Progress at long last!
>03/08/2010 | BlackDove (http://ce.hard-light.net/bwo/team.php)
Recruitment drive has proved quite the success so far, and some of our new talented artists have finalized many of the assets, as well as being hard at work on ones not yet finalized.
We will be showing off some of this progress soon.
Stay tuned.
Glad to notice that the recruitment thread is turning out to be useful! :D
-
:D :D :D
-
Hurrah!
-
\o/
-
WOW! great news! :D
-
Yeah, the wheels are turning at long last. :)
-
Hallelujah! We might all live to see BWO afterall! :P
But on a more serious note without jokey comparisons to DNF ( :P ), great news, glad to hear that the train is moving out again :D
-
DNF = Did Not Finish.
We will finish!
-
Hooray!
-
We still need a dedicated UVmapper, at least :P
But yeah, overall the recruit drive was very successfull :)

You may wish to share him with us, though... :nervous: :)
-
share who?
-
The dedicated UVmapper, but only when he's done with BWO. :)
-
The dedicated UVMapper they, and I quote:
We still need a dedicated UVmapper, at least :P
That one?
-
The one they don't have. Exactly. ;)
-
I don't get it...
-
I don't get it...
Well, he wants the UVmapaper, who didn't join BWO yet, to help INF once he's finished the work on BWO.
So you can play BWO and INF, which aren't out yet, on a PC you haven't bought yet. :P

DNF = Did Not Finish.
WWF = We Will Finish!
:p

I don't mind sharing at all personally, as long as he\she could manage 2 projects with a good leverage. My ideal situation would be to have the team enjoy working together for future projects (that wouldn't take a decade to complete :D )
-
Not a bad idea. Maybe the SCP and EA/JC may share a few assets, and that'd help both projects. :)
-
A "dedicated UVW mapper"? I see how this can seem a reasonable request to someone not in the know. However, you'll be hard pressed to find someone who is willing to just UVW other people's models. There are several reasons for this, most importantly:
1) Modelers who can't UVW tend to produce poorer models, on average. This is due to the fact that they don't really understand how to set up the mesh so it can be mapped properly. It's also due to the fact that people who can't UVW aren't by definition very experienced cg artists and their models usually won't be quite as good. So a "dedicated UVW mapper" would be a better cg artist who's forced to constantly fix up less experienced modeler's problematic meshes. Meshes he could have done from scratch himself better. When doing this too often frustration will set in. Believe me, I've been there :)
Also last but not least, 2) Just UVW-ing would be boring.
What you guys want is a dedicated modeler who can UVW map and, if possible, texture as well. Even if that guy will just spend most of his time working on other people's stuff at least he'll be able to fix them as needed. The reason I'm saying this? I think you'll have better luck asking for a modeler and then requiring he be able to UVW map as well, then advertising for a dedicated UVW mapper. Most CGI artists will just dismiss that as boring and keep on walking.
At any rate, best of luck to you guys.

I only mentioned staff personally. The assets are tricky subject because the reason BWO is taking its eternity is because we want our assets to be unique\exclusive until release. If that weren't the case, we would've replaced them with community available ships.
But all in all, this sort of thing isn't really up to me. This kind of "negotiations" are Blackdove's territory, and I fear I may be stepping on his toes already :)

There's some merit\truth in what you posted, however I'd like to bring out some comments.
I also find UVmapping somewhat boring, but believe it or not, in the past, in real life, I've actually worked with people who enjoyed UVmapping. Actually, it was almost their only function in the development pipeline.
So I don't think its such an unreasonable request to advertise for a dedicated UVmapper (I agree it may be next to impossible to find one though, but doesn't hurt to ask :P )
I actually think that advertising for a modeler who can UVmap, and then put him to work on UVmapping already existing models would be the most unfair (we actually did that, but we were 100% transparent about it with the people involved. But even so, its aparent that it generates a kind of "morale decline" on those members, such that their next tasks will involve the modelling and then UVmapping an asset from scratch).
When all is said and done, even if we don't get that "dedicated UVmapper", things wil get done. They will take more time though. Currently we have 3 capital ships and 2 Fighters that are fully modeled, but in need of UV's. Having someone who would focus on the UV's frees the other modelers to work on the other stuff that hasn't even started. :)
-
Well, it comes down to preferences and organization. Thought you guys might have an easier time recruiting for a modeler/mapper then just a uvw mapper. As for people who enjoy uvw mapping, I actually know what you mean - on some models I've actually found it relaxing. It depends on the mood and ship you're doing, only I haven't found many people who share that sentiment. Most have an inexplicable hatred for the process, hatred that I personally never understood - it is, after all, a somewhat easy part of the whole progress.
Anyway, best of luck to you guys. Wish I could lend a hand but between Diaspora and RL I don't have much time left.
-
As far as Mobius' point is concerned, there's not much chance of sharing models because what we need is very specific (we don't have models for the sake of models, and generally, they all have to conform to a specific architecture to fit within the greater context) meaning we don't really need what others may have, and in reverse, we want to keep our models close to the vest, because they're original and crafted specifically for the purposes they're put to in BlackWater. So unfortunately, while the idea is perfectly sound, it's not feasible.
As far as the UV Mappers are concerned, Raven was making an offhand remark which would improve the efficiency of the process we're currently in. I fully understand and agree with your sentiment newman, in fact, if there ever were this mythical UVMapping/modeling/texturing beast, and they did apply to work on BWO, it is a given we would welcome them to work on the other models (should they want to) as there is still plenty to be done. However at this moment, a UVMapper would be especially welcome because they would expedite the "big picture" process, enriching the general flow. Raven already went into how and why in greater detail.
At the end of the day, members of the community will either decide they want to help and bring this campaign to release, or they won't. So far, the response has exceeded my personal expectations and I am very happy with all the new and potential crew members that have come aboard to work on the project. Maybe if you find some time in the future newman, you can give me a shout and we can find something relaxing for you to do :)

Heheh that was slick :) I'll PM you if anything changes. ATM I'm swamped but (hopefully) I won't always be.

"Progress"? There must be a valve time type thing for that word as well. Hehe.
-
Valve Time? You must mean Goober5000 Time.
-
Valve Time? You must mean Goober5000 Time.
By 'Goober5000 Time' you mean stuck in 1998? :p
-
Rofl. If they didnt have BWO to work on they would be lost here at HLP. Nothing to do. Something would be 'missing' in their hearts.

Uh, while BWO looks awesome (still) and I personally am very excited for it, there is a great deal of other talent on HLP working on a variety of interesting things.
-
I think he was talking about Goob and BlackDove.
-
I think he was talking about Goob and BlackDove.
Goober5000 is not involved in BWO.
-
I think he was talking about Goob and BlackDove.
No, he was just being a douche.
-
Sweet, maybe we will actually be able to play BWO sometime before we die! *wink*
-
As long as you don't have a terminal illness, you should be fine :D
-
:bump:
Any news? How it is going? :)
-
Going slow unfortunately for a couple of reasons, but it is getting there. I'll try to finish up whatever backend is on my plate personally by the end of the year, the rest will be up to Raven, and then we'll be able to push forward proper.
-
Im still alive :D
-
After what 8 or is it 9 year i dont rember yall might be done maybe lol?????? Sometime before Dec 21 2012????? anyways this mod iv been looking forward to for long long long long long and more long time. Alright. Who the heck is that noob ?

I don't know whether he was trolling, flaming or supporting BWO
-
I don't know whether he was trolling, flaming or supporting BWO
All of the above :p
-
I think he was supporting BWO.
And I was not being a duche. I stated that BWO has been in their lives for 8 years. If they stopped work on it I bet they'd feel somethings missing. Like amputation.

Wait, I've seen this before... (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=35340.0)
Yeah, with Reciprocity, Over The Top, Lost Souls......... :P
-
any recent news from BWO? This one is particularly of interest to me...
Also, I'm quite intrigued at the vanir: somehow not freespace IMHO, but really nice nontheless... will that sol faction only use those 2 fighters?
-
Nop, the Sol faction uses other fighters.
-
The SCP has its own fleet, actually. :)
-
How is the progress moving or hit another wall?
-
It seems to have petered out on the account that I haven't seen anything on the "to-do" list updated in a while.
-
Its just that life's a *****
-
Indeed.
Our list of positions needed is still very much actual if people want to contribute.
-
It is a shame that I can no longer spent some time modding openly, since I've started to work at a big game company... Not it isn't EA :P
-
PopCap Games?

Well, in that case you can spend some time texturing openly :P

Stompy Bot Productions inc.?

is there any news
-
Not something that we can share. Sorry :)
-

-
Not something that we can share. Sorry :)
Still the case. We're not dead yet. :)
-
why is achived
-
Because we have a deal with the administration :P
Fret not. Actually these last 6 months or so have been rife with internal developments. In fact, I don't recall we ever having so much activity and asset development :)
-
even trough it had taken like 13 years this is one of those campaigns that is worth of wait quality models and explosions and the story without shivans..
-
Explosions?! You got the wrong mod!
On BWO, every problem is solved through diplomacy! :P

Hey! If you want to kill people, go play other mods :-P
-
So what's going on, exactly? :)
-
BWO Is now the best FS2 nosepicking simulator.
-
*Lashes Oddgrim* Go back to finishing the *redacted*'s textures!! :D
-
So you've got new WIP models?
-
*Lashes Oddgrim* Go back to finishing the *redacted*'s textures!! :D
Naw, not gonna happen until the rest is taped on. ^^
And like I said mobious BWO is now the premiere FS2 nose picking simulator.
-
is there any update
-
I was AWOL for a while, but I'm getting my bearings back again.
I have to harass Zacam regarding something he was supposed to be doing.
I have to whip Kobrar into working some... same goes for Hades.
We have to keep girls away from Oddgrim, so that he keeps doing beautiful Vasudan ships on FSU :P
-

So THAT was what I am missing.. brb 3 months :p
-
I am anticipating this.
-
We know :nervous:
-
I lost my believe in a release of this project a long time ago... I do not think, that this campaign will be ever released :(. It was announced 14 years ago... and i heard nothing from it for years ^^.
Even i have to say, that i played the Demo the first time ever during the last year and was surprised, that it was actually voice acted.
-
You might end up surprised in the long run :)
There was a fair bit of activity this year. Not during the summer though, because this year I decided I needed a real vacation. :P
-
LoL. When I played the demo once a long, long, long, LONG time ago, I didn't even have SCP back then. That was back in 2006 I think. Even before I created my StormFront mod.
I am not totally hot for this mod, though I am still looking forward to see it released and I'm sure it will be released when the time is right. Hell, even Duke Nukem Forever made it to the counter. Never give up hope.
I have total confidence in you to bring this out. Don't disappoint me. :)
-
I have total confidence in you to bring this out. Don't disappoint me. :)
No pressure, eh?! :P
-
Nope. Just trying to address your conscience. ;) I want you to feel GUILTY if you fail. :mad2:
-
I won't feel guilty at all, because I do my best, with what life gives me :D
-
I hope it'll be done, one day or another. Keep it up!
-
They will get it done, it's just hard to pull of something like BWO a very high quality campaign. Without major delays so waiting is worth it.
I'm just happy if I'm able to to play the complete version before i die old age...
-
Much better to release in episodes then one giant campaign when there is such a shortage of time and support.
