Re: Blue Planet 2 Starting error
Now next problem: the hud is there, twice. reallly annoying.
The HUD doubling happens because of an error in the BP2 HUD table. See this post for instructions on how to fix it (ignore the "first" and "third" parts).

Re: Blue Planet 2 Starting error
Well the simplest solution was to play AoA campaign by selecting blueplanet1 as the current mod. But this solution would have only worked for AoA.  :p

Re: Blue Planet 2 Starting error
We're trying very hard to make the game playable on most hardware. MobileForce, yours, sadly, is below par, and there is only so much we can or want to do to target that kind of stuff. We're generally assuming that players of our mod will be able to field at least a mid-range desktop or Laptop with graphics hardware made in the past 3 years or so.

This means that there's a group of people that can't play this mod, no matter what we do. Sorry about that.

sorry to bother you then :(
i'm just saying you can optimise just about anything, league of legends even works on my old 2006 laptop.

Re: Blue Planet 2 Starting error
LoL was an entirely developed for a purpose studio created application. It can target just about anything it wants to under windows using API features.

FreeSpace Open, by conjunction, is a group of hobby (based on available time, not necessarily skill set) coders that are refactoring a previously generated engine that itself it an upgrade of a much older engine. The difference of scope and available capability makes this much more difficult to address than "just optimize it".

FSO, as an executable, will still operate on many machines, including machines that Original FreeSpace 2 will run on (assuming Windows 98 and a proper build environment). So that isn't a problem.

The problem comes from balancing that capability of performance vs. the assets and materials it has to work with. In this case, it's not the engine that your system is having a problem with, it is the amount of stress caused by the assets that have a minimum requirement to them that your machine barely manages to make.

If somebody introduced a mod-pack to LoL that doubled texture resolution sizes and introduced higher detail-ordered polygon models, you'd be in the same boat there too, and there is only so much one can do in terms of the CONTENT that will make it available to specific targets.

Well thing is that you can actually decrease texture resolution in LoL, even if there is a large- texture mod-pack
i guess it's possible to just decrease texture resolution?

The F2 ingame settings say hi.

Re: Blue Planet 2 Starting error
BP is as optimized as we want it to be. Understand this: We are under no obligation whatsoever to make a game that runs everywhere. Sure, we'd like to reach an audience that is as big as it can be, but at the same time, our vision for BP (Which includes some rather spectacular graphics) has to take precedence in the absence of monetary concerns. The "Official FSO build + compatibility pack" version is the lowest-end version we can support. Hell, in the release thread, we're specifically warning people off who're using Intel hardware, because we know that those do not have the horsepower to provide a good experience.

You are in that same boat.

BP's art assets were made with current mid-range gaming PCs in mind. We have no desire to compromise our visual fidelity any further, and will not provide or support a low-end version of the mod. You can try to reduce the number of effects in use, you can disable all the additional forms of texturing we use (glow, specular, environment, normal) via the Launcher's graphics section, and you can use the ingame options to further reduce the maximum texture resolution used by the game, but that will make the game almost unplayably ugly.

MatththeGeek, I am somehow getting reminded of your legacy. :D (hint, check in your sig.)

Re: Blue Planet 2 Starting error
Honestly, in the year 2013, if you're a self-professed "gamer," there isn't any particular good reason why you should be relying on integrated graphics.  You can presumably pay no more than $50 for a discrete card that can more than handle almost anything that FS2 can dish out.
