Title: AMD or Nvida

I was thinking of getting a AMD 580 RX for my windows 10 system. Freespace 2 open is just one game that I want to play I also have the star wars force unleashed games. Does it matter which brand I use for Freespace open?

Provided your CPU has sufficient horsepower (any modern intel chip or AMD Ryzen chip), an RX 580 will work fine.
Granted, an NVidia chip will work better for FSO (roughly 30% better at any given price point), the RX 580 (especially used) is such a good deal right now I'd still go for it.

Why does Nvidia work better than AMD?  My CPU is  i5 8500 3.0 GHZ.

That CPU is more than capable.
NVidia works better due to their superior OpenGL implementation on Windows. AMD's works...just not as well.

I decided after reading reviews on a few websites I went with the PNY Nvidia GTX 1660 6gb. The AMD 580 rx had to many DOA reviews.

nothing wrong with a 1660. enjoy!
