Title: Request for pin
Post by: Charismatic on January 14, 2012, 08:17:09 pm
Please don't flame; i have looked in several recent topics and have found no answers.

Can someone please provide me with an explanation of what happened to BWO, as its archived.
I heard it was more or less canceled and now its in storage (archives). I also heard that they released everything (models etc) and that was that---but no confirmation via recent threads yet.

If so cant we play the unfinished BWO campaign without voice acting and newest models?

Also, I request someone create and pin a 'official explanation' topic, so everyone is on the same page and wont have to make a new topic in a archived section again.

Thanks.

Machina Terra is the campaign you're thinking of; BWO hasn't been officially canceled. As far as I know, it was just archived because the admins didn't feel there was enough recent activity to warrant it being listed in the partially released/WIP section of the board. There's been no change in the project's status and objectives.

Yeah, the mod that died and spewed its assets was MT. BWO is caught in MOD DRAMA (the best type of drama).

Well, you see, the statement that it was "ready for release" years ago was pretty much because FSO back then didn't catch modpack errors anywhere near as well as it does now. There were apparently a fair number of bugs, which needed to be fixed too before its really playable. Apparently the old models weren't bug-free either, so instead of fixing up old outdated models why not make new ones, since we're partway through that anyway.

Or so the line of thought goes.

I have no idea why BWO is archived. There are "active" projects with far less activity on the internal. Namely AG and WoD. AG is headless, and WoD hasn't had a post in internal since a month ago, and the last post before that one were from the beginning of November (though it definitely is progressing, just that everyone discusses stuff on IRC instead of on the forums). Clearly, that was not the reason why BWO was archived.

From what I can gather at scouring internal threads there's some drama going on between Goober, Admiral Nelson, and BlackDove over who "owns" the mod and such. "Creative differences" or so to speak.

Actually, I better shut up cause I have no idea what is going on despite having complete internal access.

Why am I even talking.

Good question.

I'll differ the explanations to Blackdove, although what Droid said is pretty much accurate.

But I can safely tell you that BWO is not dead, nor we released our assets. Like others have mentioned, that was Machina Terra.

The drama isn't over who "owns" the mod.  If Admiral Nelson or I thought we owned it, we'd start our own duplicate project or we'd dump the assets in the public forum.  We haven't done either.

Also, don't confuse activity with progress.

Actually, I think that the reason is lack of activity in public forum. Other mods, like WoD, are discussed much more than BWO. It seems that an admin went over the project boards and archived those that didn't had any recent public activity.

That's an odd thing to say, considering you have access to internal.

Well, the public forum had been quiet lately, internal is reasonably active (though not the kind of activity I'd be most happy to see).
Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to have BWO restored to active projects board. There's no reason to archive it.

Ok, thanks for the info and corrections. Seems that rumor was bad, and its good to know its not true.

Sorry for the mix up.

New courses of action have been explored, and are being put into effect.
