Has anyone thought out a set of designations for the ship types not in FS2... namely for user made custom ships.

Especially as I need a new class for a ship midway between the Corvette and Destroyer class...

I've been thinking of classing it as a frigate, but GTFg / SOFg Wyvern doesn't sound great....

In real life, size upwards it goes:
 Corvette
 Destroyer
 Cruiser
 Battle Cruiser
 Battle Ship\Aircraft carrier.

Since in Freespace it goes
 Cruiser
 Corvette
 Destroyer

 try battle cruiser or battle ship

In FreeSpace we have:

J=Juggernaut
Fr=Freighter
Sg=Sentry Gun
I=Installation
A=AWACS
T=Transport
J=Juggernaut
Sc=Science Vessel (Science Cruiser)

In Warzone, Derelict, Twilight, BWO, and tBE it adds:

E=Explorer
Ff=Frigate
Ca=Carrier
Dn=Dreadnought

I've designated it as a heavy corvette for the time being, although it's called a light destroyer in the techroom, etc.

Maybe battlecruiser could be saved for something between a cruiser and corvette.
It seems like destroyers are all fighter carriers, so maybe a battleship would be anything larger than a corvette that doesnt carry its own fighter wings. A ship like that might make a lot of sense, actually. Something like an Orion with the fighter bays ripped out an extra weapons. If you have Hecates operating in conjunction then they can provide the fighter cover from somewhere safe and the Battleships can go toe to toe with the enemy caps. Specialization is usually the way to go with anything thats gonig to be operating in a fleet. Only ships that need to operate solo should have a broader range of abilities.

Not that long - I literally had it up and running in 8 hours, tbl entries and everything, befor I noticed a tiny model bug.  Give it say...2 days   .

battle cruiser sounds very big indeed, i thing heavy cruiser is best

Depends how big the ship is.  A destroyer is 2K, while a Juggernaut is 6K. I could see a battlecruiser in the 1.5-4K range

How about....

war cruiser - between 300-600m, heavily armoured & armed, but slow and unmaneuverable.  Both anti capship & AAf weaponry.

assualt cruiser - 300-500m, faster, for jumping in, firing off a salvo before jumping out as soon as possible.  Only has 1/2 powerful beams, plus a few defensive flak turrets.

escort cruiser - 200-400m combination of the previous 2, armed with primarily long range AAfs and flak, so it can cover a large area.

I think someone managed to minimse the defualt ships.tbl to around 270k, which would leave room for at least 10 ships(?).  It roughly takes 4-8k for each model, dependign on size, so probably more.  i'm not sure if FRED2 or FS2 has a limit on the possible no. of ships, though.

I'm gonna make a ship (when my model-a-day thing is over) that is smaller than a cruiser but much larger than a fighter. Very simple model, triangular mainly, very sleek, sorta like one of those reflector mirrors you use to tan under your chin and neck.

It will be more powerful than a cruiser, have mega strong armour and be twice the speed of a fenris. I'm gonna make it a GTAc, a Galactic Terran Assault Cruiser. Or maybe a GTSv, Galactic Terran Strike Vessel.

Wait a sec - you mean to tell me that the limit is a kilobyte limit and not the number of entrys? What's the max size?

That sounds like perfect descriptions of the Leviathan and Aeolus to me.
