older game won't run on new OS
As far as I can tell, all of my hardware should be working
and seems to, until I try to leave my desktop and enter the game
Then my hard-drive begins making strange noises
and my only way out so far has been a hard shut down.
Anyone know how i should get through this?

Are you talking about FreeSpace Open?  What do you mean by strange noises?  Like, similar to when your computer first starts up, or something different?

Mine is a very old CD by Interplay & Volition
I don't think that I ever had FSO installed
Those noises are unlike any I've heard from starting my comp
They almost sound like one of the alien sound effects
Please assist me to properly re-install this game

It may be your CD drive, or even that particular disc.  Is the disc scratched a lot?  Does the noise occur when reading other discs?

Well you could always spend $3.39 for a DRM free version of Freespace 2 then install the Knossos Installer/Launcher to upgrade to Freespace 2 Open as well as many other MODS for Freespace.

I was wondering the same thing.  I reinstalled Freespace 2 on Windows 10 64-bit a couple of years ago, using my 1990s era CDs.
Maybe someday God will give you a little pink toaster of your own.
