Hello there,

After going through the Freespace 2 campaign for the 798078th time I decided to give Inferno, the oh-so-famous mod a try. Unfortunately I'm using yee olde HotU version and it asks me to place a Freespace 2 cd in my drive. Since I have none, and can't find one, I can't play the campaign. If someone could link me an image or provide me with a functioning crack I'd much appreciate it.

And now a somewhat humorous vignette.

I'm actually the only person I know who bought Freespace 2. I was visiting in New York, saw it out of the corner of my eye and rushed in the store (2001 I believe). Unfortunately that was a long time ago and I've lost both the box and the CDs. Knowing what I know now I would have kept the box and ebayed if for 1000 dollars, I'm pretty sure there's at least one starved Freespace afficionado willing to shell out the cash to have an original box. You can also tell its something of a rarity when you read all the crazed theories about the Lucifer fleet in the wiki, which the box describes as a scouting party. Live and learn I suppose.

PS: When is Freespace 3 coming out? ... Sorry just had to do it, I figure it must be something of a tradition by now that everyone's first post in an FS forum has to be the same old question. Though the fact that Interplay began to sell some of its licenses gave me some hope. If its any consolation I have promised myself that if I ever strike it rich, I'm buying the damn license and giving it to Volition. No joke.

Get SCP, it's way better and theres a patch for INFR1.

Volition would just screw yo an o on making FPS games. way more... lucrative genre than campaign based space sims. not how i said lucrative instead of better...

PS: When is Freespace 3 coming out? ... Sorry just had to do it, I figure it must be something of a tradition by now that everyone's first post in an FS forum has to be the same old question. FSO will negate any needs for CDs.

Actually, no. Most people start their HLP career by asking for help and/or saying how ****ing awesome FSO is. Maybe a few people per year accidentally ask about FS3. Which is not going to be released. Most likely.

Interplay can't hold on to the Freespace game rights forever right? I heard someone post it was only till 2013.
Volition who is going reasonably well might just look this way and decide to get those rights and perhaps . . . just perhaps join teams with HLP.

But that's the point. It's all just "perhaps" and "possibly" and "maybe". I would have equal chances of being right if I claimed that Vasudans actually exist.

And I still don't understand why so many people are fascinated by this barely potential FS3. FS2 is fun. FS1 is fun. Majority of the usermade campaigns are fun. TCs are fun. Why do people still cry after FS3?

Awright, lemme put it this way. If a person already has a car, which is fun, why is he still waiting for his own space superiority fighter, which would also be fun but most likely won't be happening any time soon?

The explanation on Kara's FAQ isn't bad, either. Though it probably focuses more on "wouldn't", isntead of "shouldn't".

Alright I guess that joke became a little of an inside joke: I am and was fully aware of FS3 being an extremely thorny question for the FS community, I have seen numerous posts and even comics about people being tired and worn from answering. As for Volition, they've signalled on numerous occasions about being willing to make FS3, if they had the rights. As for why FS3, it's not because it'll be a fun game, but because of Vs (admitely brilliant) storytelling narrative leaves many things unexplained. Sol, shivans, ETAK, Capella, Bosch, all these things remain mysteries, as they should be. That not only makes sequels more pallatable (as it does away with ressurecting previously defeated foes: aka the Joker escapes Arkham or Diablo is back again) but makes them something of a necessity as well.

I am just thinking...
Is it possible somehow (14-year-old, forgive me if its foolishness) that someone rich would
1) make a company,
2) contact Interplay and smack a lot of money in their face
3) with the licence he woult contact  and smack another lot of money
4) would make FS3 and everyone would be happy again


PS.: Or, for instance, HL or other FS-fans would make a company and star asking for donations as Wikipedia does right now... what do you think, is it possible? (not talking about the probabilities now)

Dude, because we share our age, I will forgive you, but those companies plan what they do with their money, resources etc the year before they sit down and work on something, and typically their projects last between 6 months to 3 years. If someone where to go smack a lot of money on the table and tell V to drop everything, they would politely show you the door. Also the following reasons might clarify it more

A) Why did they stop making the FS Series in the first place...
Because it wasn't financially viable, why was this? Because FS2 simply didn't sell well, what reason is there that people will now buy a sequal for a (close to becoming) 11 year old game. 

B) Especially these days, RTS, FPS and RPGs dominate the market, and i mean DOMINATE, V would see little point in trying to sell a game whose target audience are a tight knit group of hardcore gamers, back in the old days, Volition were pretty much a bunch of hardcore gamers.

C) The two writers for FS (can't remember their names) have most definitely moved onto bigger and better things, telling them to drop everything and resume writing and terminate their contracts is not such an attractive option. Other option being- hire new writers, here I'm going to voice my opinion, if FS3 is going to come out,  I don't want it to be a glorified piece of garbage in which Shivans now have feelings and emotions and wish to seek peace with the Terrans, and the Vasudans are a bunch of porn watching, sand eating (and head eating might I add) SOB's, and the Terrans are more concerned with the fashion of their uniforms than the fate of the alliance.

On the subject of Volition and FS3:

I'm not sure how much I can say regarding this without getting into trouble.

Basically Volition/THQ no longer holds the rights to the Freespace name and Universe, so it would be fairly unlikely to see a continuation in the foreseeable future.

With that said, things can change, so maybe one day.

If there ever was a continuation though I think it most likely that Volition and THQ would both want to see the series brought to modern consoles.
