Title: Descent Freespace cheat problem
Post by: K515 on April 03, 2009, 06:18:01 pm
I'm playing my Descent FreeSpace PC game that I got for Xmas, but when I use the cheats (~K to destroy these fast-moving enemy ships) in cheat mode all goes fine until I'm at the debriefing, but when I click on "accept" at the end of my debriefing, I get a pop-up message that says "you're a cheater. You cannot accept this mission/debriefing." I like this game very much but since my reflexes are slow the only way I can win the training mission dogfighting test or the first champagin mission (if I choose to skip training) is by resorting to cheat mode so 1) I won't get killed in a dogfight, 2) I can fulfil my mission objectives and win that mission. How can I disable this pop-up "you're a cheater" dialogue box and proceed to the next mission so I can play (and win) all the champagin missions in this game?

So, is FS2 the only thing I have to buy, or is there other stuff I'll have to buy (I hope not) in order to enjoy the Free Space series while using cheat codes without that "you're a cheater" dialogue box restriction?

Now that I have all these downloads, will I still need my boxed version of Descent: FreeSpace, FreeSpace: Silent Threat, and FreeSpace 2: Colossus? If not, can I sell them or give them away and reuse the downloads (after first making backups of them) including FS2 from GoG, for unlimited times?

I'm nearly finished downloading all of the stuff - I've downloaded all the mods and the stuff from the FilePlanet links. Tomorrow I'll download the Silent Threat: Reborn voice files and the ST: Reborn sectorgames. Don't know if I'll need the stuff from FilePlanet and the sectorgames, tho.

Where do I find the mediaVPs and the FSO?

Well, if I can get FS2 from GoG for 6 dollars which is the complete version, well why not? Then I wouldn't need my cut-down version of FS2 Colossus (it's a retail, boxed version that I brought in 2001.)

Could you please answer my latest questions I've asked in my latest post yesterday and in this post? I'd appreciate this.

Now I'm downloading the Silent Threat Reborn voice files and the sectorgames.

Why are there 2 download links marked "sectorgames" on the Silent Threat Reborn page but they are the same thing? One is is next to the ST Reborn mod link and the other is next to the ST Reborn voice files mod link, but why do they have the same label when I'm downloading them?

Ok, I've downloaded the Silent Threat Reborn voice files and the sectorgames.

Also, may I inform you that I'm going away in 3 weeks for 1 week, and when I return home I'll see about buying FS2 from GoG, ok? Also, thank you, karajorma, for offering to talk me through getting all these downloads to work after I get FS2 from GoG.

(these were from my post in the General FreeSpace forum at www.game-warden.com. I posted there last night and today asking these questions and didn't get them answered. Is there anyone who can answer my questions on this forum and help me?

Thanks in advance!

If you want, you may read this this post (actually a thread) at www.game-warden.com where I go by the same name as here - K515 - if you want background info on what this post is all about - please do so; I'd appreciate this if you do so.

P.S. Just now I've downloaded the FreeSpace Open installer, and the installer source code - is this the same thing as FreeSpace Open, or is the FSO installer separate?

The only thing I can say to your post is that you take all the fun out of playing FreeSpace. :lol:

Okay
1.) There is NO way to avoid the cheat popup in retail FS1.  That's the point, so nobody just cheats through the campaign.  However, the FreeSpace Port for FS2 doesn't have this.

2.) FS2 is all you HAVE to buy, but you can buy the others if you want.

3.)  Turey's Installer will install most everything, but you need to download the Media VPs manually, since the installer has corrupted versions.  The 3.6.10 vps thread should be stickied under the FreeSpace Upgrade category, and you'll find the download in that thread.

4.)  What was your last post?

5.)  Idk why the ST:R files have the same name.

6.) Most importantly

:welcomered:

And don't be mean, Cobra.

4.)  What was your last post?

Here's a link to the entire thread:  http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7154
I have only 1 thread on that forum, and this is it. My last post is at the very bottom of that thread.

Whoakay. 'Sectorgame' is a file hosting site. It just hosts files, like Filefront, or Fileplanet, or Hades Combine (RIP), or FreespaceMods. There's no special kind of file called a 'sectorgame'.

Okay.  K515.

 http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Getting_started

That's the getting started page, so if you have any more questions, you can look there.  Only thing is, when you download and use Turey's installer (there's a link in the Getting Started page to Turey's site) the 3.6.10 media vps don't download right, so you have to install FSO with the installer and then grab the media vps in this thread.

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html

After you follow the instructions for setting up FS2 and FS2 open, play:
FreeSpace Port (FreeSpace 1 with the FS Open engine and graphics)
Silent Threat Reborn (an awesome remake of Volition's crappy expansion for FS1)
FreeSpace 2

IN THAT ORDER. You won't regret it.
Oh, and btw, you can just call me RWP.  I know my full user name is kind of a mouthful.

Thank you, RWP. btw, is Freespace 2 - SCP Update Pack v2.0 100% free? I hope I don't have to pay for all the downloads on that page - but do I really need all these other *.rar downlods (are they free?) on that page that's listed underneath the Freespace 2 - SCP Update Pack v2.0 download link if I get FS2 from GoG as a download (I have to wait until May to get FS2 from GoG)?

Here's the list of other FS stuff that I've already downloaded:

My downloads:
fsport3_1;
fsport-awakenings;
fsport-awakenings-voice;
fsport-cardinalspear;
fsport-cardinalspear-voice;
fsport-destinyofpeace;
fsport-destinyofpeace-voice;
fsport-missions;
sparky_hi_fs1;
stu_fs1;
tango_fs1;
warble_fs1;
FreeSpaceOpen Installer;
InstallerSrc20081001 source code;

[Silent Threat: Reborn]
fsport-str;
fsport-str-voice;

[Silent Threat sectorgames]
fsport-str.

Are there any more downloads I need (not counting FS2)? If so, what?

Everything's free around here. Feel free to download other people's stuff and play all the user-made campaigns. You can typically find links to them in their creators' signatures or any of the hundreds of thousands of campaign lists *cough* in the Wiki.

*snip*

Are there any more downloads I need (not counting FS2)? If so, what?
OpenAL (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/latest/oalinst.exe)
FreeSpace Open 3.6.10 RC1 (the game engine) (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,61891.0.html)
Launcher 5.5d (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,52691.0.html)
3.6.10 MediaVPs (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html)

FSO 3.6.10 and the Launcher can be downloaded with the FreeSpace Open Installer you already have. Not sure about OpenAL. The MediaVPs must be downloaded manually.

Install OpenAL, place the 3.6.10 .exes and the Launcher to \freespace2\, place the MediaVPs to \freespace2\mediavps\.

Thanks - ok, I've just got finished downloading these:

fs2_open_3_6_10_RC1;
oalinst;
Launcher55d.rar;
MV_Complete.7z;
FreeSpace_2_SCP_update_v2 - The link took me to a torrent site. I hope I didn't do anything illegal by downloading this and not paying.

So, except for the FS2 from GoG, am I all set to go?

Oh, when I tried to download FreeSpaceOpen from the link that you provided for me, it took me to the fs2_open_3_6_10_RC1 download instead. Now that I have the FS2Open, where do I get the FreeSpaceOpen download?

P.S. I don't have a Wiki, and don't want one, thanks.

There is no "FS1Open," as the original FreeSpace's source code was never released.  However, installing the FSPort allows one to play the original game (and several ported user-made campaigns) in the FS2Open engine and take advantage of its features.
Title: Re: Descent Freespace cheat problem
Post by: Rhymes on April 04, 2009, 09:52:09 pm
K515, the Fs2_open thread IS where FreeSpace Open is. That program is the modified game engine and .exe.   The term FreeSpace 2 Open and FreeSpace Open are used interchangably.  The 3.6.10 RC1 is the latest build of the engine.

Also, as to your concern about this being illegal:

Before Good Old Games started hosting FS, the only way to obtain the files to run FSO was by downloading it, since eBay is expensive and the game can't be found in stores.  While this was technically illegal, there was no other way to get the game, and everyone considered it to be a bigger crime to let FS2 die.  After Good Old Games went up, all the free downloads disappeared, since GOG is dirt-cheap, and because the main reason FS2 faded off the industry map was because it DID NOT SELL, and this was our chance to remedy that.  Since then, the entire FS2 modding community has been totally legal.

In short: relax.

And yes, you look like you're all set.  All you need to do now is get FS2.

FreeSpace Open == FreeSpace 2 Open == FSO == fs2_open == FS2O ...

You are now setting up FreeSpace Open and the FreeSpace Port. Ignore the original retail FS1 completely for now. It has nothing to do with FSO.

P.S. I don't have a Wiki, and don't want one, thanks.
:wtf: Uh, wut. TopAce was referring to the FreeSpace Wiki (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/), which has a lot of stuff. He meant that you should read it. You don't need to buy it or download it or sign any contracts. Just read it.

Do I have to be logged onto the internet to play FSport, ST: Reborn, and FS2 using all these downloads (I hope not)?
Title: Re: Descent Freespace cheat problem
Post by: Jeff Vader on April 05, 2009, 07:00:33 am
For multiplayer: yes.
Title: Re: Descent Freespace cheat problem
Post by: K515 on April 05, 2009, 09:24:30 am
Well, I don't want to use the multiplayer features at all; I want to stick 100 % with the single-player features - is this possible? So for single-player, even though I'll be using all of these downloads (including FS2), I won't have to be logged onto the internet at all?

Now I have a couple of questions:
1) can I play all of the FS1 and ST: Reborn missions without FS2?
2) can I play all of the FS1 and ST: Reborn missions using FS2: Colossus?
3) what problems may/will I experience if I try to play the FS1 and ST: Reborn missions using my cut-down version of FS2 (Colossus) or without FS2?
Title: Re: Descent Freespace cheat problem

Correct. Like any other singleplayer game, singleplayer FS2 (or FS1 or FSO) doesn't require the Internet.

1) can I play all of the FS1 and ST: Reborn missions without FS2?
You can play FS1 missions with the original FS1. ST:R requires FS2 and FSPort.

2) can I play all of the FS1 and ST: Reborn missions using FS2: Colossus?
Probably not.

3) what problems may/will I experience if I try to play the FS1 and ST: Reborn missions using my cut-down version of FS2 (Colossus) or without FS2?
With FS2 Colossus: quite possibly problems trying to get it running, if it lacks crucial data that FS2 has but Colossus doesn't have.
Entirely without FS2: it won't run. At all.

Just now I'm printing out "The Idiots Guide to Installing Freespace 2 Open Source *NOOB FRIENDLY* *WIP*" but part of my printout is cut off, even though I've used the forum's print feature. How can I fix this?

What does "Noob" and "WIP" mean?

Thanks!

A 'noob' is someone new to the community. General Internet speak.

'WIP' means 'Work In Progress'.

Actually, i found on FS1 that you can get away with the infinite ammo cheat.

What you to is enter the cheat code "www.volition-inc.com" then press @`@ + @W@ ... (im using a keyboard with the USA configuration in the UK...) to give yourself ulimited weapons. Then you restart the mission.
 You will still have infinite secondary ammo and primary energy.

Also you can get away with the cheats on the first half a Red-Alert mission.

IE...if you give yourself shivan super lasers on the second-to-last mission then you will keep them in the final mission.

But I'm talking about my printout - the words are cut off at one end in Print Preview. You never told me how to fix this. Also, I don't want to use my retail, boxed version of Descent FreeSpace anymore - I'd like to use the fs1 port stuff that I downloaded on top of FS2 from GoG (I have to wait until May to see if I can get this) to play all of the FS1 missions while using the cheat codes without that "you're a cheater" pop-up restriction that I get in my retail, boxed version of FS1. I like to use the cheat codes entirely through the entire course of FS1, rather than using my cheat codes "half way" like (such as the first half of an red alert mission) - this is my personal perference. But thanks for giving me these extra cheat codes, though.

If you're playing FS1 port on FS2, then cheats will work all the time. They don't work (most of the time) in RETAIL FS1, i.e. the boxed version. You have FS1 port on FS2, therefore cheats will work.

Yes, I understand; this was explained to me by karajorma on game-warden.com. But in the meantime, I'd like to print out the directions that I'll be needing in order to get some of this stuff (i.e. my downloads) installed properly and working. In other words, I'm trying to be prepared for May by printing out all the instructions I need. But part of my printout is cut off in Print Preview - please tell me how I can get Print Preview to show the whole printout, not the cut-off printout.

I think I noticed one thing.
You can try to run FSO without buying it using my idea:
First of all ,download standalone mod from this thread:

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,48480.0.html
It's old ,most likely dead TC ,but the important thing is it have all the
interface needed to run (though only in 1024-712 resolution).

Weapons ,Ships and tables you can get from some old retail mod ,here:
http://www.sectorgame.com/f2s/
you can find a lot of them (there was no tbms in retail ,so the only way to add
new ships was modifying main table).

Sound table can be extracted from Terran-Vasudan War Project ,it's most difficult part because I'm unsure if there are only slightly modified Sound tables ,you can try with TVWP one ,but I'm unsure about it.
You can get weapon sounds from InfR1 ,some may be missing from Apocalypse III ,but again ,they are not the same sounds as in retail ,and I don't know if they are original sound available.

So put Mediavps into Apocalypse III folder and then ,put tables into data/tables directory in mediavps folder.
Put sounds into data/sounds and then try to run the game.

I don't know if this solution  will work ,and if it will have no bugs ,but I'm certain about few things:
All models are in mediavps.
All needed effects are either in mediavps or in Apocalypse.
All interface is in Apocalypse
FS Port changes so many things that it should run under those condintions.
You will need to extract some vps if you want to use my proposition and this surely requires lot of work.
In my opinion it's better than paying for it ,but it's my opinion and I have some modding experience.
I have all that is needed ,so I will test it on my computer ,trying to run FSO without any files from retail can be intresting experience. Now hopefully somebody will correct me if I messed something up.

Bad idea. Really, really bad idea. It may work, but troubleshooting it if you experience any unforeseen consequences is a royal PITA. For the love of all that is fluffy in this world, DON'T DO IT. Give the GOG folk a bit of your money, and make your life easier.

Agreed. If you want to MacGyver yourself a "working" FSO without FS2, you're on your own with any and all problems, at least as far as I'm concerned.

OK ,I have re-read the thread and I started to think for him it's really not the best solution.
It may work for experienced modder who knows exactly what to do ,but not for somebody who is getting started with FS2.
I proposed this because I though it's a good idea ,and it's propably good idea for me because:
1. I'm from Krakow (it's like being from Scotland in this matter).  :)
2. I don't like to give my money to anybody else.
3. I do have some experience with modding.
4. I'm a lonewolf who does everything by himself (I decided to join after nearly year long playing with FS modding and lurking on HLP ).
5. I like getting straight to the point and if I have idea that may help ,I post it.
I think it may work for moddders who need working FS2 and ,for example ,lost the disks and don't want to pay.
Also why not to start on some free TC available around here?
Apocalypse III I mentioned is a bit outdated ,but it's fun to play and there is also Earth Defence Demo on FSMods (I made patch with some HTL models for it ,so you can get better quality).
I can assure Earth Defence Demo is good enough so you can play it while waiting for Good Old Games.
It's most likely better advice than one suitable only when you know how FSO works.
Also ,you may take a look on some themed conversions ,I enjoyed every single one of them ,even though I haven't seen Battlestar Galactica or Babylon 5.

I'll post back in May and I'll let you know if and when I get FS2 from GoG. The thing is, I'm going on a trip in 3 (well actually, 2 1/2) weeks from now, plus I'm saving up for a new computer (I'll be getting this after I return from my trip, which will be in May), so I'm going to be quite busy until I return from my trip in May. After I return from my trip in May, I'll consider buying FS2 from GoG for $5.99. Ok?

Well, it's your choice. But seriously speaking, you need FS2 in order to play FSO and FSPort. So we hope that you'll buy FS2 once you get the opportunity. You can then proceed with your possible questions regarding installation procedures and other things. We'll (probably) still be here.

But I tend to economize.  :)

 The slow option is to print screen sections and paste into Word or MS Paint or any other paint program. Trim/manoeuvre until it looks like the original web page. Word is probably easier, as you won't have sentences cut in half and put on the next page like if you use paint and make a really long image.

You need to cheat during training missions?

 "If you can't handle an Amazon, you should probably reconsider your career path"

I can't handle them well - they are slow, have no afterburners, shields or secondaries, and their primary weapon is useless. No, I just couldn't survive in one of those ;) . Training missions are boring - maybe he just wants to have "fun" or complete them "instantly" and still get his wings :doubt: although just doing the first one and skipping the rest achieves that as well.

Well folks, I'm back from my trip, and as of this moment, I'm downloading FS2 from GoG for $5.99. It's a 4 hour download.

Ok, everyone - I've finished downloading FS2, the game's soundtrack, manual, and the reference card from GoG. I assume this is the FS2 with the FRED thingy?

Here are all my FreeSpace donloads, plus my silent threat reborn downloads from last month;

(http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd225/KellySt10/myfreespace2downloads.jpg)

and here are all my FreeSpace 2 downloads from yesterday/today; so am I all set? Good to go? Except that I'd like to wait until I get my new computer probably some time next month or so before I start playing around with all these downloads as this current laptop's main hard drive is only 40 GB capacity, it now has lots and lots of stuff on it, and my new laptop's hard drive is going to be about 320 GB capacity with about 250 GB reserved for windows XP (it's going to be a macbook pro).
