Windmills.

That is all.

Boystrous 19 year old temp at work slapped me in the face with an envelope and laughed it off as playful. So I shoved him over a desk and laughed it off as playful. It's on camera so I can plead reasonable force.  Temp is now passive.

The start of JAD:SSE was also pretty special because it was one of the last things you'd probably expect to happen.

The Maxim is actually quite dangerous if fired from a quad-linked gun mount. I once fried several Lokis in SGWP2 while flying a Sekhmet equipped with a Maxim.

It's worth it when you see the carnage of pitiful convoys exploding from extreme long range.

Re: Those special FreeSpace moments...
I really like that mission in Freespace 1 when you lead that attack to capture the Shivan warship commanding four wings of GTA fighters. It was just the first time I REALLY got a sense of not playing alone and having to depend on your wingmen for survival. It was like "Beta and Charlie take out the fighters, Delta hit those turrets, Alpha you stay on my wing we're going straight in...". At least that's what I was telling them in my head

In Derelict there's that big battle in Phi Eridani where you're blockading the node and holding off the Shivans. It was just a -desperate- battle when I played it. Very memorable.

And how about that fantastic moment in Blue Planet when you jump in right above the Lucifer fleet to turn the tide of your "dream" battle? That was just epic. I loved, capital LOVED the sensation the moment you come out of subspace, see the planet below you, see the Shivans, see the GTVA warships, and realize you'd seen it all before. It was so well done.

Ahhhhhhhhh, Like minded individual.

Going back to FS1, i actually felt emotional at Losing the Galatae, Squealing like a pig when the Shivans first appeared, took out the Taurus, the jumped to my position and took out the Science cruiser..

Still, thinkin back, FS1 proves that shields are for nubs.
Campaigns I've added my distinctiveness to-
- Blue Planet: Battle Captains
-Battle of Neptune
-Between the Ashes 2
-Blue planet: Age of Aquarius
-FOTG?
-Inferno R1
-Ribos: The aftermath / -Retreat from Deneb
-Sol: A History
-TBP EACW teaser
-Earth Brakiri war
-TBP Fortune Hunters (I think?)
-TBP Relic
-Trancsend (Possibly?)
-Uncharted Territory
-Vassagos Dirge
-War Machine
(Others lost to the mists of time and no discernible audit trail)

Your friendly Orestes tactical controller.

Re: Those special FreeSpace moments...
I still tighten up in my seat whenever I'm trying to defend a Terran vessel that throws its slashing beams all over the place... and often enough I'm going 'screw that, I'm out of here'.

Riding shockwaves after some massive explosion still makes me smile. Finishing off a capital ship, then blasting off with full afterburners feels good; destroying bombs the instant they left the bays is even better when I and the attacking bomber are bounced around like mad.

*

Story-wise, I found FS2 events more gripping.... the Lucifer was too impervious to conventional attacks, it was pretty clear it'd end in an equivalent to a Death Star run. FS2 felt more like a real war, with a feeling of 'we can do this if we play smart'; the losses hit harder because the ships in question didn't seemed doomed from the start. The suicide of the Colossus almost made me shout out loud because it really didn't seem necessary in my first playthrough.

I loved the user-made campaign with the feeling of being stuck with inferior hardware in Derelict and Homesick with a wing of equally cynical pilots... although Homesick made me wan to yell 'shut up about Lokis already! They're excellent fighters with a  badass heritage and I wouldn't trade mine for anything else!'

Re: Those special FreeSpace moments...
My favourite was a split second thing - I was flying straight towards a group of 3 hostile fighters more or less dead on, getting pummelled with primaries, but with my shields pumped up enough to survive. just before I would have crashed into them, I weaved down a little, and they all peeled off in 3 separate directions. It was brilliant, like a choreographed piece of movie SFX. Of course, 999,999 times out of a million they'd just have rammed into me, but this one time made that all worthwhile :)

If only such things could be scripted.

Re: Those special FreeSpace moments...
I like the Colossus in the way that there's no beam blind spot you can sneak in like the Sathanas. If a powerful ship attacked the Sathanas from broadside or rear there's no way the Sathanas can easily destroy it. It can't be said for the Colossus though . . .  ;7

That pretty much fits Terran methodology.

Terrans have beams firing to all sides.

Vasudans have beams firing to the top.

Shivans have beams firing to the front.
