Very stupid FRED question
Ok, I'm going to sound like a luddite (what else is new) but I have ran into, er 'technical difficulties'

I have been looking at this http://fredzone.hard-light.net/freddocs/quickstart.html and it states: "Pick Save As... from the File Menu. Call the mission duel.fs2. Do not change directories; all missions have to go in a certain directory, and FRED2 puts them there by default."

I'm guessing this tutorial is perhaps for retail FS since it it didn't know where to put the mission file. Is there a more up-to-date guide i should be following?

If I were to make a mission using FS 2 MVP 4.0, where should I save it to?

If I were to make a mission for say Blue Planet, where should that go? (I'm guessing missions for differebnt mods will need to live in different directories?)

Also, place your bets for how many Fenris it will take to kill a Sathans. I'm guessing around 50. Closest answer wins, er, nowt  :p

Re: Very stupid FRED question
As long as you have a Data/Missions folder in the folder where you installed FS2 it should work. :nervous:

Re: Very stupid FRED question
Yup, that worked :-)

Now trying to make another mission but FRED's UI, viewpoints and the controls are completely counter intuitive. Is there any way to make its controls work similar to Homeworld, so you can easily pan and zoom, zoom out to an overhead position etc using the mouse?

Any advice greatly appreciated :-)

Re: Very stupid FRED question
You can use a and y to move the camera forward and backward, it's somewhat similar to zooming.

The camera in FRED behaves like a ship you’re flying.

Re: Very stupid FRED question
Regarding your Fenris vs Sath test - since no weapon aboard the Fenris has supercap flag IIRC the correct awnser should be that it's impossible even if you add 398 of them organized in wings with 99 waves attacking the rear...

Re: Very stupid FRED question
Thanks guys!

I managed it, sort of. I figerd using the Vasudan destroyers instead on the the Fenris. So I lined up three of them, all within beam range of the Sath and... both the Sath and the Pasms turned to funny angles and then did nowt. Neither side fired their beams. The Pasms used their fusion mortars but thats it.

Basically the same scenario as in this video https://youtu.be/fDz-qup3huw  ;)

I remember hearing something about that and I was looking for the option but I couldn't see it. How do I do that?

The rightmost button on the toolbar locks the camera to the currently selected object (or the first object in a selection), which gives you a Homeworld style effect (except of course, that you control the camera with numpad instead with mouse movements). The mode is also toggled by Ctrl+V.

I find it most useful for every operation besides placing and moving objects - as placed objects get y-coordinate of 0 and moving an object you have tied the camera too usually results in you moving the object way off course.

Re: Very stupid FRED question
Got it working, thanks guys.

So if the GTVA were to use Zapp Brannigan tactics by attacking the Sath head on with destroyers - all being in its field of fire - it takes about 4 Hecates and 6 Hatshepsuts. Sometimes there will be around three destroyers left at the end, sometimes the Sath takes them all down with a few cheeky "I'm exploding but still firing" salvos.  :p

Anyone wanna place any bets on an all Orion fleet using ZB broadside tactics? I reckon about 8  :)

Re: Very stupid FRED question
Depending on where you place them, 1 should be enough. I remember the single Sobek brought a Sath to 75% or so without going down.

If using sensible ship placement and flanking attacks yes, but that's not how Zapp Brannigan rolls

Re: Very stupid FRED question
But even GTVA command manages to do that...

BTW - it took 9 Orions to kill it but it usually took all of them with it. Probably needs 10 to ensure victory with at least one Orion left standing.

Next - Titans and Erebuses (Erebusei?) I'm gonner guess guess about six :-)
