So I have this idea that I've sort of copy-catted (with slight modifications) from these awesome guys in the doom community (http://oblacek.sh.cvut.cz/).
I would like to make use of a VPS/dedicated server to give all members of the community the ability to instantaneously configure and create temporary dedicated servers. These servers would only exist for the duration in which it contained active players + a few minutes. I would create a very friendly and easy to use web-panel with the ability to select from an array of existing mods, upload a custom mod (which would be retained only temporarily), and configure the server to the finest detail.
From what I can grasp, all of this could be accomplished with PHP/BASH scripting.
Does this seem like a worthwhile endeavour?

Heh, I remember those.... Though I've never heard the customizable server bit.
This sounds like a great idea. My home connection is just a bit horrible for those connecting. :(

Heck yeah! This sounds like an excellent idea! I've said time and time again the number one issue stunting multi's growth is hosting, and this solution seems to allow any member the ability to host. It also gets around the mod selection issue, allowing players to try TBP multi, WOD multi, or something entirely new. You have my full support!

So I've started working on this, I'll try to post bits and pieces of updates as time goes on.

A brilliant idea. This should help this multi revival effort even further. It even seems compatible with SVN-distributed packs like BP Multi.
Definitely looking forward to this.

Just an update. I've got a good portion of the front-end done. I will be using the same front-end for my freespace launcher, and my doom launcher. They will be integrated on the same page. This will not limit the freespace launcher in any way. Once I feel I've secured the system well I do intend to release the source for all of this so anyone with the resources can implement it. It will be Linux (and possibly UNIX) only.

So only linux users would be able to use this? :nervous:

Anyone will be able to create a server using the web interface. I'm just building the launcher system for Linux servers.

nope. the back-end that does all the data processing would be linux basedm the players would go on to it via web and connect with fso normally, from either mac, windaz, linux, or wherever else they can get FSO to run.
that said, i support this greatly :D

It very likely doesn't need to be said, but I too support it. It will be a huge benefit to both MULTI and BPmulti, and you have my thanks for doing something like this.

Someone used to do this for Descent 3 a while back, and it was a great service. Very awesome.

Just letting everyone know this idea isn't dead; I've Just been strapped for time lately.
