Hell, this is good. Did you draw it by hand?

Drawn by hand, scanned. After that, I followed the first part of this tutorial (http://pralinkova-princezna.deviantart.com/art/GIMP-tutorial-as-good-as-PS-84474080), which I got off a google search.

Emo dog :)

Reminds me of Starwolf/foxfire......... Draw more though.

I have 2 more already scanned that I can't work on until monday (at my grandparents at the moment). Another one I haven't scanned, and then I'll probably do more stuff this weekend, seeing as I have nothing better to do here. But the other 3 I have done are all headshots like this. I'm basically learning as I go.

Meh, too lazy to do the inking. I hate that part.

Well, heres the original scans of the other two. First one is of Brian, who's father got custody after his parents divorced. His dad at one point dated Sky's mom, when Sky was about 11. After Sky moved, he accidently ran into Brian.

The second is... uh, i think it's called a fursona. It's me as a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. Which is the kind of dog i own.

First one is my first real drawing. The time on the clock is the time that my clock said when I finished drawing that. I'm more of a nocturnal artist- I can't seem to draw before 9:15 PM.

Second is of Cody, who lives in the apartment next to Sky.

Double post.

You asked for it.

^^ First attempt at drawing Sky's body. Obviously, not the best.
Next, a drawing of Sky in his room. See the deviantart page for a full description+bigger picture.

Finally, one I drew at the pool. Second attempt at drawing his body, still not very happy. Hoping it'll improve with practice.

Why the Swiss flag? Pretty good mate.

I wanted to give him some sort of brand logo on his shirt. That was the first that came to my mind. I like Switzerland, it's the only true republic in the world.

I went to the library and scanned some more stuff... one of which is by far the best thing I've drawn so far. I scanned, and sent myself an E-mail with the files attached, right? I stay and make sure it got sent. It has the files on it, good, good.

I got home, opened up the E-mail to save them to my HD, and the E-mail was there. Only, no files. I went back to my inbox, and next to it was a message informing me that the size of the attachments exceeded my quota, and I would have to 'contact the sender to inform them'. WHAT THE HELL. I didn't even have anything in my inbox besides that, my archive is only 5mbs of my 100mbs quota, nothing in my deleted and drafts folder, and my sent folder only has the e-mail i was trying to get, but that one didn't have the attachments either!

Dammit I can't wait until we get a new scanner. Then I can stop using the libraries crap one with there old dells trying to run vista.  :ick:

Straight scan of Silent Night with my BRAND-NEW scanner!!! *Birthday cazoo favor thing noise*

As you can tell from the distortion of the paper from over erasing, I couldn't get sky's head right.

I tried to do hands, then after a couple attempts just said 'screwit'

Sky's shirt says 'Jynx', which is the name of my band in those daydreams you have in music class.  :D

Titan's First Law of Life states that any being capable of sentient thought is a prick. (Commonly abbreviated to: I think, therefore I stink)

Titan's Second Law of Life says that exactly how big a prick something is varies throughout it's life.

Titan's Third Law of Life is no longer understandable by common man, though some say it has something to do with pie.

I HAZ A TABLET! A bunch of strange events that I won't bother to explain got me a tablet (I think it's called Bamboo  :wtf: )!

... only, there's no space on the desk because I'm the only person that bothers to take care of the crap I leave there, and now I'm not allowed to use it until we get a new desk. Which will be never, since that was supposed to happen weeks ago (Along with cleaning this one off so we could get rid of it-I was the only person that bothered), but my mom decided that painting their room was more important... Selfish prat  :p (I'm the only one that uses the computer anyway. People just come up to talk to me, then leave all their stuff on the desk. And I have a short attention span?!?)

Anyway, here's another pencil drawing. Nothing particularily special, just finalizing Sky's character design. Now working on a bird named Kyle.  :p

What, don't your skivvies have pockets?

I don't know for what purpose these are, but something I noticed at a glance is that you've drawn the head from pretty much the same angle in every picture in this thread. If it's because it's the only angle you're comfortable drawing, then that's probably one of the things you should practise most.

Ya. Was waiting for someone to notice. When I decided to relearn how to draw, that was what I drew. I've tried several others. But they were bad enough that I didn't post them.

Uhm, neither. Just... drawings. I have backstories for everyone I draw (I love writing backstories) but I'm not bothering to do a comic or something, since I wouldn't be able to finish a single page.

Pretty much. Though Chapter 2 is miles better.

I would say see the rest of them from the link in my sig, but that probably wouldn't help.

What I said (That's actually kindof what I looked like back then, nearly half a year ago) is true- I had absolutely no idea what to do at that point. So I simply did that, and by the time I started the second of those two pages, the story flow hit me like a bullet train.

Once school starts up, I'll probably start doing new ones, and the kind that this thread's supposed to be about will probably thin out a little. Based on my schedule this year, I probably won't be able to find time to do more anthro stuff. However, stickman joe is: A) easy and fun to draw and B) I get all of my inspiration for it from school, so I'll finally have new ideas.

And my new one too, actually. (http://www.blackspherestudios.com/profiles/Blackhole/)

The reason being is that the pose is similar, with the crossed arms.

You've obviously mastered colouring in. As shown with earlier works, i'm gonna say stick with it and I want to see a comic strip (a storyboard will do) in a month. With lazorrs and spaceships and your characters :)

Uhm, I actually drew a strip for the heck of it the other day. With laz0rs. I'll scan it when I get home- working on a science project right now.

I use Adobe Photoshop elements, though I haven't done anything with these. They're just the drawings I do at school to help me concentrate.

Not to get too far from the point of Titan's artwork, which is of course the nature of this thread, but here's what that was from, Dekker:

Spoofs everything and anything anime. All the eps are on-site, but you should refer to the episode guide to put them in order.

Cheers.

REd bull, the universal pacifier.

I like the shape of the main protagonists nose. It's uber-realistic and therefore cute as a button :3

I wouldn't mind seeing a comic or something in the ... less midget-ey style you have at the top.  Even though they're just heads, the way they're drawn makes it seem that their bodies would be taller.

@Retsof: I got tired of making crappy bodies whose scale slides down as you get close to their feet. So I decided to go for a more cartoony style.

It's a colouring tutorial. GEared mainly towards photoshop, but the theory applies to any program if you know how to use the features.

My demon has awakened,
The Jackal has arrived.
Nothing here to hide behind,
In this plane of my mind, we are alone.
No chance to outrun him,
For how can I run from myself?
He chases me, always faster,
Draining my will and emotion into his own.
Fear, Hate, Jealousy.
All are mine, All are his.
Fated twins we are,
Never to be parted.
Tremble in fear, ye mortals,
For he just finished what he started.

Instructions:

1: Write 'THE GAME' sideways on your hand.
2: Go to a public place full of people you know.
3: If you see someone walking, make it so you're walking face to face, and make sure the hand with the writing is closest to them.
4: As they near, hold out you hand, and say 'HI5!'
5: Be ready to yank away your hand when they see, and, if necessary, run.

Instructions:

1A: If used in conjunction with HI5 game, draw this on the same hand, and make sure you conceal your knuckles. Do this as a follow up to the HI5. Timing is important.
1: Make sure they don't see the dark blotches on your hand.
2: Hold it up in a way that they can see it.
3: When they go to tap you, watch them get hammered.

Alternately, you can to a handshake, when the shake, grab and twist their had so your knuckles are on top. When they look to see what the hell you're doing, ta-da.
Just be careful that they don't put their thumb over the G.

You realize that any given meme (like 'the game') becomes more and more likely to be ignored or actively shot down the more it's overused, right?

This by it's very nature cannot happen to the game. If it's overused, it doesn't matter because the people that are overusing still find it entertaining, and they'll keep playing it and having fun with it. If people are annoyed by it, they simply won't pay attention, or worse yet, shout at the people for saying it. That's partially one of the reasons people play the game, to annoy people, so shouting would only encourage people to continue. If as a result of too many people thinking it's embarrassingly inane enough people stop doing it, the game ceases to be overused. If people ignore the game because it's too overused, the people that overuse it will simply start doing it to the people that are overusing it with themselves. The game will only die when something even more obnoxious takes its place. Even then, "That's what she said" hasn't died yet...

I decided to draw me and my friends getting excited over... I don't know. Point is, we get excited like that a lot.

On the left is me, of course.
In the middle is my friend Nathan, who is small, doesn't have internet at his house, like to draw, and, at my constant hounding, has decided to start an account here in the near future, thanks to the library's FREE COMPUTER AND SCANNER. He's wearing his customary fluff-filled hoodie and jeans. Apparently the icon on his hoodie (special request, he was with me for 2 of the 3 periods i drew this over) is what I believe he called a Japanese Rice Ball.

...

Right... He requested to be a raccoon for unknown reasons.

The other one is my other main man Tommy, who is a cat person, and thus a cat. He's on the cross country team, has a pacemaker, and has never gone a day (to my knowledge) without wearing running pants made out of that stuff that goes vvvt sssht sssht vvvt when you walk.

Just a little sketch, anyway...

Nice.  Funny commentary.  One thing is that there dosen't seem to be much difference between creatures.  Though what you could do to fix it is beyond me.  Kinda funny (as in "ha ha", not wrong) the way Nathan's ears poke out of his hood.
Title: Re: Titan's art thread - content added 12/8
Post by: Scotty on December 08, 2009, 11:31:14 pm
It's the teeth and muzzle.  All of them are the same, so they look the same.

I would shorten the muzzle on the cat, stretch the face a little wider, and make the nose smaller (cat noses are really small compared to their faces).  Basically, the face is too square, and it shoud be closer to a triangle.  Much the same with the Racoon, though it would be easier to tell it was a racoon without the hoodie. *shrug*  If anything, the muzzle and nose on the racoon should be even smaller (proportionally) than the cat's.

That said, you still draw better than I ever could.

So... at the moment... the power strip for the desktop computer is broken. It has been for a couple days, but this is the first chance I've had to use the Macbook. The printer doesn't like the macbook. They don't get along. I had to put a leash on the macbook so that it wouldn't attack the printer. The printer didn't come with software for use with the macbook, and only prints. at any rate, the only outlet within 5 feet of the printer is the power strip.  :ick:

I'm gonna go work on my essay...

Insomia + Caramelldansen = ???

So, the night before new years eve, I was lying in bed, around 10:30. Couldn't sleep, so I grabbed my iTouch, got on youtube, and put on caramelldansen. And all of a sudden, the weirdest thing popped into my head. So I drew it.

... right...

EFRP: Jason the Ballerina Ninja

So, I woke up on December 31st. And as I lay groggily in bed with the sheet trying to strangle me, the word tapdancing appeared in my head... and then ninja. And then, together.

Later that day, I went ahead and drew something loosely based off that.

Part of the Escape from Reality Project (http://mo-zz.deviantart.com/art/Escape-From-Reality-Project-146481688) my friend started.

Insomia: New Year's Eve 09

This kind of tells the story of New Year's Eve at my house. Everyone else is asleep. Lonely, I sit awake until midnight, in the dark, next to my clock. It just feels good, being able to say hello to the new year. It was around 11:20 when I started, I finished around 11:55.

However, this never actually happened. I sit in the bottom bunk in my room (the top is never taken.) The top is parallel to the wall, while the bottom is in the middle, pointing the opposite direction, so it forms a T from the top. The bottom isn't connected to the top. On one side of the bottom is a little cubby desk that the top sits on (IE, it came with the bed, the point is to put the bed on it. Sorry, but I realized it sounded kindof ramshackle). The other side has some drawers in the front where I keep my socks and pajamas, and then farther in are some shelves. The middle one is about even with the mattress, and that's where my clock is.

And yes, I know the torso anatomy is all screwed up. I don't care.

A writing thing I've been working on. It's a sort of science-fiction story, with a lot of fantasy added.... You'll see later. Note this is part 2, part 1 was really short, and I only have an extremely rough draft. You're not missing much.

Winry ran into the room, followed by an only slightly-more composed Shael. The man at the computer continued clacking away at his keyboard for a few more seconds, giving the other two a moment to compose themselves. With a decisive final jab at the keys, Jackson turned around to face them, as the map on the computer began moving.
“We have possible enemy contact at the University” announced Jackson.
“Are we sure it’s him?” said Shael quietly.
“Almost”. Jackson turned back to his computer and punched a few keys. By now, the map had oriented itself on the University. A small, blinking red x stood out from the black and blue. Jackson pointed at it. “A security guard was found dead here, K-level, approximately 15 minutes ago. Two minutes later, a security camera on L-level caught this…” He tapped another key, and a small window in the corner grew. It showed a man walking down the hall. Jackson rewound it to the clearest frame. The man’s form was stooped, and he wore rough woolen clothes. His hair was mangy and unkempt; a think mat of stubble coated his face, framing his wild eyes. All told, his appearance resembled that of a drug addict. “We are almost positive it’s the missing Howler, but we don’t have a good enough image to run a face search”.
Shael leaned on Jackson’s console, peering into the face with his colorless eyes.
“It’s him”. Shael stood up. “It’s him” he repeated, quieter. Winry watched the tall, thin man’s hand twitch, as if he were grabbing something. The hand clenched into a fist, then open back up in recoil. A single drop of blood fell from his palm onto the floor.
Shael whipped around and stormed out of the room, his long white cloak billowing behind him. Jackson watched him go; staring at the doorway, then looked over at Winry.
“His emotions are getting the best of him…” He said softly. Winry met his gaze with her brilliant amethyst eyes.
   “He’s lost so much…”
“I know, but if he does something rash… you’d better get ready. Time is wasting.”

Shael already had his body armor on by the time Winry arrived in the equipment locker room. . He glanced up at her as she walked in, and then looked back down at the weapons rack. Winry stood framed in the doorway for a second. She shook her head in disgust. They couldn’t afford to waste anymore time.
She slipped off her loose robe, leaving her jet-black under suit on. She then put her own set of armor over it. The set was composed of a vest, upper and lower arms, and leggings, all made out of StopWeave, an advanced form of Kevlar. Winry heard the snap-click as Shael loaded a round into the chamber of his APS-76 sidearm. Neither of them made another move for a moment. Winry opened her mouth to say something, but Shael cut her off.
“Why, dammit…” Winry looked sideways at him as she put on her headset. He was shaking badly. Winry was speechless. Shael, crying? She stood up and put a hand on his shoulder. His shudders grew more violent, then died down. Winry held on for a few more seconds. Seeing he was fine for the moment, she reached into the locker, and loaded and holstered her own APS-76.
“I’m gonna kill him… I’m gonna make him pay… end this…”. He gulped and sat down on the bench, cradling his head in his hands. Winry could do nothing but stare into the locker, fiddling absently with her purple gloves. She was scared. Ever since she had met him, Shael had always been the calm and collected one. Now…
Shael took several deep breathes, as if clearing his head. Everything got quiet again. Winry did a final check of her equipment. They stood there for a second. After what seemed like a long time, Shael looked up, a steely glint in his eyes. “I’m gonna be OK” He said to Winry, trying to reassure her, but not meeting her eyes. He stood back up and reached into the locker. He pulled out a sword.
It looked like no ordinary sword. Its wicked blade gleamed crimson. The handle was wrapped in rags. Shael’s face reflected grimly off its shining blade. Without another word, he sheathed it, attached it to his belt, and stepped through a small metal door to the helipad, into the hot, muggy night. Winry was right behind him, shaken, but feeling a little better.

Two men in black uniforms stood in the hallway adjacent to the equipment room. They stood there as Shael and Winry exited to the helipad. One, older of the two, had a number of medals pinned to his chest.
“This is what you get for having children fight a war”.
His fellow was silent for a moment.
   “They’re all we have”.

Disclaimer: This rant is primarily for comedic purpouse, and so should not be taken as offensive in any way. However, the points made by the author are a twisted reflection of his original views.

Haiti.
Yeah... Ok, who even knew that country existed before that earthquake?
OK, now all of you that said yes, how many of you cared?
Honestly, I find it funny. I know that sounds twisted. But I do. Especially since the second the Chile earthquake happened, the majority of the country forgot and moved on to the newest spectacle.
"Haiti, what's Haiti? Wait, I cared yesterday?"
No, deep down, you didn't.
However, Chile is a far better thing to care about then Haiti. Chile at least makes food and crap to sell to us.
Haiti?
When that earthquake hit, Haiti went from a bunch of illiterates that farmed rocks, sat around all day and ate mud to a bunch of homeless illiterates that farm rocks, sit around all day, and eat mud. Is that really such a big loss?
And you know what the worse part is?
Now because helping Haiti is the next 'I'm a good person since I drive a Prius', we are locked into an unspoken agreement. We are giving them ****. And for what? You think we can stop after a couple months? Years? No. We are now, unless some serious **** changes, forced to babysit Haiti forever. They have no natural resources, nothing. All they have now is our aid. And when that goes, they're just gonna come back to us begging.
I realize this is really heartless, and that I'm stereotyping a bunch of Haitians like I'm part of the KKK. I don't know if it's just cuz I'm too damn lazy to give a ****, and I don't want to waste my time giving a **** about a bunch of brown people stuck on some worthless island by a bunch of smelly French people back in the 1600s.
Which brings me to my final point. You all want to know who to really blame for this mess?

The French.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Wow. I love the part where you validate Chile's existence because they make "food and crap to sell" to you.   Is that the measurement of worth for a country? Its GDP? Haiti doesn't make enough cheap plastic sh*t for you to buy, so they haven't the right to exist? It's true that they have been relying on handouts since the earthquake. I'm sure that curbs innovation and consumer consumption and entrepreneurial wheelings-and-dealings and whatever. But have you thought about why Haiti is in such desperate need in the first place? The earthquake was just a catalyst for a mess waiting to happen. By ignoring Haiti up until the earthquake, developed nations were setting up this entire incident.

When you have enough food and it's not hard to get a job, its very easy to assume that everyone is like you. That's the myth of meritocracy. Some people are set up to fail no matter how hard they work. You could be smart, creative, and a really hard worker, but if you're born into circumstances that prevent you from benefitting from your work, you're f*cked. Sometimes it isn't enough to be a good worker. Sometimes you have to be white, or male, or born in a different country. So don't assume that Haiti is a bunch of lazy people who rely on hand-outs.

And lay off the french-bashing. There's nothing worse than a bigot.

bobbtman, I apologize for any actual offense you might have taken to that. And, to be honest, you bring up several good points I didn't consider. My rant was more to bash the prius/haiti people as opposed to actually helping haiti. Also, it was a very uninformed rant based almost entirely on what my republican/redneck/good ole boy neighbour said.

EDIT: HAHAHA... I'm making excuses like the whiney little ***** I am

Titan: Forgive and forget. I probably would have agreed with you when I was your age too. I'm glad you took into consideration what I said. And for what it's worth, I agree with you that there does seem to be a bandwagon going around, both for the prius pseudo-environmentalist and the save Haiti groups.

Aardwolf: What are you saying? His rant was satirical? He mentions that the rant is a twisted version of his original views. That doesn't mean much, does it? Twisted can mean a lot of things, but it usually doesn't mean what he's saying is the opposite of what he believes.

General Battuta: Titan is both old enough and smart enough to engage in debate. If you respect him, don't shrug him off as just being a kid.

That's Nathan in the back, still drawing him as a racoon since he's been too lazy to figure out his own avatar. Suffice to say it won't be a racoon.

A doodle of an Armored Core that I did in my engineer's notebook. Only two components are canonical, the core and the rocket laucnher on the AC's back. This AC is sortof my dream setup in Armored Core 3/Silent Line.
I seriously plan to ink this, but first I'll make something explaining the different components.

Blade Fan was co-designed by me and Nathan.

Headphones where I'm from, but I've heard people call them earphones. That's the problem with ears like that - you can't wear around ears headphones.

Yes, it's for a girl. And the ball is sleeping. Don't ask. I was trying to think of something to add to the ball to give 'life' to it, since it was the object of attention for her character. I just randomly doodled some zzZZs over it, and forgot to remove them before I updated it to show her the progress. She said she liked it, so here I am.

Wacom touch? Sounds nice.

I'm really happy with how that drawing turned out. I tried to use a lot more shadow (not for the darkness, that's just a semi-transperent black layer over the foreground) to make everything more realistic, and I think it worked. I like that style, which, through it's mediocrity, has become something all my own. It looks like it was made on a computer with solid paintbrushes in PS, but keeps a very clean appearance.

Also, I *believe* that's the first instance of a backround in one of my drawings, or at least one that I spent any sort of time on. The one in silent night (WAAAAAY back. It was, loik, the 3rd thing I ever inked, back when I only had Sky; no imp or 'sona) doesn't really count, since I just made a black backround and put a white spot for the moon. I actually spent a lot of time on that, at least compared to the rest of the drawing. Out of the hour or so it took me to ink, the backround took up around 15 mins, which is a lot considering the rest of the work. In addition to the detail on the moon and comet, you'll notice the milky way (diagonal light blotch from middle left to upper right) and a bright horizon (which I killed with the turbo blur, so now it isn't actually the horizon). Also (I love this part), the stars are ACCURATE to the night sky.

...

... did I get anybody with that? No?

:sigh:

Two game design assignments. First was made in 5 class periods with the Flash crashing every 10 minutes. Second one is the same assignment, but I only had 2 class periods to do it and I threw in a sketchy download of the Mortal Kombat theme.

Our first assignment with variables; I had one of my buddies who prefers the programming side walk me through how to code it, since I'd spent the entire demonstration drawing it, and so had no idea what I was supposed to be doing.

My final game design assignment in Flash is on its way! And since it needs to be graded, it WILL get finished. This is the first (and only, which pisses me off) real game we're making in Flash before we switch to working with Unity & Blender. I had to write a 3-5 paragraph story and do concept sketches for everything. I haven't gotten the concept sketches scanned, but I *do* have the story, which in my case wound up being a page and a half. I tried to include as many stereotypes and pop-culture references as possible.

History is filled with extraordinary events, pushed forth by extraordinary people. The Battle of Britain. The Roman Empire, or that of Alexander the Great. However, once of the greatest, yet the least well known, is that of a group of farmers, in 1976.
Farmingtonfieldville was always a quiet town. The closest highway exit, I-69, was never used, since most people who saw the name and number on the exit sign thought it was a joke. The population at the time was a little under 500 in the town proper, with another hundred or so farmers spread around the valley. Time moved slowly for the people of Farmingtonfieldville, dictated by the seasons and the harvest. When not working, they spent their time at the Irish pub, called O’McFlinney’s. They all drove beat-up pickup trucks, and wore jeans and straw hats. It was a time of peace.
And then came the summer of 1976.
It began peaceful, with plenty of rain in the spring, then pleasant sunshine through June. It was expected to be a record harvest. On the last day of June, they all gathered in the middle of town for the annual Summer Picnic. Live banjo music and blueberry pie was aplenty, and the mood was light and festive.
   Then they came.
A single object came hurtling out of the sky into the valley. It was perhaps 10 meters across, shaped like a silver pancake, with a ring of lights around the middle and a glass dome on top, it swept over the heads of the people of Farmingtonfieldville. They watched in fear as it stopped above the barn of Farmer Murphy, and a cone of bright blue rings travelled down to the barn. They then sucked back up, with Murphy’s cows in tow. When they were inside, the cone disappeared, and the ship shot off into the night. Unfortunately, all the people were drunk, and so it was only a dim memory.
Until the next night.
The next night they came to Farmer Brown’s barn. He awoke with the light of the rings coming through his blinds. For an old man, he reacted quickly. Shotgun in hand, he sprinted out and unloaded both barrels at the ship as his cows began to ascend. For his trouble, the ship responded by dropping his prized county fair winning cow Meatloaf on him. Mrs. Brown awoke in the morning to find her husband buried under 1300 pounds of beef.
That day they called the police. Only, this was the first interesting thing that had ever happened in Farmingtonfieldville, so they didn’t need a police department. So they didn’t have one. And then they tried the military. But they thought it was a joke. So then they went on Oprah, which got a little attention, but not enough. So then they went on Twitter, Facebook, Good Morning America, the whole deal. But nobody cared, since it was Farmingtonfieldville, and nobody cares about Farmingtonfieldville.
That night a meeting was called in Farmer Murphy’s barn. The town’s farmers came, dressed in coveralls and straw hats. A single oil lamp illuminated the barn, casting black flickering shadows across their faces. The mood was sober. A slight wind whistled ghostly through the empty stalls. A grizzled old man, of course wearing denim overalls and a straw hat, stepped forward. He was Old Farmer Fred, the oldest and most experienced one there. His five o’clock shadow flickered in the light of the lantern, since an unshaven face makes him seem cooler.
“I bet you’re wondering why you’re all here.” The assembled men nodded, for speaking would have broken the epic somberness of the scene. “Dem aliens wants our cattle.” Growled the old guy. Again, nodding. “Well, if they wants them so bad, then let’s give ‘em to ‘em. The hard way!” He finished, climaxing into a passionate yell. Cheers broke out amongst the men, who suddenly turned quiet; surprised by the sudden arrival of a heroic John Williams score out of nowhere. “Heres whats we’re gonna do.” Said the elder. They all gathered close to the lamp to here his plan.
Their wives gathered in Murphy’s house. Through the night they heard the sounds of yells and orders, saws and hammers. Several loud booms were heard that night as trees were cut down. By morning the men were ready. The remaining cows were gathered in Murphy’s barn for use as ammunition.
The Battle of Farmingtonfieldville would be won or lost that day.

And here's a test animation with a phoned in backround:

http://9223titan.deviantart.com/?loggedin=1#/d350ow2

the only thing final is the catapult. I duplicated the finished animated symbol and then put in a cow that flies in an arc.

Work in progress essay for English. So far we've read Lord of the Flies, Night, and Animal Farm. The assignment: According to Weisel, Orwell, and Golding (the 3 authors), what lies in the human heart? You must assume that the person reading your essay is not only the devil's advocate, but is also ignorant and has no idea what you're talking about. This is the 3rd revision, I'm just going back and tying the books in more. Still working on it, but I noticed something: We're supposed to try and persuade the reader to our point, and they're supposed to flat out deny everything we say. My response to that opposition? Give ground. Seriously, I constantly remind them that it is my beliefs and opinions, despite that my teacher tells us that it is not supposed to be our opinions, it is to be considered FACT.

I'm really excited though, since he went over an earlier revision with me and really like it. He said I'm his only student to have a distinctive writing style. Bastard's buttering me up, but I still can't get over it since I'm a narcisstic histrionic prick  :P

Iunno, I'm just putting it up to see if you guys can offer anything.

‘Shades of Gray’

I’m an existentialist. I don’t know what you are, but I’m an existentialist. I wouldn’t exactly call myself an atheist, seeing as I don’t deny that God or Gods exist, it’s just that I don’t believe in them personally. I don’t look to some higher power to find meaning in life, since I feel I have my hands full down here. If I’m going to spend all this time here, I might as well focus on what I’m doing now, and worry about an afterlife when I get to it. But hey, if you find some sort of purpose or comfort in a higher power, more power to you. Since I don’t have a higher power to answer things for me, I explain things with reasoning and logic, as viewed through the lens of my beliefs.

What are my beliefs? That’s simple. Contrary to everything we’re taught, contrary to the books we have read so far this year in English, there’s no such thing as good and evil. Good and evil, to me, are figments of one’s imagination. There is no universal definition of evil or good, there’s only your own.

So far this year, we’ve read three books. Night by Elie Weisel, Animal Farm by George Orwell, who still scares the crap out of me with 1984, and William Golding, author of Lord of the Flies. Night was the memoir of Elie Weisel, who is Jewish, and told the story of his time in a concentration camp during World War 2. Animal Farm is pinpoint allegory of the Bolshevik Revolution, telling a disturbingly frank and truthful view through a group of animals on a farm. Everything in the book is exactly the same as the real life events except in name. Finally, Lord of the Flies is about a group of boys who get stranded on a deserted island following a plane crash. With no civilization to guide them, they quickly degenerate into savages, and several wind up being killed before they can be rescued. With that obligatory explanation out of the way, let’s continue.

These books steadfastly maintain that people are inherently evil. I honestly don’t agree with that. On an emotional level, people can be very bad indeed. Take Lord of the Flies, for instance. At the end of the book, only a single character, Ralph, the protagonist, shows remorse for what’s happened. In the few days preceding the end, two of his friends were brutally murdered by the dominate force on the island, a group of choir boys led by a malevolent kid named Jack. Ralph spends the last day on the island being chased by Jack’s band of savages, who burn down the island trying to root out Ralph. What did Ralph do to deserve such treatment? He tried to be a leader, which made Jack’s ego go nuts. That’s it. At no point in the book did Ralph make a bad decision, except maybe giving Jack a long enough leash to take control. So, it’s easy to see where Wiesel, Orwell and Golding are coming from. Based on their writings, it certainly appears that humans are, above all, inhumane. But looked at pragmatically, they make a lot more sense.

My personal understanding and belief of humans is that we don’t start with a blank slate. We’ve already got a lot of stuff jammed into our heads. We start with our instincts, and they’re the same for everyone. People who believe in the teachings of Sigmund Freud call it ‘Id’. It is this, the ‘Id’, which contains the ‘evil’ that Wiesel, Orwell and Golding wrote about. It was described in the notes on Lord of the Flies as “the anarchic, amoral, driving force … whose only function seems to be to insure the survival of the host...” As bad as that sounds, it’s pretty much bang on the mark, or at least that last bit. ‘Insure the survival of the host’ makes it sound like a parasite, doesn’t it? A parasite created in our heads when we’re born, one that we can’t remove. Put like that, it makes what Misters W, O, and G say seem like a pretty good point of view.

Before you make a decision, let’s look at the animal kingdom for a moment. Parasites aren’t always bad. For example, the bacteria in your intestines (I’m connecting this to my biology class now) produces Vitamin B12. Not only are these bacteria helpful, they’re absolutely necessary for human life. When my sister found out that she has bacteria inside her, she freaked out. She’s afraid of bugs. However, if she didn’t have them, she’d die.

The ‘Id’ is just like the vitamin bacteria. “… Insure the survival of the host…” Without it, we wouldn’t breath, wouldn’t digest our food, wouldn’t do anything. Beyond that, it contains our basic thoughts. People think that the thing that separates us from animals is our ability to be civilized. Wrong. What makes us people is the ability to learn. We start out like any other animal, with all our instincts present. The difference is how we learn. Animals, at the most basic level, react to outside input in terms of ‘good stuff’ and ‘bad stuff’. If you’ve ever seen, for instance, a trained dolphin, you’ll notice that every time the dolphin performs a trick, it gets a fish. It’s been conditioned to know that by reacting to the sounds coming out of the trainer in a specific way, it gets food. People are different. We still think of things in terms of good and bad, we still learn that way too. But animals have a single track mind. They can only see ‘good thing me now’ or ‘bad thing me now’. People are capable of thinking not only farther ahead, to the long term consequences, but also laterally, to how it affects others, and *not done with this paragraph yet*

These two entities, the Id and the conscious, are inherently at war. People think that the other thing separating us from animals is our ability to think and reason. Again, wrong. Animals are perfectly capable of thinking and reasoning. However, as humans we also possess the ability to have emotions. The Id is mechanical. It single-mindedly serves its purpose of preserving the individual. Our conscious, our civilization, is the one tempered by emotions, and in turn, tempers the Id. Neither one is the stronger of the two; they work together as a team to process information and decide how to react. The problems that Misters W, O and G talk about come from when the conscious fails to properly keep the Id in check.

Simply put, however, there is no such thing as good or evil. It’s all in our head, specifically, our conscious. We are conditioned to think of it as a bad thing if the Id ever comes to a forefront. From the perspective of our humanity, our conscious, that is rightly so. When the Id calls the shots, things tend to go wrong. People can get hurt. That’s the central idea of Night, Animal Farm, and Lord of the Flies. Again, ‘… insure survival of the host…’ The Id has no concern for others, except perhaps on a sexual level. In taking control, we lose our respect for other people. In fact, the entire plot of Night is the degeneration of Elie Wiesel, as his conscious is ripped apart, allowing his Id to increasingly take control.

The Germans used the minds of their prisoners against them. They purposefully malnourished and overworked the Jews, causing the basic needs housed within the Id to grow louder. At the same time, they also did everything they could to take away their identity, their humanity. Taking away their valuables, their clothes, even their names were all meant to dehumanize them. At the basic level, they strengthened the Id and weakened the conscious. The Germans did their best to create a giant vacuum to suck out the human emotion of the prisoners and turn them into automatons.

The conscious naturally tries to defend itself, faced with such a situation. It withdraws farther back into the mind, one bit at a time. This gives the Id a chance. You see the friendship between the conscious and Id is a bit of an uneasy one. The Id takes every opportunity to gain control. It makes sense; without that wuss of a conscious in the way, it can act solely for its own interests.

In Night, the reader watches the constant struggle between Elie’s conscious humanity and animalistic Id. In the end, it is the Id that calls the shots; the conscious can only temper it. It is this tenuous grasp on humanity that Elie struggles to keep in face of the German’s tactics. The turning point comes when his father falls sick. At that point, he is faced with a decision: should he fruitlessly hold on to his father, even though nothing can be done to save him? Or does he cut his losses and abandon his dad, saving valuable food and energy for himself. Elie decided to stay with his father until the end, and only after his father was gone, along with everything else he’d ever cared about, did his humanity give in.

Personally, I think he made the right decision. My opinions (read: OPINIONS) stated in this essay may come across as cold and pragmatic at their best, heartless and ruthless at worst. I do not believe I am heartless or ruthless. I value human life, and humanity, above all else. In our exercise with the human resource officer and the people in the bunker, I kept people based solely on their humanity, and what they had done. I valued who they were as people far more then their possible usefulness in a post-nuclear world. I would much rather give people I consider good a chance then give it to those who continually do wrong. You could say I’m a little naïve like that. Maybe I am. My views stem from my ability to pragmatically look inside myself, and to accept what I find as limitations and assets. What I wrote in this essay is what I found; it is my understanding of myself, and possibly the people around me. The things I found contained much of what we consider bad, and it is the same bad that Wiesel, Orwell and Golding found. However, upon examination of their writings, one thing is clear: They, like me, found good along with the bad. Their writings highlight the bad, the ‘evil’. That is because that’s what they wanted to talk about. But throughout it all, there is also good. Nothing can truly destroy one’s conscious, nor one’s Id. They maintain a balance. People are not black and white. They are gray.

Wiesel, Orwell and Golding found things in the human heart, things that people hide and ignore, out of shame and fear. However, they, like me, also found a beacon. No matter how dark the human heart becomes, there will always be a beacon to light it.

This is high school, right? There are a few assertions in it that I feel need to be backed up, but in high school I don't think it matters too much.

I guess that my biggest criticism is that you don't relate your argument(s) enough to the stories your referencing. You make many of statements, but don't explain how they relate to each story. You could probably fix this by finding the important point of each paragraph, and then in your analysis include examples from the book illustrating your point.

You could also narrow the focus of your thesis. This essay feels like a casual article written for a magazine, which is cool. Still, it could use a formal intoduction. It may feel simplistic, summing upwhat your essay, but it helps the reader. It lets the reader know what your arguments are leading up to, rather than try having to figure it out on the go. It also will help you decide what elements to cut from your essay. Your conclusion was a nice summation of your essay, so just paraphrase it in the intro. Then, go through each paragraph in your essay and decide: does this further my point, or is it a tangeant? I agree with the conclusion you drew from your readings, but your argument could afford to be more precise and to the point.

You could consider the precision with your vocabulary as well. In your description of Animal Farm you use the description of "pinpoint". Perhaps the word "poignant" would be a more accurate description of a piece of fiction. Also, I'm not sure about the word "insure" in paragraph concerning ID. Would "ensure" be a better word? A writer doesn't just write words, he carefully chooses them.

Other than that, it's a good start to a career in writing, assuming that's what you hope to do with yourself. Your writing voice is confident and full of personality. I appreciate the casual feel of your writing. It makes it the essay approachable. I think that as long as you don't get too attached to your style, you'll produce some great essays in the future.

Last pre-release of my extremely crappy flash project I'm making for school, as my final on Flash-based design. I've been working on this 40 minutes a day since November, and frankly.... all that time went into a black hole of absolute balls. But I'm gonna shove it in your faces anyways, so that I feel better about myself.

This was uploaded just before I got the code working for the alien to respawn, so... yeah.

Midterms this week, after which I have 400 minutes to add in: opening with the story posted here a page or so back, the main menu, controls screen, credits screen, semi-balanced game, score screen, AND clean up the graphics (the cow and background are unfinished, as it the main menu).

I wanted a cool spray for TF2, and so I drew myself as my primary class. Guess what? I play medic. Why? Because MEDIC IS BEAST, and if you think otherwise, try taking a full Blutsauger magazine to the face just like the last scout who tried to rush me.

There's a number of artistic liberties taken with the costume, due to a combination of me not liking certain parts of the medic's outfit, notably the rubber gloves; me not having a reference pic of the medic, notably, I thought he had a shirt on under his open trenchcoat, but I didn't know what it looked like, so I didn't draw one; or me not being able to draw worth a ****, notably, that I couldn't draw his arms in a way that would hold the medigun in the correct position, IE, handle on top, pistol-grip-thing on bottom, so I put a handle on the side instead.

Definitely gonna ink this when I get the time.

Ha ha! That's good! And very notable.

Heh, awesome.  I like the scar.

Artistically it's very good, though I'll admit to not being a fan of the subject matter, the picture itself is well drawn and coloured.

The only this I'm not happy about is the right side of his face (his right). It looked good on paper, I couldn't get it to look right on the picture. I'll probably try to fix it tommorow and will reupload with the results.

I see the difference, his eye bulges out too far in the color one, removing where it indents to define the... jaw?  what would that particular part of the face just below the eye be?

Heheh. I'm still not dead, not that anyone noticed  :D

I'm really excited with this thing I made for game design. Right now I'm working on the character's armature so that he had arms and the gun isn't just floating.

Oh, and the hideous seam on the stock is kind of there on purpose- I figured that's the spot a player is least likely to see.

That gun model as a mesh really needs a lot of work and refinement before it can be considered well modeled.  The design itself, eeehh, not a fan.

Fair enough. Mind taking a moment to point out what's wrong with the mesh?

Roger that.

There are no smooth groups at all, for one. Another is the mesh work itself is very, very messy. Especially at the front, in front of the grip and behind the barrel. From what I can tell, it's fairly high-poly (around 5000 polygons?) which is a bit much for the small amount detailing it has. About the design itself, it's really cartoony. I'm not sure if you want it to be cartoony or not, but there you go. Reason is because of the proportions, I think. Also, at the top, under the ironsight, it has a hard edge while in front of that part, the top curves down into the side, which is weird.

Sweet, thanks for the input.

I'm not entirely sure how many poly's it has. I would have preferred to use normal maps in a few places, namely the wood thing on the top, but I didn't. No real excuse for that, I just wound up modelling it instead of learning how to normal map. And yes, the front part is very messy, partly because of Blender's overzealous creation of vertices during subdividing the surfaces, and largely because of my overzealous attempts to simplify the model after that modifier was applied.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by smooth groups. The reason that there's little smoothness is that I didn't want to deal with all the extra vertices that Blender makes with subsurface modifying, which was how we were taught to smooth. I spent hours cleaning it up after I applied the lowest setting.

As for the cartoony-ness, yes, I wanted it to look a bit like some guns I've seen in mangas, since the game I was making was going to be a stylized alternate reality depiction of WW2. This was sort of based on the Thompson. The primary problem I think you're talking about is that the barrel/muzzle are massive, and the muzzle is rather fluted at the end. Yeah, that was intentional. The weird thing on the rear sight is indeed weird, and I'm not entirely sure why it looks like that.

Again, thanks for the input. I was going to keep working on it over the summer, so it's ready to be used when I take Game Design again next year. Thankfully, it's going to be all 3D stuff, no dealing with trying to make Flash projects on Macs.

First, booleans can be very useful if you know what you're doing. I posted a very simple tutorial a while back, as seen here:

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=74683.msg1476458#msg1476458

For precision work, I distrust automatic reducer functions. Do that by hand. Quads are also a good thing to model in for most purposes.

Next, I dislike the term "smooth groups." "Shading" or "lighting" is a more global term (eg "flat" or "smooth" shading), and I wish more programs strived to use standard terminology. For instance, you'd think "revolve" would be a universal operation function, yet Silo will call this "lathe." Lighting/shading of course affects how a polygon appears visually at any given angle, as well as how it appears in relation to adjacent polygons. I've never done much work with lighting in more full-featured programs such as Blender, so I can't relate to you how to modify your model's appearance in this regard, apart from tweaking the actual geometry itself. Keep in mind that lighting/shading is, with the exception of flat shading, closely related to how the geometry of the model itself lays.

It looks far from finished, mate. I don't even think he's finished with the basic design.

I'd recommend angling the grip about 45 degrees. That kind of grip is just plain uncomfortable, and you'd want to elongate the bolt some. Looks like you can barely hold it.

Is THAT how you were taught to smooth? Ugh. Tell your teacher he/she's a n00b. No, select the model, and look for a button "Set Smooth" in the Link and Materials panel (editing tab) in 2.49, or press the "Shading: Smooth" button on the left of the 3D view in 2.5. Then add an edgesplit modifier.

He's said it was finished, bro. Plus it's better to get criticism on stuff like this early on rather than later, it's harder to change the closer you are to finished.

The version I posted was the one I had to include in the final project. To be fair to the teacher, he was learning things at the same time we were. Then again, he couldn't have bothered to do it beforehand.

Biggest advice I have is to try some low-poly modeling first and use some quick orthos of the gun, as good reference makes model flow a lot easier.
