Deprecations:
None

Deprecations are a mechanism in FSO where a certain feature or aspect of the engine has changed or is no longer supported. Since this would normally break existing mods, we have the mod table feature "$Target Version:" with which a mod can specify what version of FSO it was developed with. Any features listed under Deprecations will be removed or changed when the target version of a mod is at least the version released in this post.

Launchers, if you don't have one already:
All platforms: For every day use, we recommend Knossos.NET, an integrated solution for downloading and launching mods.

Hidden Text: Alternative Launchers • Show
Cross-platform: wxLauncher 0.12.x Test Build (legacy project for a unified launcher)
Important: For best compatibility with FSO 3.8 and later you should use at least wxLauncher 0.12.

Windows:  Launcher 5.5g (Mirror) (Mirror) Not compatible with Windows 8+, use wxLauncher above
OS X:  Soulstorm's OS X Launcher 3.0
Linux:  YAL or by hand or whatever you can figure out.

Windows (32/64-bit)
Compiled using GitHub Actions on Windows Server 2019 (10.0.17763), Visual Studio Enterprise 2019

64-bit: fs2_open_24_0_1-builds-x64-SSE2.zip

32-bit: fs2_open_24_0_1-builds-Win32-SSE2.zip
This one is based on the SSE2 Optimizations from the MSVC Compiler.

64-bit AVX: fs2_open_24_0_1-builds-x64-AVX.zip
This one is based on the AVX Optimizations from the MSVC Compiler (fastest build if your CPU supports AVX instructions).

32-bit AVX: fs2_open_24_0_1-builds-Win32-AVX.zip
This one is based on the AVX Optimizations from the MSVC Compiler.

What are those SSE, SSE2 and AVX builds I keep seeing everywhere?
Your answer is in this topic.
Don't want to deal with that? Use Knossos.NET and it will download the best build specifically for your PC!

Linux 64-bit
Compiled with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 64-bit, GCC 5
fs2_open_24_0_1-builds-Linux.tar.gz

These builds use a mechanism called AppImage which should allow these builds to run on most Linux distributions. However, we recommend that you compile your own builds which will result in less issues.
Alternatively, if there is a package in your software repository then you should use that. If you are the maintainer of such a package for a distribution then let us know and we will include that here.

macOS
macOS 10.9+
Intel (64-bit): fs2_open_24_0_1-builds-Mac-x86_64.tar.gz
Apple Silicon: fs2_open_24_0_1-builds-Mac-arm64.tar.gz

These builds are not signed and so by default will fail to launch. To run them simply right-click on the app, click open, then click open again on the security confirmation dialog. You should only have to do this once for each app.
If running the game through Knossos or Knossos.NET this step should not be necessary.

NOTE: macOS builds currently have limited support and may exhibit issues not present on other platforms.

An external DLL is required for FSO to use TrackIR functions.  The following DLL is simply unpacked in to your main FreeSpace2 root dir.
TrackIR is only supported on Windows.

The Unification War / Re: Target monitor
« Last post by Novachen on April 17, 2024, 12:54:41 pm »
Always had the impression that any limited HUD gauge in the Unification War is actually a feature to show the technical advancements in-universe.

So that ships simple does not have a Target Monitor then...

My guess at least.

FreeSpace Discussion / Re: Ordering support ship to repair and rearm wingmen?
« Last post by Novachen on April 17, 2024, 12:38:57 pm »
In the normal game it is only possible with cheat codes.

so www.freespace2.com and ~+R on the target.
Saved me many restarts of missions, when mission critical ships were disabled by accident.

There are very few mods which add a "Rearm/Repair my target" order in the comm menu for the support ship. But i ever saw that only in one or two occasions.

There never has been as far as I can remember.  I think you could order a repair with cheats, but I've never seen the usefulness of it.

Friendlies call for rearm when their missiles are depleted anyway, you can't see how many missiles they've got left.  On the repair side, subsystems are self repairing if not completely destroyed, and a friendly fighter that's taken so much damage that it's lost a subsystem altogether will probably be dead before the support ship gets to it.

FreeSpace Discussion / Ordering support ship to repair and rearm wingmen?
« Last post by Iain Baker on April 17, 2024, 05:05:32 am »
Hi there. Is there a way to instruct a support ship to repair and rearm a specific fighter/bomber? And if not - can I feature request this please, and if so how?

I ask as I was playtesting the other night and several of my wingmen had taken some damage, and one was below 10% hull. I got them to follow me to a safe area and called in the support ship. What does it do? Goes to the craft with say 95% hull first and only fixes the ‘10% hull and on fire’ fighter last - after repairing about four other only slightly damaged fighters. 😂 Grrrr…

A ‘rearm my target’ option on the comms menu would be ideal, especially if issuing the order pushes the craft to the head of the queue.

Attention pilots! The 53rd Hammerheads have arrived! Fly today!

Thanks for the patience. With the poll, you decided you wanted squadron patches, and though it took a while, what better way to begin than with the 53rd Hammerheads!

This is a 3 inch (2.54cm) circular velcro patch in military style.

The Unification War / Target monitor
« Last post by Kane Kaizer on April 16, 2024, 07:24:13 pm »
I'm honestly amazed that this campaign is apparently still being worked on. But in the latest version, 2.0.2, I can't seem to use the target monitor box in the lower left corner of the screen. Is this supposed to happen or do I need to do something? It's kind of awkward to play without it.

Also, sometimes I can target ships on my escort list but I can't actually see the escort list. Not sure what that's about.

The FreeSpace Port Upgrade / Radar icons

Playing 4.7.1 and for some reason I can't figure out how to enable the ship radar icons instead of the little blips. I remember being able to do it years ago but for the life of me can't seem to remember how I did it anymore.

The FreeSpace Port Upgrade / Re: Errors
« Last post by Kane Kaizer on April 16, 2024, 07:07:07 pm »
I get 46 errors for some reason, but it doesn't seem to affect anything in game surprisingly. No idea how to tell what the errors actually are, though.
