Title: Multiplayer Setup Instructions
Post by: Vidmaster on February 17, 2008, 11:57:57 am
Important!
Read everything.l

check your TBP version.
Are you using the 3.4b (Final) release? (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,51780.0.html)

Step1: create an account here: http://fs2netd.game-warden.com
Step2: open the TBP launcher and set your Internet connection to LAN (under "network")
Step3: start the standard-build TBP game (NOT INF, INF BUILDS DONT WORK IN MULTIPLAYER)
Step4: create a new multiplayer pilot or select a singleplayer one and convert it (via main menu, "pilots")
Step5: check your settings! press F2 and select "multi".
TCP has to be checked
multidata has to be unchecked
pxo has to be checked and filled with the correct info about your account at gamewarden (ignore"squad")
set object updates to low if you want to play, to high if you want to host
transfer missions: check "missions"
Step6: go to main menu and press "continue" to play TBP online
Warning messages about hacked tables are normal.

Warning: Norton Anti Virus doesn't like PXO. Disable it, and in additional blocking rules disable Email Worm Protection.

Additional missions can (and should) be downloaded here:
http://www.fubar.org/TBP/B5-M-MultiPack-1.zip

Don't bother with object updates. Add -cap_object_update 0 to custom flags in the launcher and you can leave it on high permanently.
Title: Re: TBP MULTIPLAYER TUTORIAL

New location for downloads:  Multi Mission Pack (http://fubar4.fubar.org/tbp/multi/tbp_multi.rar)
Backup link in case the above isn't working: Backup Pack (http://www.fubar.org/TBP/Multi/TBP_Multi.rar)

This contains all the missions.  Anything new or changed will be added to this file.  I will be adding a readme file with know problems.  If you find a bug or problem that isn't in the readme let us know.

Readme file has been added.  There are now 18 TvT, 8 dogfights, and 1 gauntlet mission.  Some will not work with the current 3.4b but will with the next release.  They are noted in the readme file.

just a quick one really just tried to log on etc , and it worked yeah , just a hacked tables issue ? is this normal?

ive no mods running , at first i thought it was because i cloned a pilot , but tried a new pilot same message ........

You'll get that message until the next version of TBP comes out. When it does we'll validate the tables and it will stop appearing.

When I try to connect I just get a "connection failed" message as soon as I try. Any Ideas would be welcome, thanks.
Title: Re: Multiplayer Setup Instructions
Post by: Shade on February 20, 2008, 02:22:14 pm
I'm getting the same, but I have a suspect for the cause. The included fs2open_pxo.cfg file looks obsolete. Unfortunately I don't know the correct info for TBP.

[Edit] I can connect if I copy over the file from my regular FS2 installation, just need the port number for the TBP daemon. Anyone?

[Edit 2] Found it through experimentation. Attaching the fixed file, just drop that into your TBP data directory and you should be able to connect. Can't see any games, but the website shows me in the correct category so I'm guessing that's just a firewall issue for the host.

Guess we forgot to post the config file.  I don't have it here but I will upload it as soon as I get to my system that has the correct one.
Title: Re: Multiplayer Setup Instructions
Post by: Shade on February 20, 2008, 02:42:58 pm
Figured it out. Fixed file is attached on my earlier post. I also managed to create 3 new pilots in WCS, BtRL and finally TBP while testing different ports to find the correct one :p

[Edit] Actually it doesn't look like anyone can see each other's games. Either we're all having firewall issues, or there's something else at work.

ok i got a problem..........

i followed all instructions ,i got the new version etc, just re-updated mission pack ,
my folder is clean ( all mods not in main folder)

i can log on to network, load up misions but if i try to start a mission i crash straight away,

i, just for interests sakes did the same with old version , no log in but i can load missions and then play them all be it on my own ,

any reason why i crash, checked my firewall and it says all is ok ,

just to say it plays perfectly in single player, infact its amazing , still drooling from the graphics......

thanks in advance

nope not using inferno build , just 3.6.9 version 1.03.01 , and its dated  2007-12-03, 00:55 if that helps any, the launcher is 5.5b
Title: Re: Multiplayer Setup Instructions
Post by: FUBAR-BDHR on February 20, 2008, 04:19:39 pm
Is it every missions or just certain ones?  Any error message?

Make sure you aren't doing any missions that involve the Shadows, Vorlons, Minbari, or Drakh.  There is a new table entry that you don't have that might cause it.   Try the EA mission.

havent tried them all but , ive tried about six, no luck, tried with all features off tried everything i know just bugs as soon as i touch commit , get a micro**** error message, which tells me nothing

You can try the debug build.  You'll get about a dozen warnings right at startup and a couple during missions load but you can just ignore them.

Post by: FUBAR-BDHR on February 20, 2008, 05:00:16 pm
This is what I have in my config file.  Can't guarantee that it's correct but it's what I've been using.

fs2netd.game-warden.com
12004

You can try it without PXO checked to eliminate that.
Title: Re: Multiplayer Setup Instructions
Post by: captain-custard on February 20, 2008, 06:44:34 pm
ok i found a solution , dont know if its acceptable though so please some one tell me,

i changed my fs-open 3.6.9 to the one that i run in FS , it has the same version number but not the same date, this works i can run the game when logged in , no crashes,

i also tried the btrl 3.6.9 this crashed and burned as well ,

what is the difference between this one (3.6.9 2007-11-29 and this one 3.6.9 2008-2-21)
the first one is in my fs folder and works with tbp on multi and the second is the one that tbp3.4b installs and doesnt work for me .......

do i post this on mantis?

thanks in advance

 ;) :D ;) :D ;) :D

If the BtRL build is crashing but not 3.6.9 Official then I'll want to know more about it as I barely touched the multiplayer code. Add it to Mantis and assign it to me. I'll want to know exactly which mission is crashing and when and where so I can reproduce it.
Title: Re: Multiplayer Setup Instructions
Post by: captain-custard on February 21, 2008, 06:08:35 am
ok two quick things ,

having a problem with mantis , it doesnt send me a password ............

also i should make it a bit clearer, i do not hae a problem playing btrl in single player or multi it works fine,
i just read earlier some where here that the btrl 3.6.9 and the tbp3.4b 3.6.9 were the same and i just tried to use the btrl one to launch tbp with but it reproduced the same effect..........

i launch;
try to play a multiplayer online  "alone"   and then crash if i choose a mission and accept, i get the hacked tables etc , ur playing alone etc......... then crash if i try to continue

this is the debug msg i get......................

Assert:strlen(msg_extra) <(CHATBOX_STRING_LEN-2)

File:D:\C++\Freespace\fs2_open 3.6.9\code\MissionUI\Chatbox.cpp

Line:1053

my system is this...................

xp professional  sp2
french

system version 5.1.2600

running on an acer 9410 laptop,

im running this in the launcher...........

D:\Program Files\The Babylon Project\fs2_open_3_6_9_debug.exe
 -spec -glow -env -jpgtga -mipmap -nomotiondebris -2d_poof -missile_lighting -dualscanlines -targetinfo -orbradar -rearm_timer -ballistic_gauge -ship_choice_3d -3dwarp -warp_flash -tbp -snd_preload -no_set_gamma  -ambient_factor 65

myfs2 pxo.cfg says this.....

  fs2netd.game-warden.com
  12004

sorry i posted here but couldnt get into mantis

thanks in adance hope this helps, just to say with the fs3.6.9 launcher it works but not sure if i can see other ppls games but i cant see them either with the tbp3.4b 3.6.9........

 ;) :D ;) :D ;) :D

Forgive my ignorance, but if I've added stuff to tables, will this screw up multiplayer?  (really the only thing that's been added is the "Light Burst" under weapons, and the brittlestar under additional shps, though that's Inferno Build).

Back that stuff up.  You will be getting a new weapon and ship tables.

First of all...I'm a noob, i said it before, i follow all the steps and this is what i get...

"You have indicated than you use a LAN for networking, you also apear to be dialed into your ISP. Please disconnect from your service provider , or choose" ,nothing after that... :(

This happens when i press the continue button in the main menu..

The game doesn't crash...you said to press F2 and see options, i guess you meant multyplayer opt...but there are a lot of things there,i don't have any ideea what to change there,if i need to change something

Ok...i'm blind,i saw the thing i need to do on the first post..i did them but still same thing happens

ok having a look through the thread i'm not sure if this problem is fixable or not. i've just been trying to get a server running over a private network. just mine and one other computer with me hosting. i'm able to get the server connected and i have the mission selection come up and can even use the chat but when i click 'commit' to star the misiion, it crashes and says i have hackede data tables. is there any way round this thaty does not require me to mes around too much or is this something you guys have to fix? (i noticed on the first page sopmeone mentioned something similar and you said wait for the nexty version.)
Title: Re: Multiplayer Setup Instructions
Post by: FUBAR-BDHR on March 24, 2008, 12:18:57 pm
Just ignore the hacked tables message.  It doesn't really mean anything.  The only thing it does is prevent stats from saving.  When the final tables are validated you shouldn't get it anymore.

Oh and if you are just trying to play without being on FS2netD you can hit F2 and turn off PXO under the multi tab.  Games on the local network should show up.  At leas they do for me.  If not then there is an option for IP game for direct connections where you can manually put the server address in.
Title: Re: Multiplayer Setup Instructions

sorry i perhaps should have also mentioned that when it says the tables have been hacked that the host computer immediately crashes.

Are you running the inferno build?  If so that will cause it since 3.6.9 inferno does not work in multi player.  Make sure you are using the exe that does NOT have -inf in it.

Are you using the latest version of TBP?  Just came out a couple of days ago.  Download is stickied in this forum.

Do you get an error message when it crashes?  Try running the debug build and see what happens.  Post the fs2_open.log from the data directory after running the debug build.
