Title: My joystick won't work on latest FSO
Post by: Warnstaff on October 11, 2020, 08:28:01 pm
Hello everyone! I have a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and it's not working ONLY on the latest versions. It works fine on 3.7.1 but nothing later.

Things I have done:
-Made sure it was the preferred device
-Tried the knossos launcher, but it didn't launch. Separate problem.

Oh, I guess that was it LOL! It seemed like a lot more.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would love to try out the new MediaVPs.

I'd advise figuring out why Knossos is not launching might be a good first step. Are you able to post screenshots of your Knossos settings? Also feel free to ask on the Knossos Discord channel to get more rapid help! https://discord.gg/jzdXGrT (https://discord.gg/jzdXGrT) :)

Oh, okay. Well, here are my Knossos settings. In the second one you can see that it's stuck on "Applying Engine Flags".

Thanks. The first thing I notice is that it looks like you are installing your Knossos mods to the same directory that Freespace 2 is installed to? I'd recommend directing the Knossos directory to a blank folder, such as C:FSO/ rather than place it in the folder that Freespace 2 Retail was installed to.

It also appears you are manually browsing to and selecting the build for Knossos to use? If that's true, then I'll add that you actually don't want to use browse, simply use the dropdown arrow to show and click on available builds. If Knossos is setup correctly then the stable build will appear in the drop down list, then you can click on it to use it. Here's a screenshot of what I mean (note I am using nightly builds so the dropdown names won't specifically match what you have).

If these steps are still a bit confusing then no worries, I can provide some more details, just let me know! Thanks!

I have reinstalled Knossos as well this time to make sure nothing is installed to Freespace, though there is a library folder in there anyway. Despite setting to what you have, I'm still not getting it to start. Maybe I'm being impatient, but how long does it take to start? I have it installed on an SSD.

Now it won't save the selected 1.9.0 build in either the Global flags menu or the FSO settings. The FSO settings just go back to "Mod Settings" and the global flags menu won't let me access the Full Command Line section.

Knossos shouldn't take that long to start, probably under a minute.

Unfortunately, Knossos has a known issue (https://github.com/ngld/knossos/issues/198) that uninstalling it doesn't remove the Knossos settings, even when you check the "Remove Settings" box. I'm working on fixing this. (https://github.com/ngld/knossos/pull/212)

Uninstalling won't delete your Knossos library folder, though. I guess we could add an uninstall option to do that, but deleting that folder is a pretty drastic action that we really wouldn't want players to do accidentally.

Are you comfortable deleting the Knossos settings folder yourself?

To do this, first uninstall Knossos.

Then go to Windows's "Run..." dialog by pressing Windows key with R, then type %appdata% and press Enter.

Then in the Windows Explorer window that pops up, find the folder named "knossos" and either delete it or move it to the Recycle Bin.

At least, this is how to find the folder on Windows 10, but I'm fairly sure it's the same for Windows 7.

Then try installing Knossos again.

Funnily enough I did manually delete both the Library and primary knossos folders. Had to restart before I could too since my computer thought it was being run by another program.

In the meantime, I'll try the appdata thing.

Urgh, that didn't work. Still doing the exact same thing.

There's a Knossos cache folder that's also worth trying to delete.

I figured that this other folder was unlikely to be involved, but if you're still having issues, it's worth deleting that folder, too. Maybe it got corrupted or something.

To get to this other folder, follow the same process as before, but instead of using %appdata%, use %localappdata%

Can you try doing the same procedure as before, but deleting this other folder as well, in addition to deleting the Knossos settings folder?

Alright, I did a complete reinstall after deleting all the folders including in the appdata and localappdata directories. Still no dice :(

Ugh. :( Thanks for trying that, though.

My best guess is that Knossos isn't compatible with Windows 7. I'm not sure if any Windows players have used anything other than Windows 10 with it before.

You'll probably have to use wxLauncher, then. To start, you can use FSO 3.7.1, since you said that was the last FSO build that worked for you.

Was the joystick the only thing that stopped working with builds after 3.7.1? Was the game fine otherwise?

I can try to do a "life support" patch for wxL, if we can figure out why your joystick stopped working after 3.7.1. I can't reproduce, though, since I no longer have a joystick.

Thanks for working with us through this and for being so patient.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that you can use the FreeSpace Open Installer (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=87537.0) to install mods, so you don't need to install them manually.

Well, it is coming time for me to upgrade to Windows 10 anyway. It sucks, but gotta move with the times.

The latest version that works for me is 1.7.1. Anything later and my stick doesn't work.

What is the "Life Support" patch? I've not seen it. Also, the latest version of WXLauncher (0.12 RC3) also doesn't work. Keeps giving me a "wxbase311u_vc141.dll is missing from your computer". Is this also a windows 10 thing?

And yes, I do have the FSO Installer you linked to. I've used it too.

Well, I upgraded to windows 10 just now and..... it works! Thank you for your help! Now I just have to figure out how to use my mod on Knossos. I'll figure it out though.

Thanks again :)

Great, glad to hear it's working now! And happy to help. :)

If you run into any issues getting your mod working with Knossos, feel free to start a thread on the  Tools board (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=193.0).

Happy playing and modding!
