Exploring smarter warship CIWS behavior
One of the most important tasks of warship small weapons (let's call them CIWS) is point defense against incoming bombs.

One major challenge FreeSpace warships face right now is planning how to engage flights of incoming bombs. Currently they are very bad at it: they seem to engage the nearest bomb with all available weapons, kill it, hesitate a few moments, move on to the new nearest bomb, and repeat. This is extremely inefficient.

How hard would it be to enable a smarter threat targeting behavior in which warships split up their eligible CIWS weapons among incoming bombs? This would be, of course, an option, not a default.

Something similar to this option with maybe some target priorites? Diaspora uses this on the Sobek battlestar.

Awesome!

What Axem said. If set to 1for each turret, I've observed a small but noticeable decrease in performance vs small flights of bombs, but a net gain in larger firefights.
