it's not 'pointless', the flavour text in the upgrades etc. is the main hook to get you playing and keep doing so

I think if you don't actively watch for the red cookies (and then get really lucky), it will take roughly three weeks to get everything.

hint: grandmas will be better than everything up to portals when upgraded.

though apparently they also rebel or something, hasn't happened yet but that may **** you up if you've got a lot of them.

Do the red cookies have any positive effects? So far I've only had production halved.

I made a spreadsheet.  At my current numbers of all the things, grandmas are the 3rd fastest to break even with 150 of them.  Ahead of them is time machines at 58 owned and portals at 77 owned.  The cursor (at 155 owned) is only about 2x longer to break even than grandma, and everything else not mentioned is in the neighborhood of 10-15x longer at 100 owned.

Red cookies are more... random than the standard brown ones. Sometimes, you can get clots or ruin, and sometimes "elder frenzy" - a x666 bonus for 6 seconds.

Now, what should I do? I'm at a point where it will take almost 99 hours to earn the next cookie upgrade at the current rate, my next time machine will cost about 2 trillion, cursors no longer return investment so are only good for the achievement. The only plausible upgrade is

"Elder Pact" which frightens me a bit. It's even got a note saying "this is a bad idea"

There are no absolute negative contributors in this game.  It can just take a REALLY damn long time to see the return. 

It looks like the gold cookies are always positive, and the red ones have a bit higher chance of being negative than positive.  I'm pretty sure you still come out ahead by clicking all of them though.

Red cookies have a much higher chance of starting a cookie chain, which will net you over seven trillion cookies.

Getting Elder Pact will make it to where you only get red cookies, and will give you access a new achievement (more milk for the cats); nothing bad actually happens.

cookie chains go for a random number of clicks.  unless i'm completely blind.  i've had two.  one went to 666,666, and the other just to 666.

I've gotten four chains, only one of which terminated before reaching 6,666,666,666,666 cookies.

I think the longer it goes, the less chance of it failing.
