2) The name. While, yes, it's already a popular name for other models/ships, it's also fairly well-used elsewhere in recent times, and it kind of takes away from the originality of the model.
Entirely irrelevant. It doesn't matter if the name is used once or a million times. It can be renamed by the modder. Nor is it only limited to FreeSpace, which you have noted. As a modding community, we should accept and welcome models of all sorts. Discriminating based on a name is arrogant and short-sighted.

Get off your high horse, he was only suggesting that the name be changed to something more distinctive.
The good Christian should beware of mathematicians, and all those who make empty prophecies. The danger already exists that the mathematicians have made a covenant with the devil to darken the spirit and to confine man in the bonds of Hell.

If originality is based on a name then no one on this planet is original. I chose the name based solely on the fact that I liked it and no other reason. I have a list of names for other models that I'm working on I hope they will be more original for everyone, but since so many people are talking about the name then maybe its the right one.

You know, it actually looks a little bit like a next gen UEF ship to me. Like a Raynor crossed with a Sanctus. Could totally do it with the model modified slightly and a different skinjob. UEF Corvette or something.

Anyway, I'm curious as to how you made the textures in GIMP, particularly the scratchy layer. You got a tutorial laying around to link?

I don't have a tutorial but one of my favorite is here: http://www.game-artist.net/forums/spotlight-articles/42-tutorial-hard-surface-texture-painting.html

Right, except that nobody said that. Your model is original and distinctive; sharing a name with two other ships (one from a high-profile campaign set in the Freespace universe) just makes it a bit more confusing to manage. You don't have to change it, but there are plenty of cool names from Greek mythology to go around.

I was referring to SaltyWaffles comments about the name taking away from its originality.

Looks great! Very sleek, and modern-looking. Has a good shape for an escort-oriented cruiser (which most cruisers should be, really).

Two concerns:
1) Aesthetically (I guess in terms of shape), it is a rather big departure from FS1/2 Terran design, not to mention Vasudan. Not really a problem if it's in a post-Capella era, just something to keep in mind. It still looks awesome, regardless.
2) The name. While, yes, it's already a popular name for other models/ships, it's also fairly well-used elsewhere in recent times, and it kind of takes away from the originality of the model.
-) Off the top of my head, you've got the two GTVA Hyperion models already on here, Hyperion from Borderlands/Borderlands 2, the Hyperion from Starcraft/Starcraft 2, and...I vaguely recall it being a name for other sci-fi continuity ships/ship-classes. So it's not cliche, but rather a possibly squandered chance to make this model/ship stand out.

Overall, great work! Would love to see it in action.

I'm still working on the Dauntless to go along with the Hyperion.

How long are the two models?

the Hyperion model is about 790 meters and the Dauntless is about 1.5 Km

How long are the two models?
For the Hyperion, that's one question you could have answered by looking at the wiki page I previously linked :)
People are stupid, therefore anything popular is at best suspicious.

I was referring to SaltyWaffles comments about the name taking away from its originality.

Not so much taking away from its originality as its distinctiveness. And yes, I know that names are hardly original--often intentionally so--but there's a difference between a name leading to lack of distinctiveness/recognition/reputation (and confusion) when it's entirely unnecessary and a name happening to be the same as something unrelated or merely part of a larger, more distinctive name.

Hyperion--refers to three different (at least one of which is well-known) cruiser models on this site/FSO alone. Outside the context of FSO, it also is an extremely recognizable name in both Borderlands and Starcraft up to and including the present time. In the latter, it refers to an iconic sci-fi warship, and in the former, it is even closely associated with an iconic ship (the Hyperion 'H'-shaped ship is often referred to as something like 'Hyperion (something) ship'. I'm just saying, in both the immediately relevant and merely related contexts, it's already widely used and iconic for other (SIMILAR) things. A missed opportunity, not a failure or anything like that.

If you would like help for finding/picking names, I'm sure there are a lot of people here who would love to help you out. Heck, you could probably just throw some general categories out there--Greek Mythology, real naval history, Asimov's works, etc--and get a list of suggestions from each. Ultimately, it's totally up to you--if you think Hyperion is the right name for it, then by all means go for it.

1) Aesthetically (I guess in terms of shape), it is a rather big departure from FS1/2 Terran design, not to mention Vasudan. Not really a problem if it's in a post-Capella era, just something to keep in mind. It still looks awesome, regardless.
Nowhere is it said it's supposed to be a Terran warship, nor even that it's supposed to be set in the FS universe.
Sorry, my mistake. Still, it's just a general thought that came to mind. Perhaps someone thinking about using it for a mod in the FS universe would find it useful, or something, in the future.

And once again, fantastic model. It's got a very strong...character, I suppose, to it that stands out right away. Sleek and futuristic, but unquestionably functional and not overly complicated, either.

I'm sure we can all call it joelever's Hyperion and it'll be clear. Anybody who wants to use it in their mod can just rename it.

Also, man, I'm a little shocked you'd call out Borderlands and Starcraft for being 'iconic' and not the titan Yeats or the obvious SF referent Hyperion (crazy nutjob author aside)

Honestly Battuta, confusing Keats with Yeats? I expected better.

And this is why anyone who thinks that the model will be less 'distinctive' because of a name is wrong.

i'm going to assume this is technically a cruiser by classification since it's role is for "escort"
