[SOLVED] HELP: String errors and CTDs! Debug log included.
Disregard. It turns out that FreeSpace just didn't like my directory.

Hi fellas!
I played a previous version of FSO, though I can't remember which one. It was in the beginning of 2010, so maybe it was 3.6.10 or 3.6.11?
Anyhow, I saved my pilot files, so I could continue my progress at a later date. That date is now. But when I have the pilot file in the FreeSpace Open\data\players\single\inferno directory I get a crash to desktop and this error:

ERANGE: String error. Please Report.
Trying to put into 127 byte buffer:
Commander Skafsgaard.pl2
<no module>! KiFastSystemCallRet
<no module>! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes
<no module>! <no symbol>
<no module>! <no symbol>

Is my pilot file incompatible with FSO 3.6.12 - or is this another type of issue, maybe one with a solution?
Also, the game works just fine if I create a new profile, but I am loath to do this since that means starting over on my current campaign, as well as losing my kills and medals.

I hope you can help,
cheers! :)

EDIT:
Hm, it seems that I get a lot of these errors in different areas of the game. For example, I can run the training missions just fine, but if I try to run the first campaign mission, I get a similar error and a crash to desktop.
Or if I try to access "Multi" in the in-game options, I crash and get two similar errors:

"ERANGE: String error. Please Report.
Trying to put into 127 byte buffer:
2_OptionsMultiGen-M.dds
<no module>! KiFastSystemCallRet
<no module>! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes
<no module>! <no symbol>
<no module>! <no symbol>"

and

"Verify failure: Vbuf0 != NULL

<no module>! KiFastSystemCallRet
<no module>! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes
<no module>! <no symbol>
<no module>! <no symbol>"

Please help!

EDIT2:
I use a very old ATI GFX card - a Radeon X550 to be specific. I don't know if maybe it has a problem with OpenGL? It doesn't sound plausible, since I can run the game and the training missions just fine with a good fps too, but you never know. Does anyone know where I can get a hold of FSO 3.6.9, so I can try running FSO in D3D mode instead?

EDIT3:
Also, I'd just like to note that I have the latest drivers for my gfx card, and I have tried using this (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?wijitgmjgbz) and this (http://koti.mbnet.fi/reiler/FunkyFreeSpaceStuff/atioglxx.dll), as suggested in the FAQ of the support forum.
I found someone with a similar error (thread here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70972.0), but the solution to his problem didn't work for me, as it involved the deletion of a file (multi-missions.vp) that I don't even have.

EDIT4:
Just for good order, here's my specs as well as a debug log from after the game crashed from trying to run the first campaign mission.

Windows XP
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6400+ 3.21GHz
2GB DDR2 RAM
Radeon X550

Debug log: http://paste.org/pastebin/view/24636

EDIT5:
It seems that if I try running a mod, I can't even get to the main menu, before I get an error and a crash.
