When i select the mediavps folder as the mod dirctory i get an error saying 'mod directory name can't contain space', and the name does not have any spaces in it. HELP!

Are there any spaces in the directory path, like C:\Games\freespace 2\mediavps?

Just upgrade your Launcher version and you should be fine.  Try this one: http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/Launcher55c.rar

Where did you get a version of FS2_Open old enough to give you that problem anyway?

I'd suggest running Turey's installer and pointing it at your FS2 folder to make sure everything else is also up to date at the very least.
