Just to add my $0.52: it should work fine, since I know that the game is playable on much less.

It's not going to be a stellar performer, but it should get you through most mods without too much trouble.  A lot of the game engine is still memory and CPU bound, not GPU bound.  Most of the memory issues, and some of the CPU issues, are going to be solved with 3.6.10 and later versions.  ATI has always had issues with OpenGL apps, and the performance from them usually suffers, but that's a driver issue and not really anything hardware related.  Now that AMD is involved though, I expect that we'll see some better driver developement in the OpenGL area.

If you use up-to-date drivers, avoid using AA except at low resolutions, and fiddle with your detail settings a little bit (lowering "3D Hardware Textures" will save you some video memory), then it should play pretty well for you.  But as WMCoolmon said already, just be sure that you always play the game with the laptop plugged in, since the power saving features will kill your performance otherwise.

Cobra: Cause my labtop has dial up connection ATM, unless i drive 35mins to a hotspot to get wireless signal. And a mulit gig on a dial up is a killer. So its between driving to a hotspot, or downloading everyting at my moms (Cable conn) house and loading it on here VIA flash drive that holds 512 MB. SO the second option will take time, and a ton of gas. 15 mins one way, several trips.

And..i dont have FS2 installed yet. Borrowed my FS2 cd's going on a year now.. trying to get them back.

I could think of a bunch of fairly sensible reasons why someone would ask whether a certain PC could run FS2_Open so I pointed out that they existed.

He should be able to play retail anyways. So the FSO executables aren't that large a download.

While I love Freespace I wouldn't play the original now unless you paid me (Or unless it was for bug testing reasons). Three years of SCP additions have spoiled me. I doubt I'm the only one who feels that way.

I deleted every bit of retail but the data folder tree and the retail VPs.

I just can't bring myself to play on the retail build, as evidenced by the lengths I went through to play frickin' Homesick on 3.6.9 (two missions of which seem to be beyond saving).

I got my wireless to work correctly (i had probs before), and i downloaded FS2 Retail via one of 3-4 self-installing launchers (lol, just downloaded a few and tried to see which ones worked). Now i am using i think, Turneys SIL to get FS2 + SCP installed (or reinstalled in the case of FS2, i thought i might as well). I think i used the 3.6.9 SIL but i did not have SCP nor the FS2 to run the build. As all it seemd to give were about 4 things, the 2regular and 2debug builds. IIRC that is.

...Maybe you'd have to just re-do the mission step-by-step from scratch in FRED SCP to get the same results without copying everything over?

Seems SCP works. I used some installer and use the 3.6.9 build. Multi works as well.
Time to search for millways nebula effects.

One thing, i cant view the campaigns (derlect, and otehrs came with the installer) in the campaign view, only the main FS2 campaign.

Also, where is the 'new to SCP' ultimate guide? Kara's FAQ, or is there a dedicated one somewhere?

You can't view the other campaigns unless you select them in the mod tab of the launcher before running the game.

There are Mini PCI videocards, but I dunno if any of them have decent 3D GPU chips. Many laptops use a Mini PCI slot for a WiFi card, some may be able to use other Mini PCI card types.

I run SCP on a p3 933 with a gf4 mx. It runs pretty darn well... i disable the adveffects mvp and i'm good to go. I usually get around 60-70 fps, and rarely if ever go below 30, even in the middle of huge battles. In two days time however, i upgrade to a core 2 duo with a 7600gt so i'll never need to see double digit frame rates again
