Knossos is the recommended way to download!
Manual download links:
- Download WoD from Google drive (https://drive.google.com/open?id=12JGOgi4hpoFjDx6drXViz2C7hNdrXEdp)
- Download WoD from Mega (https://mega.nz/#!AxAiXK7T!Ox1O8gMLlnhv0fyEMf9Fq2ZAVzcyUMwYjeWCYvwdH9s)
Download WoD from Mediafire:

- Simply drop this new WoD-Core.vp into your WoD RE installation and overwrite.
- Fixes E1M6 Shopping's race to correctly check for the right time.
- Fixes an inertia problem in E1M5 after using a checkpoint to skip to after the ambush.
- Fixes Gauntlet not advancing past wave 3 when playing on Hard difficulty.
- Adds a passive point gain to Combat Simulator I and removes the Transport (is now redundant).
- The Refinery and Artillery platform in Combat Simulator II and III are now briefly protected from A.I. attack when it switches IFF.
- Can no longer accidently end Mission 15 - Welcome Back too early by flying too close to the Guardian Angel.
- Adds the Terran-CSA Gauntlet and the Hierarchy Gauntlets. Access them through the Database Mission Simulator - Single missions tab.
Important notes for manual downloading!
- If you are on windows 10, the launcher may throw up an error about being unable to find the graphics adapter. Setting the launcher to run in windows 7 compatibility mode will solve this issue.
- The launcher will default with the -res 1920x1080 flag. Changing the resolution in the video tab will do nothing if the -res flag has been set. If you want to set a different resolution, change the -res flag in the features tab instead.
- Shadows and deferred lighting are enabled by default. If you're running on older hardware, it is recommended to disable shadows. If framerate is still poor after that, disable deferred lighting. These are two main culprits for poor performance. Additional flags you can try disabling to improve frame rate are Framebuffer Thrusters and Lightshafts.
- wxlauncher is supported but not included.
- If you still have the old Episode 1 release installed, it is safe to uninstall it. Do not install the new Episode 1 & 2 release in the old Episode 1 folder, they are not compatible.
Manual installation instructions:
- Unpack Wings of Dawn RE.rar anywhere you want. It is a standalone game.
- Start the launcher and make sure it is pointed towards Fs2_open_Wings_of_Dawn-EX17-SSE2.exe
- Check the custom flags for the resolution and other graphical settings.
- That's it, enjoy Wings of Dawn!
If you require troubleshooting help, just post it in this thread.
Known Issues and Bugs:
Mission Bugs:
Second attempts at the race mini-game in "Shopping" may show that you failed even if you got a winning time. (But worry not, the other mini-games should be enough to win money for all of the goodies)Selecting the "After Ambush" checkpoint in "Counter the Contravention" will cause you to have a bug with your deceleration. (Selecting Before Ambush though will not)- In "Escort Contract" you may come across a debriefing that says you got a rare and obscure bug. We don't know HOW it happens, but it do. You'll have to replay the mission to progress.
The Gauntlet will not progress past wave 3 when playing on Hard difficulty - Switching to another difficulty momentarily will help circumvent this.
Engine Bugs:
- Text will not display at all with certain low-end AMD graphics cards. (Sadly this does not look like it will be fixed any time soon, but we have a work-around of sorts here (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=95368.msg1879261#msg1879261))
- The game may crash when exiting the game (this will be fixed next time we do an engine update)
If you encounter any problems with an error coming from parselo.cpp, it is likely that you have a corrupt archive. Either re-download or verify file integrity to fix that.
If you want to post a review or give your thoughts, feedback and critique, please post it: Here. (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=95367.msg1878867)

Credits and Shoutouts:
When a project has been in development for so long, it's easy to lose track of who contributed what over the years. If you did work for WoD in the past and I forgot to add you to this list, just let me know.
- Endless thanks to Axem for his vital, hard work. His numerous and amazing lua scripts have enhanced and elevated WoD to a level that I could never have accomplished on my own. But it's not just awesome scripts that he contributed, he also made a wide array of incredible ship models, including the one that takes center stage at the end of episode 2. He also produced, redid and retextured most of the asteroid models that make their appearance. Worked on the interface, hud and the awesome mainhalls. Additionally, he fredded several new missions for episode 2, made fantastic cutscenes and remade missions from episode 1 from scratch, which improved them many times over. He has also relentlessly helped track down and squash many pesky bugs.
- Omega thanks to Dahblount and Swifty for all their coding work. While Swifty may have been busy with his job in the games industry in recent time, his past contributions to things like shadows, the lighting engine, optimizations, shield improvements and multilock deserve all the credit that we can give. Meanwhile Dahblount has really stepped up to the plate when it comes to adding the endless features that we nag him about, and fixing the countless bugs that we've run into over the years. Development would have been a really painful experience (more so than it already was :P ) if he wasn't there and always available. Let me also not forget to credit him for the modelling work he has done in the past. Such as remaking the Ray MkIII and Kaze into their current awesome looking incarnations.
- And on the subject of models; I must thank Hades (or Hammer Nipples as he goes by on Discord these days) for the many model contributions he has made. Vital models such as Guardian Angel and the Dragonfly are all his work, amongst many others.
- Another person who has helped made part of WoD possible is Niffiwan. When the apng kickstarter turned out to be a dud (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=85280.0), it was Niffiwan who stepped up and worked closely with Axem to make apng a supported format in FSO. It works seamlessly nowadays and has become a vital part of WoD.
- Not a HLP resident, not even a FSO player. I must thank my good buddy Mpgrey, for he has gone through the massive effort of going through my many, many words in the VN fiction files and editing them. Correcting grammar and spelling mistakes and improving readability.
Also thanks/credit to:
PIe, Thisisaverylongusername (Rubik The Great) for playtesting. FrikgFeek for playtesting and given some valuable feedback in regards to ship and weapon balancing.
Sab0o for past modelling work; models like the awesome Colony. And also for his texturing work on ships like the Ascension and Basileus.
Droid803 for various small modding things in the past and for letting me use a bunch of models that were not specifically made for WoD, but do well in it regardless (such as the Peacekeeper/Rhea).
That also goes for AndrewofDoom who has made models specifically for WoD (such as the Ray MkII) and models that were not specifically made for WoD, but do well in it regardless.
Valathil for coding and bug fixing work done in the past (and for the first implentation of shadows).
m!m for his many recent FSO coding contributions that also help out WoD a lot. (Such as improving bmpman, particles and sound)
Since I mentioned sound coding, I have to mention jg18's work in that regard too. WoD's soundscape would have been dreadful if it wasn't for these coding additions.
wookieejedi for his custom wingmen hud gauge script.
manwiththemachinegun who offered to do VN editing work. I only ended up giving him a small amount of work to do since Mpgrey was powering through everything else at an amazing pace. But his help still deserves mention.
AtomicClucker for the Cavalier model.
Enioch for his fantastic Terconia Campaign lore story.
Battuta and redsniper for being cool dudes.
Spoon for his work on *deep breath*: Fredding/mission design, modeling, texturing, writing, playtesting, sound, bug hunting, script testing, tables, story, characters, art, effects and basically everything else that is game design/development related.
And finally: Thanks to all you players out there. The wait between episode 1 and 2 has been a long one, and I thank you for your patience and supporting words during that time.
You are allowed to use WoD's assets (With the exception of character art) in your own projects, assuming it's being used for non-commerical purposes. While not required, I would appreciate it if you would let me know that you intent on using any of WoD's assets. Take note that I do not hold the rights to any of the music, some of the sounds and some of the ship models that are being used in WoD. You may need to contact other authors for those. Refer to the credits for more details on that.
-
I really enjoyed playtesting for this project. The additions and modification to episode 1 are very welcome, and episode 2 kept me hooked from start to finish. I've already played the campaign four times, and I can definitely say I wouldn't mind doing a fifth. If you're reading this, what are you doing? Go play the campaign already, it's well worth it!
-
WOOO! Downloaded and am starting now! :D

32bit Win builts anybody?
-
With the amount of stuff in WoD, its very likely to kick the memory usage above what 32 bit builds can handle, so it's not really supported I'm afraid.
If you've got a 32 bit system, we might be able to try something but there's no guarantee it'll work. (though if we do it'll have to wait until tomorrow because I'm exhausted from this releasing :shaking:)
-
Take a break you guys, you sure earned it. :P
-
I've got an issue in the "Shopping" mission. When I go to the ship shop, I buy the stuff I need, but I can't leave the selection screen. It says "MORE" at the bottom of the selections, so obviously I need to scroll it, but I don't know how to do this. There's no scrolling arrow to click, and I pressed every single button on my keyboard. Also took a look at the key bindings and am not sure what would be tied to this. I switched to default FS2 controls btw. Can someone help?
-
What display resolution are you playing at?
-
1280x720. I know the default is 1920x1080. I lowered the resolution so I could play in a window and multitask.
-
Try it at 1366x768, then. There isn't any way to scroll; you shouldn't have to.
-
Thanks, I'll try it. I had a feeling it was a resolution issue, since some dialogue text also goes out below the box.
EDIT: That fixed it! Thank you.
-
Despite not foreseeing an Oct release, your team sure pulled off a good one releasing just two months later, Spoon :P
BZ!
Got the whole week to Meet and Kill aliens! Also, you might consider putting the trailer video from the dev blog in this release post...

I can't get Wings of Dawn to launch after downloading it from Knossos. I do have both Wings of Dawn and the Wings of Dawn builds downloaded.
Is there a log I can find and post to help figure this out?
-
Didn't see the note about posting for troubleshooting in this thread so I had posted in the other one.
I can't get Wings of Dawn to launch after downloading it from Knossos. I do have both Wings of Dawn and the Wings of Dawn builds downloaded.
Is there a log I can find and post to help figure this out?
-
May have come across a bug in "Shopping" I failed the red comet race even after beating the time of 2:45.
-
It has a manual .exe file called Fs2_open_Wings_of_Dawn-EX17-SSE2.exe . That's what I'm using, but I'm too stubborn to use Knossos and just installed it manually.
-
So I decided to just try the manual install for WoD and it worked fine. For some reason the Knossos install will not launch for me at all. It doesn't give an error or a log I can find (My last log was from 68 days ago or something ridiculous). I could play with the manual install but I would love to play through Knossos if possible. While I was fiddling with things I noticed I can no longer launch any of the nightlies through Knossos. The only build that actually even launches anymore is the 3.8.0 stable build.
-
There's a knossos log in %appdata%\knossos\log.txt
Try pasting that either here or in #knossos on Discord
Also; is your "Engine Preferred Stability" (Settings->Knossos) still set to "Nightlies"?
Lastly, I presume the 68 day old log is your FSO log? What place on your disk did you get that log from?
-
I look forward to downloading this and playing through both episodes. It's not a stealth sequel to anything is it?
-
DLing. How should the mod.ini look like?
-
Mod.ini is included... as long as you don't use the Knossos links to download the campaign.
-
Don't use Knossos, Ubuntu 16.04 here
-
Than everything should be fine. I just meant using the Knossos links for downloading without the launcher.
-
We're going to have Linux builds up on Knossos today. We had it ready but because of other technical issues, they didn't make it on there.
-
May have come across a bug in "Shopping" I failed the red comet race even after beating the time of 2:45.
That minigame!
There's been so many fixes and stuff for the race, but I thought I got it. I even specifically ran the race just before release to make sure it was still working (which it was!!). Just a few questions about it, what difficulty were you running and was this your first or second (or third) try? And what was your final time?
-
I used the DL links there, no mod.ini included, sorry for confusing. Linux builds downloaded from the release post
-
You can use this one I guess. There's not much to it since its a completely standalone game. (I would really not recommend running it as a mod to FreeSpace!)
https://pastebin.com/BVKj8G23
-
Medium difficulty, my second attempt. 2:35:50
-
Bleh, its probably not seeing the second attempt right. :hopping:
If you run it good the first time it should be fine. Well, something to patch for later I guess.
-
Downloaded through Knossos and standalone but not getting text in either. Any ideas on how to fix?
Edit by text I mean no text on profile select, no text from tech database and nothing in mission
-
What video card do you have? I did hear of some problems with TTF fonts and certain video card models before.
-
Im running an AMD A10 - 7300 processor with Radeon R6. In the launcher all high memory features are set to off. Im not expecting to be able to get it running tbh, just thought I would give it a try.
-
Yeah, I'm sorry to report that the engine is having problems with low end AMD GPUs when using TTF fonts in mods (like WoD). It's especially troublesome because anyone who could fix it doesn't have a card like that to debug it for themselves. :(
-

I know that Axem already send you a build in the mean time. I hope it works out okay!

I'm gonna be so lazy for the next 3 years.

We've been very busy to make it happen :) Hope you enjoy~
I considered putting the trailer video in the release post, but on the other hand, I kind of liked having it just be a clean and simple instructions post.
So I decided to just try the manual install for WoD and it worked fine. For some reason the Knossos install will not launch for me at all. I wish I could help with Knossos issues, but unfortunately I have no idea :(
I look forward to downloading this and playing through both episodes. It's not a stealth sequel to anything is it?
As usual, it serves as a stealth sequel of sorts to the Immortal Turbines art book trilogy.
Don't use Knossos, Ubuntu 16.04 here
None of the WoD devs have a machine running Linux, so I really hope it will run without too much issue for you!
Yeah, I'm sorry to report that the engine is having problems with low end AMD GPUs when using TTF fonts in mods (like WoD). It's especially troublesome because anyone who could fix it doesn't have a card like that to debug it for themselves. :(
Alas, some video adapters are just not going to cut it, it seems. :(
-
Ah well, just need to upgrade. Got the perfect excuse now :)
-
32bit Win builts anybody?
I know that Axem already send you a build in the mean time. I hope it works out okay!
So far so good. :) (Though I made it past the training mission yet, little testing obligation I had)
-
Just finished it. Phenomenal work, Spoon! I enjoyed it from start to finish! I really enjoyed the changes and additions to the first episode, and how you've been redoing the original story, particularly in regard to the various alien races. Liking the little hints/teases about stuff to expect in episode 3. :P Great mission design, and the last set of missions were particularly awesome; way to end a campaign on a strong note.
I got a question, what's that music that plays during many of the major battles? Most recently, on mission 25.

Also; is your "Engine Preferred Stability" (Settings->Knossos) still set to "Nightlies"?
It was. I also tried setting it to Stable and RCS but that just removed the Nightlies from the list. When I try to launch the nightlies (or WoDs version) it just says "FSO is launching" and then does nothing.
Lastly, I presume the 68 day old log is your FSO log? What place on your disk did you get that log from?
I'm not sure where its pulling that from. When I selected "upload debug log" to see what it would do it said the last log was from 68 days ago.
-
Thanks for the info.
Can you check if your anti-virus program is preventing FSO from running? If it is can you set an exception for the executable below?
Also; can you navigate to this folder with Windows Explorer and run this program?
C:\Games\FreespaceOpen\bin\fso-wod-17.0.0\Fs2_open_Wings_of_Dawn-EX17-SSE2.exe

I talked ngld on the discord and apparently fs did not want to open because the last time I played I had a joystick plugged in and when I tried to launch it recently I did not. Thanks for taking the time to respond but it seems to be all good now. :yes2:
-
THX. Works flawlessly
-
Damn Zeri. <3
-
I failed the race thing twice, then on the third try did it with 20 seconds to spare, and it told me i failed :blah:
e: The debrief said I succeeded at the race, if that helps any with debugerino, but I didn't get any credits and the minigame thing itself said I failed.
-
Aye, that's a known bug that slipped through. Hopefully fixed next time!
-
Just finished it. Phenomenal work, Spoon! I enjoyed it from start to finish! I got a question, what's that music that plays during many of the major battles? Most recently, on mission 25.
Thanks, good to haer :)
The OST is 90% from Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon (Horizon in the middle of nowhere), including the tracks played during mission 25.
Damn Zeri. <3
She's a big meanie, she won't love you back!
-
I told myself for quite a long time that I will dust off the old FS2 installation when this comes out. Well, the time has come and it seems I'm really out of date. Like what is this Knossos thingy? :nervous:
The OST is 90% from Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon (Horizon in the middle of nowhere), including the tracks played during mission 25.
That alone is more than enough reason to play it. Who cares if I loose every mission cause I can't play anymore, as long as the music runs its fine...
-
No dusting off is required, you can just install WoD dust free, since it's a standalone release :p
Knossos is a really handy launcher (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=94068.0) which will make installing any kind of mod/campaign/fs2 based game really easy.
-
Hmmm, can't play because there's no text (lousy AMD cards!) and can't use the debugs because of
Warning: Weapon ExtendLifeF spawns itself. Infinite recursion?
File: weapons.cpp
Line: 2867
But I've waiting for this for a long time. I will play it.
-
You can savely ignore that debug text by hitting continue. It's a mostly pointless message.
-
Alas, doing that will make the message appear again. Infinitely.
-
Infinite recursion?!
Hmm well, that's weird and unusual. :(
-
Update: after doing some dark magicks (moving certain contents from the WoD builds folder to the normal WoD folder and setting the DEBUG build to "Run as Administrator") I've gotten the texts back. Wings of Dawn, here I go!
-
Hmm...
So the race bug, I assume that when you say first try I assume you mean first try since starting the mission? Does restarting the whole mission/game allow you to try again?
If so it also seems that getting within 10 seconds of the cutoff time (2:37:XX) also doesn't count as a victory either.
-
Patch that fixes the issue with the race timer. (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1zizIvG47toc_GYg0CdA9wlOrnZXYTuGQ)
Turned out our initial assumption about it bugging out on a retry wasn't entirely correct. It was instead a matter of the race merely checking to see if the player made it in under 150 seconds, with no regard for what difficulty the player was on. Should be fixed with the above patch. Just drop it into your WoD installation and overwrite.
-
And the Knossos version will be patched very shortly!
Knossos updated!

Unfortunately, not using a Debug build is not an option. as the regular builds don't render the text and seem to do quite wonky things with the camera.

Can you take this fonts.tbl and put it your /data/tables/ directory to override the one in the vps? It basically makes all the TTF fonts back into VF ones, so they won't be as nice but hopefully it'll work for you.

Can you take this fonts.tbl and put it your /data/tables/ directory to override the one in the vps? It basically makes all the TTF fonts back into VF ones, so they won't be as nice but hopefully it'll work for you.
Great success! Texts are back.
EDIT: the missions, however, are gone. Every mission now loads a ghost where the player should be, no HUD of any kind and the words "top view" on the top of the screen. It is as if it was stuck in cutscene mode.
-
Go into the control settings and find the "view up" command and unbind it. It seems like the game thinks you're constantly pressing it.
-
I have the same problem with "Shopping" mission and scrolling during buying stuff, but knossos doesn't allows me to change resolution over 1280x1024...
-
Whoops, wrong thread.
-
I get into a soft lock during the Episode 1 Gauntlet: After wave three, the game just refuses to spawn any more ships.

Hm, what difficulty are you playing on? Try setting it to something else and see if it still happens.
-
I was playing on Hard before, now set to "Real" and it was fine.

Gotcha, so it's specific issue with the next wing not arriving on Hard.
Noted, thanks for the report.
-
I haven't played Freespace in a while, but I loved WOD episode 1 even before all the changes, so I'm definitely going to give this a shot. Thanks Spoon! (Also, this is my first time trying the Knossos installer- it seems cool as heck).
-
I made an account just to be able to make this post.
When using the Knossos Version of Wings of Dawn when just trying to start the game up, I get
Error:wod-part.tbm(line 332):
Error: Failed to load effect steam!
File parselo.cpp
Line: 303
In a box asking for me to either debug or exit, althoguh clicking either option doesn't either debug or exit resulting in the use of task manager.
If you need to see the entire log for the mod, please post some quick directions on how I can find it.
Thank you for your assistance.
-
On the home tab, can you click that arrow drop down box on the bottom of the WoD tile and go "Check File Integrity"? I'm just thinking that something didn't download correctly.
-
When checking file integrity, it claims that 2 packages are invalid
1) Package hud 2 of mod Wings of Dawn
2) Packages maps of mod Wings of Dawn
It should be noted that prior to posting about parselo.cpp, that I had already verified that these 2 packages were bad and had attempted to reinstall them through the verifying process.
After attempting to reinstall them, nothing changed and they were still invalid.
When I finish downloading them, Knossos pops up an error about how there was a critical failure (remembering this from memory, I don't have the text box available).
I have no idea what I could do about these invalid packages if knossos keeps installing them wrong.
It should be noted that I reinstalled Freespace 2 and Knossos just yesterday after having had my C drive factory reset a couple of months ago, I am also using windows defender currently if that could be quarentining the files, although from a quick inspection, it doesn't seem to be doing that.
-
If Knossos for some reason keeps giving you invalid packages, you might want to try a manual download link instead. There's not that much we can do about Knossos not cooperating unfortunately.

-
I was just wondering if this is specifically a Knossos issue or if it was an issue with Wings of Dawn. I have previously attempted to download Wings of Dawn as a standalone and haven't been able to get past the initial selection of "Ready Room". If you have any other suggestions, for how to not get this parselo.cpp error, please offer them up, otherwise I guess I will try the standalone again.
-
That parselo error is from the game being unable to read a certain effect due to a problem with one of the archives. Either an archive is corrupt, incomplete, or otherwise unreadable by the game. I've seen that error while we were just about to release and it was certainly fixed. My only advice is to keep trying with the download. :(
I don't think its a problem with WoD or Knossos, we've had many people with successful downloads and there's been no recent changes.
-
I just tried redownloading those files again and now they work. I have no idea if running knossos with admin mode or running it in 7 compatibility mode affected anything but it seems to work now. Thank you for any advice given.
-
No prob. Happy to see that fixed it. :)
-
Finally got round to playing this one, loving it so far! Much dakka, very delight. Really digging the art too, the quality is amazing. Also, that soundtrack, dayum.
I get into a soft lock during the Episode 1 Gauntlet: After wave three, the game just refuses to spawn any more ships.
Just wanted to chime in and say I've gotten it too, although changing the difficulty does work, maybe add this workaround to the op?
-
Ok, got a new issue.
This one isn't a problem with launching the game.
I am on the gaunlet mission shortly after meeting Tempest and Justice.
I start the mission and complete waves 1, 2, and 3. Then my fighter gets rearmed.
After that, wave 4 never spawns, it doesn't spawn when waiting in regular time, and it doesn't spawn when speeding time up to 64x and having over 55 minutes pass in-game.
There is also not a feature to exit early from the mission.
The only thing I can think to do is to let the wave 2 fighters kill me and hope it progresses the game, however, I really wanted to do the gauntlet.
Can you please tell me if there is a way to make wave 4 spawn in to continue the gauntlet?
-
Read the reply above yours.
-
Yup, I posted, and "then" decided to read the other posts again as opposed to in the opposite order.
I see the fix.
Thank you.
-
Patch updated in the OP that will fix this issue. Patch for Knossos will follow later today.
-
I'm currently at the scene where you meet Tempest and Justice, and I got tired of clicking the mouse so I tried pressing spacebar. This produced a rapidly repeating noise that wouldn't stop until the next loading screen.
EDIT: Seems the be a broader issue with the visual novel scenes. Lesson learned - don't press spacebar.
-
I encountered a sudden end to mission E2-M15 Welcome Back. There was no debriefing text. I was fighting the Cordi and suddenly the screen faded to black. I'll admit I wasn't keeping close watch on the escort list, so it's possible the Gate of Alemeo died.
EDIT: On a second attempt, it seems that the mission ends if you fly too close to the LSF Guardian Angel.

That's the button for glide, the game is probably freaking out trying to put the player ship into glide while the engine subsystem is broken or something. The sound goes away if you hit spacebar a second time.

Ah, yeah I see the issue. A simple mistake of checking the player's distance to the hangarbays without ensuring that that check only happens after the victory conditions have been met.

*Materializes out of the unknown*
New update for WoD? Hell yes! :D
Don't know when I'll get around to playing it, but this is awesome news!
-
Don't know when I'll get around to playing it, but this is awesome news!
you most play update
-
Since it's been so long since I played episode 1 I decided to replay it before going into ep 2, but I ran into a problem.
I think to remember there being a certain bonus goal, but can't find it and I'm wondering if it was moved or if I'm misremembering.
The mission I talk about is the mission where you have to lay bombs in an asteroid field to deal with the Contravention. And the container I'm looking for is loaded with "bathing accessories" for later use ;)
-
You're remembering the right mission. That 'find the container' bonus goal that used to be in that mission in the 2015 release of episode 1, is no longer there in the new remastered version of the bomb laying mission. (I hope you're not replaying the 2015 release, just play the new combined Episode 1&2 campaign instead!)
-
I am playing the new release.
No rubber ducks anymore... oh well.
-
If you have the patch installed, the scene will be there. No finding ducks for it required ;)
-
While that is good to head, I still miss finding rubber ducks in space for nostalgic reasons.
It made me laugh so hard when I found them back then.
-
Newest patch includes two Gauntlet missions (would have been a singular one, but apparently FRED didn't appreciate the amount of ships it required).
Equip yourself and your two wingmates with (almost) all the weapons and ships WoD has on offer and fight through either a Terran, Cyrvan or Hierarchy gauntlet.
Difficulty per wave is a bit randomized, with a higher chance to get harder waves on higher difficulties.
These gauntlets contain 'spoilers', in that they have ships and weapons in them that you've not seen in the main campaign yet.
-
The gauntlets are very enjoyable, I need to learn about all of these CSA weapons. The gauntlet got me thinking, is there anyway to "play" the benchmark? Might sound strange but being able to fight in a large battle with Terrans and Cyrvans vs. The Hierarchy would be cool! Capships, fighters and lasers everywhere!
-
Sure, just start FRED and open the benchmark in it. Then go to the events editor and delete all of the events and save the mission. Then you can just fly through the benchmark.
-
So, I FINALLY found some time to play through this. Here I offer my critique:
The gameplay was solid, about what I remember from the old WoD release. I seem to recall the Contravention asteroid trap mission being more complex than that, but I like the simplified version better if that is the case. Loved the final boss... definitely establishes the Nordera as, you know, an actual threat this time around. A wider variety in the various races capital ships is also welcome.
As for the story... well, I am not sure how to put this. All the pieces are there and the reimagined characters are great (I mourn the loss of the male LSDF fighter pilots though), but something seemed... off. I think it has to do with how characters seem to make major decisions very quickly, seemingly just to move the story along. Everyone seems EXTREMELY easygoing about everything, and I get that part of that is just WoD's general tone, but it's not always in a good way.
This was most obvious near the end of Episode 2, where Acella (sp?) suddenly decided to support Kunoichi in her "Make Dawn a goddess" plot. For that matter, how quickly Dawn went along with it. I mean, excuse me, WHAT? Deciding just like that to betray, as Acella put it, the "highest branches of the Cryvan government"? And Dawn going into this full steam ahead, without any hesitation or consideration toward the implications or consequences of such a goal, whether they succeed or fail? Granted, Acella might be lying and going along with them for the moment, but seriously Kunoichi, Acella, and Dawn, apply some brakes to that train of thought! There's diving headfirst into something and then there's diving off a cliff with a jetpack propelling you downwards.
I also feel like Dawn was made a bit too powerful, but seeing as the story is incomplete, maybe Spoon has something in mind on how to develop that plot point going forward. So on that I reserve final judgement. That info-dump seemed a bit early in the story though. You sure you want to reveal so much so fast, Spoon? Or do you perhaps have more up your sleeve?
On the positive side, this does flesh out the Wings of Dawn universe tremendously over the old one, and if we can expect this kind of additional worldbuilding going forward, that is excellent. The various different factions of the Terrans are great (even if the New Brittainians are insufferable to the extreme... I'm with Jello, I don't think I could ever like such holier-than-thou pompous bigheads), and we apparently have some inter-faction conflict among the Cyrvans.
This makes everything much more complex, intriguing, and ripe for new plots to open up.
On the whole, I feel like it's obvious a tremendous amount of work went into this and I am excited to see where it's going.

Hey........
New Britannia is a bit rough but I've been to worse.

It was done quite deliberately, yes.

Garbled Flickering Text Rendering Issues
=========================
Just want to log this here in case developers want to address the issue. I have logged a thread elsewhere about the issue which affects WoD and Between The Ashes Mods for me. Renders the Mods unplayable, unusable because you can't see text, can't therefore set pilot options or see in game ship texts and so on
On the other thread I am told that the issue is caused by new features in FSO that render True-Type fonts. Those features are clearly not supported by some graphics cards/platforms. Up to the developers whether they want to bother addressing that or not, no problem if not, but realise that it reduces your target audience for the WoD mod.
Here are screen shots of the problem from various screens in WoD
WoD Profile Selection

WoD Options Screen

WoD Targetting Options Screen
http://tinypic.com/r/2f069w4/9
WoD Misc Options Screen
http://tinypic.com/r/16a7a4o/9
Note that most other Mods work and play just fine on my laptop, inc Blue Planet, Wing Commander Darkest Dawn, Silent Threat, Transcend etc etc etc
So, no issues with my rig's power or ability to play Freespace and Mods, just issues with specific use of True Type font features in FSO.
Laptop is Lenovo with Intel HD Graphics 4600

Update
The fonts.tbl patch file mentioned in page 3 of this thread has fixed my text flickering issues. Game is now playable for me.
That said I still have a radar issue. Some problem with the pilot icons in the top right of the HUD. See here:
Game still playable though.
-
Try deleting the file called cuswingmengag-sct.tbm in the tables folder, this should revert the wingmen gauge to the retail default.
-
Just FYI: I noticed this post and it made me update the custom wingmen gauge, so now modders can specify which fonts the gauge uses (also added support for low resolutions and ability to turn the gauge off if the player disables the wingmen gauge in the HUD configuration window).
-
and ability to turn the gauge off if the player disables the wingmen gauge in the HUD configuration window).
Hi
FYI, turning the gauge off in the HUD Config Window doesn't work for me. In the config window it goes dim when you turn it off, but when you play the game, it's still there. Could just be part of my graphics issues tho. This is with the latest update which I downloaded. That update also screwed my fonts again which had been previously fixed with that fonts.tbl patch file :(
-
I just updated it today, which should fix the toggling not fully working. So download and try again, ideally it should work.

Knossos seems unaware. Do you need to tell it that there is an update available?

Oh so it won't work with Knossos. I meant you can download the updated version yourself and put it data/tables and then it should work :) The link for the most up-to-date version is in my signature.

Hello, I just got stuck on shopping mission, after getting to shop I can't leave interface at all. I am simply stuck and can't do anything aside from turning text on and off. Aside from that when I get any VN part with big red MORE stuck at the bottom I can't scroll down at all.
-
The resolution you are playing at is not supported. Try using a higher resolution, if you can.

You do good work Spoon, I'd just take the criticism in stride and keep working on the stuff you want to work on.
Now that I think of it, I don't think I finished the last mission in WoD act 2 because I didn't really want it to end knowing how long it'd likely be for the next episode. :P

I'm having the same problem. What resolution should I set it to?
-
I know personally that 1366x768, 1600x900, and 1920x1080 all work. Other 16:9 resolutions will also most likely work.
-
Not sure if this is the right thread for this, but I just finished downloading WoD through Knossos and tried to play it.
All the text was missing. Seriously, there was no text at all in the Pilots Roster, the Options menu, nada.
I'll try restarting Knossos and see if that fixes the problem, but that was a really weird glitch. More later.
-
Maybe the same thing as here: https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=95385.0

Now WoD won't even start at all. :nono: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Here's my debug log, FWIW:
https://fsnebula.org/log/5e252acacb0d330e638b7ed7
-
The debug log shows you're hung up on a warning. That's not a fatal error, you can just click no or continue or whatever it says.
For your font problem, it looks like you have a certain breed of AMD card that is known to be problematic for TTF fonts in general. Can you try the possible work-around in the below link?

Yeah, but (if I remember right) every time I click "Debug", the same warning comes up again and repeats no matter that I hit "Debug" or "Continue" or "Exit". And then I have to bring up the Task Manager to End Task in order to shut off the program entirely because there's no other way to end it.

I'll take a look at this.

The trick is to select the debug window through Alt+Tab, not by clicking on first (only click the button when the window is selected).

That's what I did. I alt-tabbed to see the window with the "Debug" or "Continue" or "Exit" option buttons. I pressed "Debug" and the same window still came up repeatedly.
As for inserting the fonts.tbl file into my /data/tables/ directory, Jellyfish said this:

So I'm gonna try this later when I'm actually about to start playing WoD, which will be after a number of other mods I'll play beforehand because I don't want to take the chance of screwing up the other mods before I've had a chance to play them. :nono:

Clicking debug will make the game try to open up the debugger in Visual Studio, so that's not something a normal player should do. Just click continue to get past the warnings. They are generally harmless. (Also once everything is working, be sure to go back to release builds!)
As for the issue that Jellyfish mentioned, I don't know if that issue is directly related or not. That sounded like a keybind/stuck joystick button issue.
Also if you're playing in Knossos, all the WoD data files are completely separated from everyone else. So you can put that table file in something like wod2.whatever/data/tables and it won't affect other mods. If you're not, WoD is recommended to be played completely standalone without being put in your main FS folder.

Concerning Knossos and the WOD data files, that's good to know. I'll experiment with this soon enough. Goddamn, but Knossos is a godsend.

Just tried to play WoD after putting the Fonts.tbl file in my wod-2.12 folder. Now I can click on the animated doors/consoles and see what they are, but the text for the pilot menu, and speech text between characters, and the text in the database are still missing.
