Title: Andrew's Ship Factory of DOOOOOOM
Post by: AndrewofDoom on October 31, 2011, 11:10:00 pm
So, here's to my progress in becoming a better artist! For those of you who haven't been paying attention to my art thread, this time I decided to remake the ships of Sword Fleet from Thunder Force V with a dash of my own creative interpretation and license. Why? Because have you ever seen anyone do space swords before? Amongst all the bricks, fish, and bugs, I feel  this should be a breath of fresh air.

Original from Thunder Force V:

From the original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XOA8eHMl8k)

My version:

Saber-class
(http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a263/Royous/FreeSpace/SaberClass3.png)

Quarterstaff-class
(http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a263/Royous/FreeSpace/QuarterstaffClass1.png)

Gotta thank Droid803 for helping me with the shine and glow map for the Saber-class. Afterwards I finally learned how to make a shine map properly in GIMP to which I  celebrated joyously.

Without further ado, I present you with The download Link (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17350885/SwordFleet.zip). Does not include tables. Go be creative and make your own, because I'm too lazy to make them right now.

So why do they call it sword fleet?

Just kidding. Pretty good stuff. Never heard of this, I assume it's from an anime though forgive me if I assume the wrong reference.

These are certainly different, but in a very good way.

I'm thinking of eventually making more of the sword fleet ships that appeared in Thunder Force and related games.

Judgement Sword (command ship of Sword Fleet):

This one will be a pain to do, but may be worth it, because it actually has scale to it to match FS's (I had to double the size of the Saber and Quarterstaff so they were of decent size for FSO).

Sword Fleet from Thunder Force VI:

These poor guys get their asses handed to by the ORN in Thunder Force VI. I might do something like the ship in the background (the one that's got the green glow to it), but the foreground one it's been turned into AKCS Iliaster by Droid803. :nervous:

Then there's the concept art of Sword Fleet from the fan game Broken Thunder:

I may not end up doing anything like this as it's a way too literal interpretation of a sword as a ship. =p

I've also thought of making some original designs based off of bladed weapons, namely a dagger. It would a fightercraft so that the fighterbay on the Quarterstaff isn't pointless.

What do you guys think?

I think seeing a fighter for the ships would be pretty awesome.

I've been modelling space swords for a long time now, albeit not for FS.

I have vague memories of Thunder Force IV. Damn that was so long ago. 1996 I think was the last time I played it? I recall how wacky some of the weapons were. My all time favorite was "Freeway". Basically firing missiles, guns, and lasers in all directions seeming randomly from what my memory tells me. I can hardly remember a thing from that game, cept that I kept loosing  :p.

Now you're making me wish I still had the game! These models are neat  :D

The RVR series may come later. Though, I have a contact who has made the Gauntlet and the Vambrace in the past and I asked him about getting me those models. He's still digging to find those. I also have been falling very behind on my schoolwork too, so....that may be a while.

You'll forgive me if I get this optimized and converter into FSO right? Don't get too excited Vengence. :p

Finally finished modeling and UV mapping it. Now all I needs to do is texture. God this thing is going to be tiny compared to everything in FS (From my best guess the Gauntlet is around 8-10 meters long. For comparison, the SF Dragon is 12 meters long, the Rynex is 13 meters long, and the Vambrace is about 14 meters long).

I'm saddened by the lack of knowledge of Thunder Force around here. :(

Speaking of which.....Sword Fleet LIVES

It's a mostly original design I made, but I did take a few inspirations of the scene of allied ships from Thunder Force VI for its general design. It is approximately 1.5 long and has a lot of battleship-like traits, notably the platforms on a mostly flat surface to eventually house its main and very scary guns. It'll be along side the Sabers doing orbital bombard, but unlike the Sabers, it has good broadsides too. It's called a cruiser, because I am reserving the big ship type for the Judgement Sword (or as I'll call it, the Sai class), which makes the Longsword look rather small.

PS it'll have more beams than you can shake an Ascension at. The source inspiration does a 9-beam broadside and I plan to up the ante quite a bit from that.

(I've got the strikecraft part of Sword Fleet done also. They're going to be the RVR-series of fighters, two of which I have completed).

Everyone knows that swords make great inspirational platforms for starship design - they're low profile and are almost entirely sheathed in sloping paneling. The latter helps protect against low-velocity projectiles (rediculously high velocity eventually just fails to give even half a damn about your armor) or increases the apparent thichness of the armor, which may be very good in a battle with lasers or the like.

But this either looks like a sword with a gigantic gaurd or you've merged a SHMUP with Star Trek...

:nervous:

Still, it looks good so far.

EDIT!: Le Damn! Ninja'd by headdie! :D

Just cause it's pointy doesn't make it a sword. :p

The Eltreum from the anime Gunbuster. Gunbuster as in superhuge-mecha-in-space-doing-something-called-the-Inuzuma-Kick Gunbuster. Though my design of the Eltreum has taken very heavy artistic license, since going exactly after it would be suicide. How so? Well, to start off, it's stated to be 70 kilometers long. That would be even worse than the Gargant in terms of any real gameplay use. Just an even bigger background prop.

The one I'm making with probably by my guesses be around the same length as the Narayana. It'll also be in color (for those who don't know the Eltreum appears in the final episode of Gunbuster, which is 98% shown in black and white where the rest of the series was in color). I think I'll color it...a nice light blue.

Coincidence? Who knows? :nervous:
