  • I love... lamp?
Hi everyone,

You guys may remember a while back I had a thread where I was discussing issues with choppy gameplay. Basically what happens is the game maxes out the CPU core that its running on, causing the framerate to dip for 1-2 seconds, about every 5 seconds or so. This essentially makes the game unplayable. However, this does not happen in windowed mode, only full screen. Well, I'm still having this issue and haven't figured out what the problem is. One new thing that I have noticed however is that I'm having the same identical problem on both of my PC's, and that it happens with vanilla Freespace 2, straight from GOG.com. So I think the problem is somewhere in the core FS2 files, and doesn't have anything to do with the FSO modifications. Also, the fact that the same thing is happening on two different computers is very strange to me.

I used to have no problems back in the day when I played with my old Windows XP machine that had waayyy worse specs than both of my new machines. But I guess my question is (because I think I'm ruling out any hardware issues at this point), could this possibly be due to something with Windows 7? That is the only thing my two computers have in common, as the hardware in the two is completely differmt.

Not trying to beat a dead horse here... just realllyyyy wanting to play Freespace and wanted to see if anyone had any fresh ideas.

Also, here is a log just incase.

Specs are:

i7 2600k
16 gb DDR3 @1600mhz
GTX 580 x2 in SLI
Gigabyte Z68 UD4 mobo
80 gb intel SSD
1 tb seagate storage drive
Windows 7 ultimate, service pack 1

All latest drivers

My other PC has:

Intel core 2 quad
6 gb DDR2
nvidia 9800GT
750 gb HDD
Windows 7 home premium, sp1

All latest drivers

So yeah... obviously I shouldn't be having any issues lol. At first I thought I narrowed it down to FS2 possibly not working well with intel hyperthreading or speedstep, dissabled both and it still maxes out core #2, even with a 4.2 ghz overclock!! But when I noticed the SAME thing on my other PC, I realized it must have something to do with either windows 7, intel cpu's, or nvidia drivers lol.

Are you sure it's fs2/fs2o that's maxing your core, and not anything else windows has going on? Maybe you've got a virusscanner that thinks fs2 is bad or something? have you tried running windowed and keeping an eye on the task manager?

Hmm I will check when I get home... I don't have an anti-virus on my main computer and I shouldn't have any major background apps running, but that could possibly be the issue if there's something else running on that same core.

Yeah I've watched task manager too. In windowed mode it hardly uses any CPU strength, in full screen the second core is totally maxed

FS2_Open can occasionally max out even latest and speediest Core i7 if using mods because the game is not multithreaded where it matters, so it stresses only one core. However, you shouldn't be experiencing the kind of problems you have reported here. A lot of people use Windows 7, Core i7 and GeForce 5 series cards without such issues.

I know there was at some point a stuttering problem related to comm anims, I do not know what became of that one. All I remember is that some people reported heavy stuttering whenever a communications animation was playing but last I saw, the coders couldn't figure out what caused it. The reports later dried out, so maybe it was solved eventually?

But can you please confirm one thing? When you said "vanilla", did you mean you used fs2_open without any mods or that you used original retail executable (FS2.exe or FreeSpace2.exe)? Also, does your Freespace2 folder have sub-folders called data2 and data3?

Wow, sure enough it only happens when comm anims play. Not sure why I never noticed that before. No way to disable those huh?

And yes, it happens even with plain old FS2, with no FS open stuff installed at all (FS2.exe)... although it's not limited to when comm anims play then, it's just kinda random or all the time lol.

Nope, data2 and 3 have been deleted.

I think you can disable the comm animations by turning off that part of the HUD in your HUD config.  I don't know if that's exactly what you're looking for though since it might also turn off the comm messages completely.

Also - that bug Fury mentioned - it's still around :sigh:

Actually - Valathil's still looking for a 2nd person to confirm that his fix didn't work, so if you could test it for him, that would be appreciated.

Thanks niffiwan,

Tried Valathil's build- it did not solve the problem. However, turning off the comm animations in the hud configuration seems to have solved the problem! I'll test more later when I have time just to verify with myself, but I think I may have finally found a solution! :) (I can survive without the little moving heads lol...)

Well it seems as though I've finally found an answer to this problem that's been plaguing me for at least the past year. Shout out to Fury for mentioning the comm anim connection... I can't believe I never noticed that the stuttering was directly connected to that! Now I can finally enjoy FS2 again! Cheers!!!

Could you do a little test?

-Go to Launcher -> Features -> List type: Game speed

-select "Disable vertical sync"

-start game fullscreen

-re-enable the comm animations on HUD.

It does not stutter with vsync disabled. Re-enabled it and instantly got the stuttering issue when comm animations play.

Why don't you check task manager from time to time and see what else is consuming CPU time besides FS2O when you're in full screen, I think is some software meddling there, I have less powerful PC than yours and no stuttering at all, ever, the game lags if I run on the background WCG BOINC client but only then, since I have it to use 100% on each of my 4 cores. I'm a PC tech and I would give you remote support if you want, PM me if you're interested.

Then, I would recommend leaving VSync disabled on FSO Launcher, but enabling it on your GPU driver control panel.

Erm... you do realize from reading this topic that stuttering due to communication anims is a known issue since long ago? Cause of the problem is unknown as it only happens on some, not all PCs.

Actually I read the thread and I didn't realize that, nor didn't know about it was a random and sneaky bug. Anyway I'd love to see his task manager and startup processes to compared them to mine and think if some of that or maybe some hardware config is causing the bug.

  • What?
Just did some testing.

Whether I leave it enabled in FSO, or force it on with the drivers, in all cases the head ani stutter occurs.

Vsync, wether enabled by drivers or FSO, will create this issue for me.

What's the FPS in head ani files?

If it's something stupid, it's possible that it ends up forcing VSYNC to take the smallest common denominator of the head ANI and the actual frame rate. Like, let's say head ANI has 24 FPS, and actual frame rate is 60 FPS, if might force the frame rate to go all the way down to 12 because then it can factor both to the display's frame rate (2x12 = 24, 5x12 = 60)...

Or something. I can't really see why such a thing would happen. Maybe there is something in the HUD code that affects the rendering when an animation is played on it. Animations elsewhere don't have such effect. Could someone take a look at the FPS gauge during the problem, when a head animation appears, and report the results? :nervous:
