Title: Diaspora 2nd Voice Acting Casting Call
Post by: karajorma on July 15, 2010, 07:32:30 pm
For those of you who missed the last one.

Diaspora still isn't quite at the point where we will start adding the voice acting yet but we still want to know who is available to act for us.

We have a variety of major and minor parts we'll need to fill. As with the 1st casting call we're going to start with stuff from message.tbl as that is the most generic stuff and can be used even if someone records lines for us and then isn't available later for a full part. For those of you who don't know much about the engine, message.tbl handles the generic stuff from the redshirts you fly with like "Behind you!" or "DRADIS contacts!"

Here's a list of sample entries.

As before you may choose to record these or you can try to record a set of lines that cover the same situations with different words. Feel free to be creative but bear in mind that Colonial pilots won't always be facing Cylons (for instance in multiplayer TvT) and any messages that do refer to toasters are going to sound rather strange there. Try to keep swearing to a very occasional frak or gods damn. We'd like to see all the lines covered so that we can judge your range.

In the last round of tryouts we had many people who simply read the lines out loud. We need people who can actually act the lines. So if you're saying a line with some emotion in it, we want to hear that. Listen to your lines before you send them in. If they sound rather dull and emotionless to you, they probably will to us too.

In general we're probably simply going to use your lines to judge your acting ability prior to a callback but the team reserve the right to use any voice acting samples sent to us (with credit) in any way we see fit for the game. (I say that mainly so that we don't have any issues if we can't contact someone who provides samples but want to use them in the game anyway).

Make sure that any voice acting you send us is as clear as possible. You may be the next Robert De Niro but it won't count for anything if we can hardly hear your voice over pops, clicks and the whine of your processor fan. Each of the lines should be in a separate 16bit 44khz stereo wav file. The entire set should then be archived (preferably rar or 7zip) before emailing them to diasporavoices [AT] googlemail.com. Please do not send mp3 files as we can't use them in the game so they will most likely be filed in the bin.

If this thread is still stickied at the top of the forum, the audition is still open so don't worry about sending the files.

Team or wing? The list is moderately inconsistent.

I'll try to push some people your way.

I think I'm gonna definitely give this a swing.  Just one question for the woefully pop-culture-deprived among us...is DRADIS pronounced with a long A or a short one? :p

Little nitpick, Kara. The term bogey is used for designating radar contacts with no confirmed identity. Bandit is the term used for confirmed hostile contacts.

This might come in handy for prospective voice actors when constructing new lines: http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/List_of_terms_%28RDM%29

Not Battlestar Galactica related, but this is where most of the terms the show uses comes from: http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/usaf/docs/mcm3-1-a1.htm

Here's a pretty good article on SimHQ that explains operational brevity protocol quite concisely: http://www.simhq.com/_air/air_008a.html . BSG follows brevity pretty lightly so don't worry about that article being so down about wordy transmissions. "Apollo, we got one turkey playing hide and seek in the clouds, no sparrows, engaging offensive."

The use of 'wing' and 'team' is a bit inconsistent since it is surprisingly that way in the show too at times. However, the bogey/bandit thing needs fixing :)

This sounds fun, and I think I can do it. Well, I can act, I believe. What's the policy on pre-processing voice clips before sending them out? Just noise removal, or can we adjust the pitch and junk too? Would you rather we leave noise in?

I mean there's this inexplicable buzzing noise in the clip, and since I have Audacity, I thought I might as well clean it up.

I'll see if I can get a better microphone, and hope that solves it, otherwise get set for some noise...
Title: Re: Diaspora 2nd Voice Acting Casting Call
Post by: Mongoose on July 24, 2010, 01:22:22 am
I don't know if it's just my own inexperience talking, but I'd be wary of going too crazy with the noise removal feature in Audacity.  I've had many times where it definitely yanked out something from my voice and left me sounding rather robotic.
Title: Re: Diaspora 2nd Voice Acting Casting Call
Post by: Scourge of Ages on July 24, 2010, 01:58:15 am
I got a microphone that wasn't my headset, so I'm set noise-wise. What's that about a stereo file though? Can I record channel and just duplicate it to make a stereo file?
EDIT: Never mind, that's what I did and it worked.

Please, no-one say "negatory" - the proper expression is "negative", and only the biggest arseholes on the radio use that horrible non-expression.  It was probably invented by George W's speech writers.  Honestly, if you run with that, it would be too annoying for anyone who uses RT in real life to play the game more than once.

Actually it's a hell of a lot older than that.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/negatory

Quote
negatory
"expressing negation," 1580, from M.Fr. negatoire,  from M.L. negatorius  "negative," from L. negatus  (see negation). In the sense "no" it is U.S. Air Force slang from the early 1950s.

Not that I'm particularly bothered about using it. Just that it seems pretty silly to single out one piece of air force slang.

Bush's writers loved to use it because it was an attempt to go "see he flies planes! stupid people don't fly planes!" (well... for some reason we reward the ones who fly into birds but not the ones who do their jobs right every day...)

But on its own, it's proper flyboy slang.

There's also a reason you say longer terms over radio. Things like the phonetic alphabet because you want to make sure that you're heard.

Not quite.  It's because many letters or words sound similar and could easily be confused, especially where heavy accents or back ground noise are present.  For example, "no" could easily be confused with "go".  B, d and e sound similar, as do m and n.  S and f can be hard to distinguish on the radio.  E and i can get confusing with conversations between French and English speakers.  Even the numbers 2 and 3 are often indistinguishable, amazingly, with foreign accents. The phonetic alphabet and numbers and the use of standard international phraseology are critical in multi-national RT, but I have to say that US pilots are terrible at it.  They drop numbers from read-backs, use non-standard terminology and often don't bother to read back the details of critical clearances, responding with just a callsign or "roger" (illegal response).  They're not alone, by any means, but it is a predominant disposition.  But then again, BSG's continual and undisciplined RT chatter and distorted sound may be more representative of US RT - European and certainly British RT use tends to be stricter and clearer, especially UK military, which is generally free from distortion or garbling and is fairly strict on what is actually said.

But "negatory" has never been used outside the US and, frankly, sounds ridiculous.

By the way, my reference to George W was tongue in cheek - I hadn't heard him use "negatory" but it does fit the pattern of horrible non-words and mispronunciations that he would use in public speeches.

Hi,

I've just found this, and I have some questions regarding the voice acting that you're requesting.

Do you want me to change my voice for each of the lines such as different accent, or will that be done in post, or do you want me to change it using a program?

Can you give me an idea as to how intense you want the lines for "Green Team Arrived - "This is Green wing, we have arrived."" and for the Purple Team and the others?

Thanks,
a1mck

I'd say to go with the accent you feel you can do best. If you can do more then one, great, we might be able to use you for more then one role then. Don't change anything in post unless you feel you're really good with sound editing. And if you are, you should be joining the team anyway :)

Can you give me an idea as to how intense you want the lines for "Green Team Arrived - "This is Green wing, we have arrived."" and for the Purple Team and the others?

Yea, those aren't exactly "oh my gods the Columbia is gone" kinds of moments - you probably want to do those in a calm, reassuring voice.

Thanks for the reply! I'm about a 1/4 done, and I should have them out to you by tonight.

I've done them in 3's so you have 3 separate tones for each line.

Please let me know if the quality is to your standards, or if you'd like any changes made.

Thanks,

Generally for the regular dialog everything should be in a calm professional voice, minus when you're being blown up (but even then don't overact. We don't need Calculons and Shatners :p )

In the campaign itself, ideally we'll have some direction notes with the dialog.

Nope, we're still open. Just need to get our sound engineer guy to sort them out, we'll get back to you. Actually I'll go so far as to say that since we're going for episodic releases, even once R1 roles have all been assigned it still makes sense to send your clips because we'll definitely be able to use good voice actors for subsequent releases, as well. It might take us a while to get back to some people but we'll get to it.

Question on the topic of accents- did any Irish accents show up and thus can be considered canon? I grew up over there before moving to the States and did my secondary education there, so it's nice and fresh up there with my standard non-accented American (huzzah for Arizona being accent neutral).

If we've already sent an audition in can we send in alternative auditions with different styles of delivery? Or should we just stick with the audition we've already sent? I guess in a way I'm asking if I can augment my previous audition with a different persona's delivery, or if I should have consolidated it all into a single audition email. Sorry if this has been answered already. I don't want to be the bastard that screws up how you all have organized your casting call. lol.

Yes it is. It'll remain open until we have all the roles assigned and have announced we've started recording the VA. We're still polishing some of the dialogue, after missions are considered final we'll assign roles and get back to people who would fit those roles best. Until then, the more the merrier - so sure, send your samples :)

The site was never gone, we just switched the address to www.diasporagame.com (old one was diaspora-game.com). By all means send us your voice samples. We don't need Baltar atm and probably won't in the foreseeable future though; we'll basically need voices of pilots and possibly the Theseus's comm officer, stuff like that. Just follow the instructions on what to record and you should be fine. Looking forward to hearing more samples.

Newman, what do you need said by the Commander. And I'll get started today on it today. Theseus arriving, commander on deck. And taking over cap duties for the fleet.
Gun batteries Alpha  through Echo, prepare  for target bearing. Switch to salvo fire. and target their center axis. X.O. send a marine detail to secondary D.C. central. Prepare
to repel cylon boarding party.  You can P.M. me if you would like.

For now we're still modifying the dialogue here and there, so you're best off just recording the examples as we outlined in the first post of this thread. Of course if you want to add some extra lines of dialogue like you gave an example of in your post, go right ahead, just make sure you've also done the lines we outlined in the first post. If everyone does the same lines it gives us a baseline comparison to work with.
The way this works is, first we assign roles based on availability of actors and the samples they sent, then we give you guys the actual lines to record (once we have the mission texts final). For now, we just need those examples.
Thanks in advance for your contribution!

Well the first post has all the details. Just follow them and send in your audition.

I was wondering if It would be acceptable to make 2 versions of the dialogue list and send them both

1.) being exact, word for word, what is listed for auditions

and

2.) A version that (I'm assuming) still fits or delivers the same point but is Either slightly different than what you have listed or has been changed mostly

As I said in the first post we don't mind you making your own lines up completely as that actually makes it more likely we'll use them as is. Just bear in mind that you can't make assumptions about the enemy in them as the lines might be needed for missions where you take on Tauron Rebels or some other non-cylon enemies.

This reminds me.  I need a new headset.

Once I do, I'll be happy to give it a go.

I will keep that in mind, Thank you.

My only other question is: do you want me to add a static effect at the beginning/end of each clip? I'm assuming no because you guys would make your own but I just figured I'd ask lol

No, keep your clips clean - that way our sound guys can work with them as they like.

I figured :p

I guess I might as well mention then that if needed i can do some sound effect work. Although I'd assume you'd just rip most of the effects out from the show since the best way to replicate a bsg experience would be to have accurate audio and effects, but In my free time I spend alot of time with music production software such as ableton live or fl studio or alot of NI's stuff and Know my way around synths, modulation software etc well enough to make decent effects although I mostly make music it's much the same concept just on a smaller scale (hence easier for the most part :p)

Actually, no we don't rip anything directly out of the show. We do all content from scratch, but we try to emulate the feeling of the show as best we can.
We already have sound engineers but why don't you link us some examples of your stuff so we can get some idea of what you can do?

From what I can recall we did indeed receive your email and (while I will have to go listen again, was a while ago) I think I actually liked your submission. Apologies to everyone for being quiet for such a long time, we will be emailing everyone soonish to confirm who's still available and who's not so we can proceed.

All I have uploaded atm are full length songs that for the most part I'm not at all crazy about If you want I can link one or two of those, I have some free time right now so i might just put a little "sound effect" demo together and throw it up for you guys since I have something stuck in my head anyways XD

but let me know if you want a song or two of mine linked as I also have alot better projects that I never uploaded just sitting on my comp that also might show a bit more of what I can do? i guess? lol

Oh snap. I did some auditions and now put them all into .ogg... But I thought the FS2_open engine can handle .ogg for voice files, so is that alright?

IIRC, .wav is the preferred format, as all files have to be edited ( to a point). But i may be wrong on that one.

EDIT: Yeah, i was right.

Quote from: karajorma
Each of the lines should be in a separate 16bit 44khz stereo wav file

Yep, .ogg isn't that useful for us as it loses quaility every time it's edited. We can't use it for much the same reason you don't keep editing a .jpg file.

Some people did a research into that done by a magazine (Computer Totaal or CT, dunno which). The quality differences after a thousand saves is minimal.

Got an e-mail from you guys a couple of weeks ago asking if I was still available (of course I am!). I replied to it the day I got it, but I just wanted to extend my thanks for allowing me to be involved in your project! I look forward to recording stuff for real soon!

Normally I wouldn't post in a (possibly) necro thread, but I wanted to ask if you folks are still looking for VA submissions?

Just played through Shattered Armistice and it totally rocks! I got my butt handed to me in a bag but nice to show some toasters how it's done!

Anyway if you are still looking for voice actors myself and the missus would be very interested in submitting samples.

We will definitely need more actors for the next release, however it will be some time before we reach a dialogue lock point and are ready to assign roles to VA's. So do send us samples, just be ready for a bit of a wait :)

Awesome!

We'll get some samples ready in the next few days, any preference as to accent? We're both Scottish but I can do Middle American, American (older, gruff, sorta Lance Henrikson-y), generic English, Cockney and Eastern European. My Partner also does Middle American, Australian, generic English, Cockney and full on RP.

Looking forward to getting some stuff together for you.

My Partner also does [snip] Australian
Whenever someone says they can do our accent, I shudder and hope they haven't gotten all of their source from Steve Irwin :P

It'd be good to have samples with the full voice range. There's a few parts where we'd like older sounding characters.
