retail disks are the VP files, and you can:

-run the installer via Wine

-run the installer on a Windows computer, copy VP files from game root directory to an USB stick or other portable medium, then paste them on your computer into your intended FS2 directory (something like /games/FreeSpace2/ could work well). Personally I run the game from the same directory as on Windows when I boot to Linux, so I have never had to install the game on Linux.

-extract the files from the CAB files on the CD's. There have been disks around that simply won't spit their contents out via standard cabinet file uncompressing utilities, so the two earlier possibilities may be your only way.

Psst. Since this is on the Inferno board, I think he meant Inferno R1 or whatever it was called. Or Inferno Alliance. Which are both distributed as .exe files, unfortunately.

Indeed, I think he meant INFR1 or INFA.

Yes. If you have a Windows computer available, you can "install" Inferno there; the installer will just place the vp file(s) to <target folder>\inferno\ if I recall correctly. After that, you can just copy them over to Linux and do the usual cross-platform mod installation procedure.

Well now I feel dumb.

To my defense, I was posting from my phone so I simply didn't take note of the forum the thread was in until you pointed it to me.
