*RELEASE* Aerilon is Burning
These missions were originally based off of the mission "Learning Curve" by Karajorma.  It's so heavily modified by now though that it's pretty unique.  There are five versions of the same mission.  In four of them you can choose a Viper MK VII or an Assault Viper MK VIIE.  You can have different call signs and matching dialog for each.  Each one will also direct you to land at a different launch bay at mission end.  Otherwise they are identical.  The fifth version allows you fly either a Raptor or an Assault Raptor.  This make them challenging.

The premise of the mission is that the Sobek class Battlestar Perseus is returning from a tour of deep patrol and manuevers on the edge of the outer colonies.  They are responding to reports of a Cylon attach on the colony of Aerilon.  When they arrive they find the Battlestar Sobek and two frigates engaged against two basestars.  Your mission:  Destroy or drive off the invading Cylons and assist the Colonial ships.  This mission can be difficult and there are multiple waves and groups of various Raiders.  Average playtime 20-30 min.

You can use the different fighters and weapons to try different tactics.

All of the required files have been added to a VP archive.  It includes maps, missions, models, sounds and many modifed voice files.  No tables or any other base data is modified.

Extract the file with 7-Zip and place the VP in your root Diaspora folder.

Enjoy and good luck!

*UPDATED*  Fixed some bugs based on feedback and added a new intro sequence.  Minor changes to waypoints and renamed mission files for the possibility of a multi-mission mini-campaign.

*DROPBOX LINK UPDATED* - They just changed their policies, click Download and Continue anyway.

Also stay tuned for a much improved version of this mission in another release ;)

Damn! That was a lot of fun. It's really nice to play something new in Diaspora without having to be the one to write it first! :p

I've only played through one of the Viper missions so far, but this is actually pretty professionally done. I'm going to play it again later today and give some more detailed comments when I'm not interrupting FREDding to do it but I would strongly recommend other Diaspora fans give it a go.

Thank you very much sir, that's very high praise.  Everything I learned though is from studying the other R1 missions to determine how you folks made things work.  I love this game and I'm a huge BSG fan.  Just recently broke out the '78 version DVD's much to my wife's dissatisfaction.  I tried to explain that part of it is nostalgia, I can remember being a little tike getting yelled at by my mother for sitting too close to the TV when BSG was on. :)

I honestly can't wait to see more missions and more assets.  I go back and look at the Pegasus model in the trailers and drool.  How I'd love to launch from that beauty!  I'm really looking forward to the next release with a new Battlestar to try out :)

You'll have to settle for the Valkyrie rather than the Pegasus for the next release. :p

Re: *RELEASE* Aerilon is Burning
Yes she's a beautiful ship.  You can bet there will be a modified version of this mission where she makes an appearance :)

Re: *RELEASE* Aerilon is Burning
I was made aware that music isn't playing on these missions.  I had custom music set up on my install but I thought it was set up for these to use some stock music.  I'll get that corrected and an update uploaded.  I'll post when that's completed.

Re: *RELEASE* Aerilon is Burning
Mission files updated.  I've tested with no other mods installed on base Diaspora with the 1/29/17 64 bit build.  Music appears to be working in all mission files.

I made a minor change to make the destruction of the Sobek a little more dramatic.

You have to play the missions from the tech room at the moment.

Re: *RELEASE* Aerilon is Burning
I've played through it a bit. Trying to figure out a good way to approach it. At first, I was just tooling around in a Viper getting Raiders, but I didn't really feel like I was contributing to the mission (I also ran out of bullets near the end), so I tried a few more times with different combinations of Raptors, Strike Vipers, subsystem missiles, and nukes (which never seemed to go off, though it's hard to say if that's a glitch or not considering they're slow-moving and unguided). It definitely is fun, and it's nice to have just a big dogfight (with proper VO ambience!) to fly around in.

A few more specific comments: I hadn't played Diaspora in a while, until I got my new joystick a few weeks ago, so I'm not sure if this is a game thing I didn't encounter when I replayed the campaign or something specific to the mission; what's the deal with me being knocked into a tumble and that shrill real-airplane warning alarm going off? I almost had a heart attack the first time, and it seems to happen every playthrough (that may be my fault for flying so close to ships that are exploding). Some of the times it's happened has led me to believe it might be some sort of scripted event.

A couple of times, I've seen the third Baseship is all-but-destroyed and jumps out. I'm not sure if it actually hit 0%, but it does trigger the "The basestar is breaking apart" audio clip simultaneously with the "The basestar has jumped away" message. I get the objective failed box, but I think the mission recap at the end also mentioned that it was destroyed, so I'm not sure what's being counted and what isn't.

When I take off as a Raptor, one of my squadron mates behind me rams into me every single time before I clear the flight deck, and I'm pretty sure it's before I have control of my throttle or direction.

I've only actually lived long enough to land once, as a Raptor. I got the "Skids down" message and the mission ended as it should've, but my ship didn't actually lock into place.

Re: *RELEASE* Aerilon is Burning
The alarm is something custom I added.  Three different ones for when your hull integrity drops to 75 - 50 - 25%  So yea, its supposed to be a bad noise :)

One of the objectives is to disable the FTL on all of the basestars.  They will jump away when they drop to critical damage.  I figure it was just coincidence that you got the "breaking apart" message indicating it was destroyed and it jumping.  One thing I like about this mission is that it's somewhat fluid.  The maneuvering of the ships is totally under AI control near the end after they've followed their pathing.

So random things happen.

I've not had the issues with the Raptors in my play through of those missions I usually clear the flight pod just fine.  I mostly fly the viper missions though.  As far as contributing to the mission, if you're flying a MKVII you're goal is to protect the assault vipers and raptors so that they can take out the FTL's and of course defend the Colonial ships.  In the later waves the nuke armed raiders can really mess up the cap ships.

Re: *RELEASE* Aerilon is Burning
One thing I noticed is that several of the capships appear to have attack orders. In general it's a bad idea to use attack orders on capships rather than attempting to script the paths ships will take using waypoints. The problem is that the ships with attack orders will attempt to fly round each other and shoot. This often actually prevents them bringing their weapons to bare on each other and in one case resulted in Cylon Basestar 3 trying to fly through Basestar 2.

I had fun playing the Raptor mission just now, although I also noticed the same problem that David reported with my squadron mates flying into me. Perhaps separate them a little further from the player.

Re: *RELEASE* Aerilon is Burning
Just gave the Raptor mission a try and I gotta say I love it.
Once you're done with the Basestars, the Heavy Raiders come in, so you can run up your score a little :D Didn't even notice that the Raptor is significantly slower than a Viper - except for that moment after launch, as one of them crashed into me.
BTW, are the other pilots of the player's squad supposed to be flying Vipers by default? If you just jump into action as I did, it's a bit odd to be "forcefully overtaken" by Mark VIIs while getting off the deck at full speed. Maybe switching them to Raptors as well solves that little "problem".

Re: *RELEASE* Aerilon is Burning
Glad you enjoyed it.  The rest of your squadron is Flying MK VII's but they are "launched" from the tubes and not taking off from the deck.  I'll have to see what flights could be causing this issue.  If anyone can ID which ship is crashing into them that'll help out :)  The way it's set up the player should be the only ship taking off from the starboard flight pod.  The Red and Blue Viper VII's are already exiting their respective launch tubes at missions start.  Orange Raptors on taking off from the port flight pod and the black VIIE from a launch tube on the port pod.  There shouldn't be any other traffic near the player at launch.

Red group is the players group and Red2-4 will be in MKVII's.  The Raptor missions were kind of "Hey it would be cool to fly this in a Raptor."  And I adjusted the player's ship and events accordingly.  I didn't bother with the rest as I figured by default they'll escort the player and you could probably use the help in a Raptor.

Karajorma pointed out that the cap ships have attack orders.  I toyed around with different methods and I actually decided to give them attack orders because I thought it would be interesting to have a more dynamic mission. I could have just set up paths and had them all fly those and stay put and fire, but I thought it looks cool to see them maneuvering around each other.  I know it can sometimes have undesired results.  The most significant I've witnessed is where the Sobek gets in the way of Perseus' firing solution and takes a bunch of damage from "friendly" fire.  Most of the time it works out pretty well.

I'll have a look and see what I can tweak to make it work better.

Thanks for the feedback!

Re: *RELEASE* Aerilon is Burning
Uploaded new versions.  Fixed the Raptor/Viper collision issue by forcing Blue flight to launch from the Port flight pod in the Raptor mission.  Fixed music selection to use the proper mission music.  Added a new intro sequence to all missions.

Re: *RELEASE* Aerilon is Burning
Played the latest version. Did you by any chance do something with the Cylon raiders? After the first basestar is destroyed, they seem to be a lot more missile-happy than they were on the earlier versions I played. On a not-unrelated note, I don't seem to be getting audible missile-lock and launch warnings (I'm a little busy to see if they're coming up on the HUD, and when I know to look, it's too late).
