Making a backup copy
I copied the retail VP files to a pendrive, and soon I'll burn a DVD just in case.

Suppose I don't need the retail exes, and I don't want to back up anything I can download (MediaVPs, SCP builds, campaigns, etc.). Do I need anything else?

Looking through my install directory, the VP files should be all you really need retail-wise.  Other old files like the retail launcher updater or registration material obviously don't mean all that much anymore.

Correct. If you back up all the .vp files in your base FS2 directory, it'll be all you need.
