Title: Re: [GUIDE] Installing Post-MediaVPs HTL Models!
Post by: Crybertrance on July 17, 2013, 08:24:19 am
Okay, so first things first:

STUFF YOU NEED FIRST

1) You must own a legit copy of Freespace 2 (http://www.gog.com/gamecard/freespace_2).
     -> 'Cuz that's the right thing to do.

2) You must have installed, the latest version of FSO (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83889.0), and you must have the latest MediaVPs (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70736.0).
   -> Cuz if you don't have these, you are not cool...  :nono:

[NOTE]
Please don't use any kind of automated installer, those are broken and will cause more problems then they fix.
To help you make up your mind, here's a fun fact! Every time someone uses the automated installer, An axe murderer kills a kitten  :( SAVE KITTENS! INSTALL MANUALLY!

[NOOB-NOTE]
Please follow all instructions while installing the .exe's and the MediaVPs TO THE LETTER!
To help you make up your mind about this too, here's another fun fact: Every time you follow instructions properly, awesome FS stuff gets made quicker!:pimp:

[NOOB-NOTE 2]
Whatever anyone says, DO NOT touch any contents in the "data" folder of your FreeSpace 2 install. There are some highly classified nuclear launch codes in there; SO KEEP OUT!

Once, you have all that taken care of, lets proceed to SETTING UP!

SETTING UP

[NOTE]
Please note that I will not be using the traditional 'dump all files in the 'mediaVPs' folder method simply because there is a high risk of messing things up. I will be covering a slightly more 'advanced' way to install these, but it is dead simple and you can easily uninstall stuff if you goof up or need to troubleshoot!

Ohkhizay! Lets get on with the show, eh?
Hmm... so far, we have umm Ten...Eleven...Twelve...Thirteen...Fourteen Hmm, fourteen epic models released so far! Whew! The community is really picking up the pace!

*sends the FSU Team a box of cookies*

So, with that done, lets continue shall we?
Now, assuming you have set up your FS2 install properly, you do need one more very important thing before you start pimping your FS:

1) A brain.
2) Ninja-like, leet copy-pasting skillz...

However, If you don't have a brain, it's time for you to leave the room.

Let us first start with setting up a place where we will install these awesome models (also lovingly called HTLs by the community).

After installing Freespace 2, FSO (the .exe's) and the MediaVPs, this is how your Freespace 2 directory should look like:

(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/misquittadaniel/rootfolder_zpsc6399843.jpg) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/user/misquittadaniel/media/rootfolder_zpsc6399843.jpg.html)

So, we create a new folder to install these ships to. For the purpose of this thread I will name my folder as "updated_ships". You can name it anything you want, but the folder name must not contain spaces. So "updated ships" is wrong.... Use the "_" character instead!

(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/misquittadaniel/Capture_zps0fa6b90c.jpg) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/user/misquittadaniel/media/Capture_zps0fa6b90c.jpg.html)
This is how your directory should look like now.

Now inside this folder create another folder called "data". Done? OK.
Inside the newly created "data" folder, create 4 other folders called "cache" "maps" "models" and "tables".

(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/misquittadaniel/Capture2_zpsa91c4a27.jpg) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/user/misquittadaniel/media/Capture2_zpsa91c4a27.jpg.html)
How it should look like now.

Whew! all this folder creating is making me thirsty!
*grabs a drink*
Ah! much better!

You probably must be wondering what these folders are meant for? Surely they are not just for decoration... :p

When you download the HTL model, you are gonna get files of these formats: ".bx" ".tga/.png/.dds" ".pof" ".tbm"".vp"

Now the final step, we have to integrate this folder into the game:
Go up a level, so that you are in the 'update_ships' folder, then create a new text document. Open it up and enter this:
Code: [Select]
[launcher]
modname      = updated_ships;
image255x112 = ;
infotext     = ;
website      = ;
forum        = ;
[multimod]
primarylist  = ;
secondarylist = mediavps_3612;

Now 'Save As' as 'mod.ini'

(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/misquittadaniel/Capture3_zpscc1ac187.jpg) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/user/misquittadaniel/media/Capture3_zpscc1ac187.jpg.html)
How your mod.ini should look

And the final step: Open up your FS launcher and add the this line to the end of the 'Custom Flags' field (don't forget to add a space after the last flag! :p)
Code: [Select]
-mod updated_ships
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/misquittadaniel/Capture4_zpsc868afc7.jpg) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/user/misquittadaniel/media/Capture4_zpsc868afc7.jpg.html)
How your custom flags should look like

And that's it! We are all set up!  :yes:
Wasn't that easy?  :D
Give yourself a pat on the back and lets move on to the part you all have been waiting for!

Drum roll please!

THE SHII-VANS!

So far we have 2 frighteningly beautiful Shivan models released to the public with many more in production! I assure you, dark, merciless genocide never looked this good!

SJ Sathanas

[NOTE]
Okay guys, slight change of plan here, because the Sathanas is such a bad-ass ship in general, there is not one, but TWO bad-ass models to compliment it! You can choose any one based on personal preference, but be assured that both are equally as bad-ass... Did I mention the models are bad-ass already? :p

SJ Sathanas (by Rga_noris)

Title: Re: [GUIDE] Installing Post-MediaVPs HTL Models!
Post by: Crybertrance on July 17, 2013, 08:25:49 am

WARNING!

It has to be made clear that since the official MediVPs release, most mods are likely not ready to support all these new models and that it's possible these models may break missions, even in the retail FS2 campaign. Installing as a separate 'mod' is most ideal because it's easy to remove them during troubleshooting (see below). However, I suspect most people don't want to deal with that, so they could, in theory, put them in the MediaVPs folder. However, that is even -more- likely to break missions.
-MjnMixael

TROUBLESHOOTING

If you are experiencing problems with your game after installing any of these addons, remove the  "-mod updated_ships" line from your launchers Custom flags. Then try to reproduce the problem to see if it occurs. You are more than welcome to post your problem on the forums or jump on the IRC with a fs2_open.log (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=47639.msg968772#msg968772) ready and you will get help! We have a nice and helpful community here and would be glad to help sort it out. (Unless, of course, if you have not followed instructions... In which case The_E will come to your house with a baseball bat....  :p)

And there you have it! A better looking FS2! Woot! Thanks for paying attention and I hope you had a fun time too!

Till we meet again, This is Crybertrance, signing off :warp:

Typhonnnnn :nervous:

(Also the Hades, though that is ostensibly a FS Port model - there is a table entry for the Hades in FS2)

Excellent work though!

[EDIT] Also the Knossos, though the change over retail isn't very drastic so it's easy to miss!

While I'm content with what I already have, I must compliment you on a very nice presentation. Very easy on the eye, I'm sure it's going to lure some people in who wouldn't have thought of grabbing these things otherwise...  :nod:

Good work.  :yes:

However, AFAIK the HTL Artemis had a glass issue in LOD1. Was that fixed?  :doubt:

Same issue with Boanerges. (It had engine texture on its cockpit in LOD1) Was that fixed in the download?

If yes then woooohooooo!  :nod:

But if no, then we should mention it to the downloaders, right?   :blah:

Did a quick test, and no. Those issues are still persistent. Kinda strange I didn't notice them! :p I had them in my game for the longest time and didn't notice! (But then again, when do you notice a LOD1 in the heat of combat!)

But never the less... I will add a caution in the post!

Thanks for pointing that out!

*Arpit reminds Crybertrance of the targeting window which by default shows LOD1. (Although with some tabling knowledge you can make it show LOD0. *

Thanks. Maybe you could just say that the turret placement and size make it easier to complete the missions, which may not give the mission the right feel? I think that was the main problem with it. The front beams are very big, not the little caps on the retail.

I don't know about that exactly, since I never used bobbtmanns Sath, but I had initially planned to have bobbs model alongside Rga's. But before preparing the guide, I pm'd Zacam over the issue of a packaged VP vs. a guide... and among that discussion, the case of two HTL's (the Sathanas being the only example) of the same model but by different authors... This is what he had to say...

2: As to the HTL Sathanas, we cannot release Bob's in the MediaVPs as it does not retain Retail compatibility for the placement of several of the turrets and subsystems, and is modeled in such a way that it cannot be made compatible.

And also, since this guide is more oriented towards the new, inexperienced user, I figured that it'd be safer to not get them confused...

However, I you all say so, I'll put up bobbs Sath as well!

Bob's Sath may not cause an issue with retail... but it could because of the turret issues. But if it goes in the MediaVPs proper.. the question then becomes, how much is a model artist allowed to change for any model that goes in the MediaVPs? It's a slippery slope and we decided to stay on the safe side.

However, the model is good and there is no reason it shouldn't be included in the 'self-install' list.

You know what would be great? A Freespace 2 Open Installer! Then, we could make it download additional assets like, say, these models!

Gods the idea is awesome, wonder if anyone thought it already...

(ducks!)

IIRC, there's an issue with multiplayer games if turrets (or subsystems etc) are different on the client and server (and I can't imagine there wouldn't be). A few MVP models already cause issues, and the only way around it is to have everyone playing with the MVPs or everyone playing without them.

Not sure if there are other issues that show up in SP as well, but I don't know of any FS2 missions built around the exact locations of Sath turrets. The Sath is prominent in A Monster In The Mist, Bearbaiting, and High Noon, all of which I think can work with minor changes in turret placement.

Hey, I've updated the guide to feature Bobbtmann's Sathanas as well. However, I'm not at my home computer. Can someone do me a favor and check if Bobbtmann's package needs any special "[INSTALLATION NOTES]"?  Thanks!

I don't think it needs some installation notes. It is provided as an individual VP.

The whole installation (with Rga's Sathanas) is around 1.07GB.

Excellent guide, Crybertrance!
I'm building a collection of upgraded art assets (which I'll upload as a single package once I find a host). After seeing your list, it turned out that I'd missed a few!

Glad I could be of assistance! I could've uploaded the complete package as an addon vp, but, we have pathetic upload speeds here in Mumbai and the package is quite exceptionally large!  :(

We apparently gave some leeway to the Deimos, as one of the pairs of the rear turrets is a few meters displaced in the MVP model compared to retail, but that seems fairly minor. If bobb's sath has some more significant changes (very displaced turrets, different turrets, etc), it could affect any other mod that uses the Sath, no only the retail campaign.

Also, in terms of balance, bearbaiting is substantially easier with either model, since the forward flak guns are no longer semi-invulnerable. In the retail model, the centers of the turrets weren't actually inside the hull, which meant that trebs (and any aspect missiles) detonated uselessly in front of the turrets. It used to be nigh impossible to kill those flak guns before you lost half/all your wingmen. I believe both Rga and bobb fixed this issue in their respective saths.

And there has still been some debate on whether that's a bug we should be keeping or not.

One would think [V] would have chosen another way to make the turrets invulnerable if that had been their objective.

You could mention Oddgrim's HTL Sobek he released some time ago. It's as cool as RGA's version :D and worth to be placed in the list as an alternative to RGA's Sobek.

If there are no bugs or balance issues, I see no issues adding it in...
Maybe I'll PM Oddgrim and ask him!

Sorry for the bump, but can someone please tell me if recently released models (like the Serapis) will work by using the same installation methods laid out in Cybertrance's OPs? Thanks!

This is very much nitpicking and I intend to post this only for informational purposes.

HTL means Hardware Transformation and Lighting which debuted with the very first GeForce and Radeon GPU's back in 1999/2000. Retail FS2 did not support HTL, but once source code was released one of the first major improvements was to add HTL support. Added rendering performance allowed hi-poly models, hi-res textures and hi-res effects just as it allowed other eye-candy. However, HTL and hi-poly never have and never will mean the same thing.

And no, I do not expect this post to change how the term is used here in HLP. Just as long as you realize that nobody uses HTL as a synonym for hi-poly outside of HLP and even here it is purely by association.

Carry on. :p

Yeap, just copy the files by extension to the right folders and you'll be good to go.

Wonderful, thank you.

[edit] Does anyone know if there are any other models missed in the OP besides the Serapis and the Knossos? I seem to remember someone re-doing some cargo containers, but a search didn't yield what I was looking for. I'm basically trying to get every single updated asset in the game I can before streaming a whole playthrough on Twitch.tv. :) If anyone knows of any additional new models that may have been missed, please let me know. Thanks, everyone!

[edit2] I also found the updated Shivan Comm Node, but no download link. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=78292.msg1685889#msg1685889) Was it ever released? I didn't want to bump another thread so I figured I'd just check here to see if anyone knew anything. Thank you.
