Title: A Freespace based Browsergame (ingame Language is german)
Post by: JakobIV on June 30, 2014, 10:22:57 am
Guess many of you guys thought about a browsergame based on freespace.
As i searched for it in the Forums, i found some projects, but they never got realised.
But there is such a browsergame, its called Drifting Souls 2.

http://ds.drifting-souls.net/ds2j/ (http://ds.drifting-souls.net/ds2j/)

It is a pretty unique Browsergame, with some rly interesting features:
-it is more than 10 years old, and since then it's running without a reset.
-roundbased with a unique way to fight in battles (you can tell every ship on which target it has to fire, and what weapon it shall use for it)
-the gameplay is a mix between commanding your own civilisation and writing RPG.
-the players write the story of the game, and they may even have influence on the game development.
-it is totally fanmade, and the current team is composed of players.
-it has a small, nearly family like community, but new players are allways welcome, and get integrated rather fast, especially if they show up in our IRC channel.

Ofc Drifting Souls has its downsided, especially for new players:
-it is pretty slow, and building up your empire takes a lot of time, where you wont do much except waiting for money and ress (but this is only a problem if you want to do it all by yourself, alliances help you a lot shortening that time, and even without them, if you are in the IRC you will get help from the older players)
-as i said, the community is pretty small, and this may result in low action (but its getting better, this month there was a new reccord in new players for Drifting Souls)
-the language of the game is german (as this is an english speaking community, i consider it a downside)

The current team is working on hard for the game, and there are some really interesting features in work.

I hope i can reach some people out there, searching for a freespace based browsergame.

But my english isn't good enough to describe the game in all its facetes, so if you are interested you may consider coming to our IRC Channel either by using this link:

http://webchat.euirc.net/

Channel: #ds2

or just connecting to it via another IRC programm.

The home page looks pretty solid, but I can't speak any German. Make sure to let your developers know that they did a good job.  It's hard for something to last ten years.

Whoa, everyone, you've just got to check out these pictures:

http://www.drifting-souls.net/home/index.php?id=4

There's more than that in the gallery BTW.

That is so gloriously awesome. I especially love the one with that Orion model on the table.

I would have definitely checked this thing out seriously if I could speak German.

You know that you need to take a look on the DS2-Screen gallery to see pictures of the actual gameplay.

The game it's very menu orientated and the start up phase is tenacious.

I played it several years ago but i wasn't patient enough, but nowadays i trhink it can make fun.

Maybe someone should translate it, would help to bring more people in.

It's not as easy as it sounds.
Especially with a small, exclusively German community and a likewise exclusively voluntary development team.
But thanks for your answer / opinion.

Novachen often does translation projects, even for very text-heavy stuff like BTA, you might want to PM her.

Drifting Souls 2 is not an ordinary "mathematical" construction and management simulation like OGame or Ikariam. It has a huge writing role-playing game in which players have been participating for several years. It takes place exclusively in German and would not work multilingual, just because not all players would be able to speak both languages. This would disrupt the roleplay communication significantly.

Maybe here are some German speakers, who want to try it. :)
Or maybe here are some guys trying to learn German. :P
We have a very kind player base and I think the getting in to the game would be easily.

(sorry for my bad English)

I massively support interlingual exchange.  👍👍👍

Except vasudans...... Burn the lot 😂

Oh, you would perfectly match to the ingame alliance Neo Terranischer Bund (engl.: Neo Terran Federation). They are associated with the Neo-Terran Front (an ingame NPC fraction) and hate Vasudans.

btw we also have an Discord server: https://discord.gg/cpxxAGy
many of us speak also English, if someone with rather rudimentary knowledge of the German language needs help

My German is terrible but better than my French.

I'll check out your kind link. 👍👍
But I won't post if I feel overwhelmed by the linguistic barrier.

Edit-
Link in your first post failed on my mobile chrome browser, is there a minimum requirement?

Thanks a lot!
Some ships were added by us later. The GTCa Kottos (the ship in the picture) is a Special-Ops carrier with a small hangar capacity, but good propulsion and good hiding abilities.

But you will also find many well known freespace space ships. :)

Hey guys,

the development of Drifting Souls 2 has progressed massively in the last few months. That's why I would like to point out once again our (exclusively German language) browser game.
We now have improved combat and trading systems as well as a whole new way of operating, mining.  There are new and newly weighted spaceships, extended in-game tutorials and all in all the game entry was made easier.

We have a lot of other plans that we want to implement in the next days, weeks and months. We invite everyone to try out our browser game based on the narration of freespace computer games. Our community is happy to help you with advice and support, both when it comes to game-related things and if you are perhaps not a native German speaker. Try it out and give Drifting Souls 2 a chance! Just a reminder: Our game is 100% free and contains no paid content or advertising.

On this way we would like to say that we would be happy to welcome new developers, designers, graphic artists or other voluntary supporters at any time.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me here!

PS: Sorry for my bad English!

Do you have any plans for expanding the user base by making an english interface atleast?
Title: Re: A Freespace based Browsergame (ingame Language is german) (Browserspiel)
Post by: WeilArvaFaulIst on August 09, 2020, 07:34:50 am
Hello,

no, currently we do not have these plans, because the demand for them is simply too small. Besides, a multilingual "writing RPG" like the one we have in our game might be rather counterproductive.

Nevertheless, I don't want to rule out a multilingual interface, at least if there is a bigger demand. I could also imagine that this could work with an add-on or a mod.

But now I will ask our developers about this topic.

Our developers are currently investigating the possibility of implementing an in-game translation feature.
I will contact you if such an implementation is feasible or planned.

Until then, I can recommend browser add-ons, e.g. this one:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/traduzir-paginas-web/?src=search

These add-ons conveniently translate the game to any language. Thus it is playable even for native English speakers.

We have explained here how and to what extent you can play Drifting Souls in other languages::

(This wiki article is written in English, too!)

If there is enough demand, we will probably translate more wiki tutorials as well.

A lot has changed - and in a short time!

After the Vasudan Empire destroyed an outpost of the Galactic Terran-Vasudan Republic and the Neo-Terran Front launched an attack on the Republic's main planet, Thatrel, the Republic fought back:

In a massive attack, the former home worlds of the Neo-Terrans and the Vasudan Empire were conquered by the Republic. Since then, the Neo-Terrans and the Empire have new headquarters in the star system Rho Carinae.

At the same time several new jump nodes were discovered, which seem to lead to several new star systems. Large alliances as well as small settlers have already started exploring and are now starting their colonization.

Take advantage of this favourable moment, get into your spaceship and join the browser game "Drifting Souls 2"!

Reminds me of Space Federation - Galactic Conquest. Though I have to admit the fully German interface would be problematic for it to be used.

Yes, the basic language of our game is German. However, we have written a tutorial on how to play the game in English (https://drifting-souls.fandom.com/de/wiki/Drifting_Souls_2_auf_anderen_Sprachen_spielen_%5C_Drifting_Souls_2_in_other_languages#English_.2F_Englisch).

This is not complicated at all, as you might think at first sight. If the demand for an English translation is higher, we can also think about a game-integrated translation. However, since we are a small indie team, we first want to see if there is enough interest to make the effort worthwhile.

The fact is, you can still play the game in English with the tutorial (https://drifting-souls.fandom.com/de/wiki/Drifting_Souls_2_auf_anderen_Sprachen_spielen_%5C_Drifting_Souls_2_in_other_languages#English_.2F_Englisch), and if you have any questions or problems, our community will be there to help. :)

Hello folks,

we are still there and we are constantly developing our game. In the distant future we have an immense overhaul of the combat system coming up, in the short term you can look forward to our Christmas event.
Maybe some of you would like to go into space during the cold season to build a new star empire from a barren asteroid. Jump into the 100% free* browser game Drifting Souls 2!  Terran or Vasudan?

* Yes, you won't find a single way to spend money on us. We are a team of volunteers only. We are a pure team of volunteers and instead of money we are happy to have new players!

Hello people!  :D

In order to make it easier for English or non-German speaking players to participate in Drifting Souls 2, we have started an English wiki, which is still under development. Nevertheless, it already has a good base of articles.

I would like to point out once again that Drifting Souls 2 is a browser game. Although it is not originally available in English, many browsers (e.g. Google Chrome) offer built-in translation software or allow translation add-ons (e.g. Mozilla).

With these it is relatively easy to participate in the game even without knowledge of German. In addition, our community is available for help and advice.

The English Drifting Souls Wiki can be found at this link: https://drifting-souls.fandom.com/wiki/Drifting_Souls_Wiki
A short tutorial for translating the game can be found there: https://drifting-souls.fandom.com/wiki/Drifting_Souls_2_in_English.
