The earth 27 gives it away a bit, because supposedly they keep going into different parallel universes, with different earths..
And the middle of the ship on the right looks like the spinning bit on that earth ship.

I think I actually managed to save a few of them once and not fail the mission, at least on retail FS1, but when Command seemed to care less about my extraordinary efforts, I decided to sod off in the future.

I always found that mission very, very, very stupid.

Yeah, that always got me too.  I think the exact line was something like, "Congratulations on your first mission working with the Vasudans, pilot!"  Yeah...real success story there.
