I looked around but cant seem to find any help on this problem.

Downloaded the whole suite of FS2 open executables, Mods and mediaVP's from Turey on this website (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html) and got the original FS2 working fine sound included. Thoroughly enjoyed and wanted more. so started tinkering with upgrades and mods. Upgraded the Launcher to 5.0 then fired up the FS2 open 3_6_9 version. Got message at launch "Openal 1.1 or newer is required for proper operation. Please upgrade your openal drivers, which are available at http://www.openal.org/downloads.html. " I successfully used the installer but to no avail. same message every time. Game Works fine except for the sound. No effects, speech or music.

Tried 'Derelict' mod, same problem. Tried moving the Derelict Mod .vp files into the Freespace2 root folder and updateing the mod.ini file to no avail.

Re-tried origin FS2 executable. Lost the pilot in translation again but sound was working fine...

If it helps I originally unpacked the lot in C:\program files\freespace 2 but the spaces in the path screwed up using the Mods and gave an error message so I moved the lot to C:\games\freespace2 (as suggested) and now no problem.

TOP game by the way. I got bored of others and wanted a space flight sim like 'Elite' or 'Freelancer'. This seems to have better dogfighting but any other sims like this please let me know! Or mods that expand the game further.


Any ideas what is causing the sound problem?

1. Might be a corrupt OpenAL install. See this for instructions on doing a complete reinstall of OpenAL.

Hmmm thanks for getting back so quickly. Unfortunately neither  seems to have worked!

1. OpenAl : neither the old OpenAl 1.0 files ct_oal.dll or nvopenal.dll were evident at C:\Windows\System32 so i deleted OpenAL32.dll and wrap_oal.dll and ran he installer. The new OpenAl files were installed but the message remains and the game still has no sound....
2. The 5.5c launcher extracted to the root FS2 directory but throws up the generic "Freespace Launcher has encountered an error and had to close. Send/Don't send" message when executed.

Any further ideas? Also I replaced the original mod.ini file in the FS2 root dir when I dropped 'Derelict' in. Anyone know where I can get an original? or the content wording?

The new OpenAL32.dll file installed at C:\windows\system 32 needs to be copied to the C:\games\Freespace2 directory (Root) to overwrite the old one. Sound again!

Thanks all. 'Derelict' is proving to be better than the original in some ways. You guys are good at what you do.

Usually that means you have a dodgy OpenAL DLL somewhere else in your path. If you searched your HD for ct_oal.dll and nvopenal.dll you'd probably find one somewhere.
